1:29 The Emperors of Rome for the longest time presented themselves as "princeps," which essentially means, as you said, "first citizen." Romans officially pretended they still lived in a republic with elections and no hereditary monarchy - more specifically without a king or "Rex" in Latin - even during and after the reign of Augustus. The term "imperator" or "Emperor" was a purely military title meaning "commander" that happened to constantly be passed down among the various princeps, which is why it eventually became a de facto monarchical title of authority.

Nero's mother essentially engineered her son's rise to power. She clearly had designs on power from the very beginning. But that would also be her downfall, as I'm sure you know. Even so, it says a lot that she was cunning enough to convince Claudius to disinherit his own firstborn, biological son.
Also, I'm not sure if Nero and his mother ACTUALLY had an incestuous relationship, but I am aware that there is speculation. Only know about that because of that cheesy 2003 Boudica movie though, lol.

An example of a story about a King that became historical fact is of Richard III. Contemporary sources claimed that he was hunchbacked, which came down through the five centuries since he died to show how villainous he was viewed for seizing the throne from his nephew. It wasn't until his remains were discovered in an English parking lot that we found out tthe truth. He had Scoliosis.

As for rulers who mess up by being frivolous, spending all the kingdom's money, and not seeing the problem well, they were most likely true narcissists. Narcissists don't see other people as people (maybe as an extension of themselves) and don't care about other's feelings. And the fact that they are a king or an emperor get stuff like this.

The Julio-Claudian dynasty was good or bad as any in history really. Some think emperor Octavian might be the greatest Roman leader of all and there's a argument some can make to back that view. Claudius turned out to be a very good leader. Tiberius was just ok it seems, with its ups and downs and a lot has been already said about Nero and Caligula. I don't think we really can look back on all dynasties and characterize them as all good or bad

The good news is that people finally saw clearly that Biden suffers from dementia. His administration, including Vice President Harris, with the cooperation of the Democratic Party propaganda outlets, also known as the mainstream media, had been lying to the American people, saying that Biden was still just as intellectually capable. When he staggered out to the podium and mumbled through a debate, the public saw that they had been lied to by all the elected Democrats and their media lapdogs. It was an unpleasant experience, but a necessary one.

ChatHistory kind of touched on it at the end of his commentary but the Congo Free State was not a Belgian colony, it was Leopold’s personal property as essentially a neutral guarantor of free trade in the Congo Basin, which served as a buffer zone between the great powers in the area. Although Leopold appointed Belgian administrators, the Force Publique was an international force and companies from all over the world had investments in the Congo.
When word of the atrocities became known, international and domestic pressure forced Leopold to dissolve the Congo Free State. He reluctantly handed the territory over to the Belgian government, which ended the most controversial practices and converted it into a fairly normal colony known as the Belgian Congo, though continuing to guarantee previous international investments.

I believe his name was Ceausescu. The guy actually turned out pretty well first (well, by the iron curtain standards anyway). He contracted megalomania after a state visit to North Korea in the 70s. Afterwards, it was a downward spiral for the Romanians.

With regards to Timurid; it is not that it did not last. It is that one of his vessel; the Mughals ( Persian word for Mongols) went to conquer India instead.
Barbur initially wanted to conquer India to turn back; but India was wealthier and better managed and he just did not go back.
Also, Timur also did the same as he did with Isfahan; as he did with Delhi and Ankara. Utter Mongol decimation; similar to what Genghis Khan did (98% casuality).

So when it comes to him being that evil, I pretty much doubt any of it as we can never 100% confirm that he really did all of that (killed his mom, wife, lover, senator, married slave etc...)
For all we know he might have been a great and noble ruler who became too soft in time and was dethroned by power hungry generals. And all evil stories were written after his death in order to forever tarnish his image and present the ones who dethroned him as saviors.

You should read “The History of the Kingdom of Naples” by Bennetto Croce. There many facts that are missing from the story, the reason that an Angevin dynasty was in Naples goes back to the Crusade. Norman knights on the way to the Holy Land were in Salerno to take ship. The city was attacked by Moors and the Byzantine city guards did nothing. These knights couldn’t stand aside as Christians were gathered as slaves. They defeated the Moors, and decided to stay, eventually taking over both the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Afterwards by dynastic marriages the Kingdom came under the Angevins, so French influence.
Alphonso of Aragon loved Naples and lived there after grabbing control of the kingdom. He already had control of Sicily but wanted more. While fighting against Genoa he died quite young in his 50’s. Since he had only an illegitimate son, Aragon and Sicily went to his nephew Ferdinand (yes that one who married Isabelle).
Ferrante had problems from the start, his barons were rebellious as the previous Queen left them for what Ferdinand and now Ferrante wouldn’t, yes, they wanted the whole pie. Ferrante rebuilt the Neapolitan silk industry with a merchant named Coppola. By charter the free cities fell under royal control although the barons wanted to milk them. Catanzaro in Calabria was a textile center and brought good revenue to the crown so he protected it. The Jews by the origin Byzantine laws fell to royal protection as well. He needed money and since his father angered the Genovese so much their banks were not in play, but Jewish banking was.
The French king had Angevin heritage and thought Naples should be his. Ferrante’s cousin Ferdinand thought he should have inherited Naples as well. The barons leaned to the French as the previous rulers were so off handed. Coppola, remember him after being made a baron, decided to change sides as well. That dinner table in that special room was gruesome, but Ferrante had enemies from day one.
I hope that this information can shed a little extra light on this situation. He punished his money hungry barons but wasn’t really hated by his people.

I remember in the "Borgias" show they portray the King of Naples and his Black Museum. Its on of the most memorable moments in that show for me.

I think few would argue that Leopold II and Congo is among the worst and most evil period in history

I'm probably not the first to notice this but is Joffrey Baratheon based on Nero? There are a few notable similarities (Wasn't the king's real son but succeeded himself anyway, adoptive father dies mysteriously at the hands of his mother, was known for his cruelty and incompetence).

Didn't Nero let people take refuge in his gardens during the fire?

@@richardarriaga6271 he did but he also used the Great Fire as an excuse to scapegoat and prosecute early Christians and would burn many of them alive, so not exactly a great guy.
