Paul said he dreamed of his mother who was deceased and she came to him in the dream. He woke up and wrote this song.
I always thought it was lucky his mother's name wasn't Agnes or Matilda...
Paul mothers, Mary came to him in a dream and said this when he was frustrated. Great song.
He was only 14 when he lost his mother to cancer.
She was also called Mary.
She died when Paul was 14 and John’s mother also died when he was 14- something they bonded over as well as music. In my life and here there and everywhere- two of the most beautiful songs ever written by these two genius young men
He was referring to his mother, whose name was Mary, who died of breast cancer. Ironically, his first wife Linda, also died of Brest cancer. Peace ✌🏼
You can never have too many Beatles songs. I grew up with them in my life, thanfully. 😍
Same here , they illuminated our post war, lives, my parents children of the war like them too sometimes, broke down generational barriers.
Me too. I don't like being old but I'm glad I was born when I was. Beatles still move me ❤
The Beatles are the Greatest, most IMPORTANT, most UPLIFTING artists in the ENTIRE HISTORY of RECORDED SOUND! They are Earth's TREASURE! That's how I feel about the Beatles! Fab-4 / 4-Ever!
Understatement.
Mary was Paul's mother's name. She died tragically when he was a teenager and during a troubling time in his life Paul had a dream where she came to him and told him to: Let it be. Paul wrote this song based on that Dream.
Paul wrote this song with his deceased mother in mind. Her name was Mary.
At the time he wrote this Paul Mcartney was going through a lot,the impending breakup of the Beatles, his marriage and looking forward to fatherhood. He was wishing he could talk to his mom who had passed away years ago,he had dream about his mother. Mother Mary was Mary Mcartney who had died when her son was 14. People have often attributed it to Mary the Mother of God.
I thought it was about Mary , Jesus's mother for years when I was a kid lol.
@@suzanneselby5062 a lot of people did
Paul likes when a song means something different to the listener. You can bet he knew a lot of people were going to think it was Jesus' Mother Mary, and he was fine with that. I was listening to another reacter who apparently had been told "mother Mary" was Paul's mother. She heard the line "And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me" and she said "That's his mother! His mother, watching over him!" I've listened to this song since it came out in 1970. That never occurred to me.
Paul was not going through a divorce. He had not gotten married yet. He was going through some difficult things though and this dream about his mother reassured him and inspired the song.
Then what happened next??
This one actually makes me cry. I'm glad I grew up with The Beatles.
Now it is time to start listening to their early music! Hey Jude and Let It Be came at the end of their career together. They were babies (14-17ish) when it all started; they literally grew up as a band. The Beatles evolution as a group was phenomenal and has never been replicated! ✌🏼♥️🎶
@peacetoyou63 Yes indeed: Because of their career, they were not a band but a miracle.
i remember the day this was released , i was stunned and still am today . lord bless The Beatles!
MIchael. if you liked this you will LOVE Here Comes the Sun. Listen to it for you. will lift your spirits. So many great Beatles songs. And they kept growing, changing.
Mother Mary is his mother Mary McCartney who died when he was young,
Paul said that when the Beatles were in the process of breaking up. his mother came to him in a dream and told him not to worry about it. 'Let it be' Abbey Road. this album, was phenomenal it changed music, it was their final album and although a lot of critics didn't like it at the time, Beatles fans loved it and it became massively influential.
In the dream his mother Mary (Mary McCartney came to him (in the dream)) at a time of the end of the Beatles and told him "Let It Be". When Paul woke the next morning he felt as if a load had been lfted off of his shoulders.
This song is the title track from the final studio album "Let It Be" that was released on May 1970, almost a month after the group's break-up. It had a lot of good songs on it. "The Long & Winding Road", "Get Back", "Across The Universe" etc.
NOT the Beatles final studio album! The Let It be album was recorded after a fashion but left in the can unfinished. Eventually the Beatles went back into the studio and recorded their final studio album, 'Abbey Road.' They then went their separate ways. When the record company thought that there was nothing new on the horizon, they fished out the unfinished 'Let It Be/Get Back' tapes and handed them over to producer Phil Spector to see if he could get anything worthwhile out of them. So, 'Let it Be' was the final album released BUT NOT the final album recorded in the studio.
This one of my favorite Beatles' song. You definitely got the gist of Paul's beautiful message; at times you just got to chill and go with the flow as the lyrics say "Speaking words of wisdom, let it be" and "There will be an answer, let it be". The song sounds like a hymn but Paul said that the Mary he was referring to was his deceased mother who said this to him in dream but you can interpret it any way you like. Either way an amazing song and to be inspired by a dream is interesting. If you haven't yet you should check out their songs "Get Back", "Something", "Norwegian Wood", Eleanor Rigby", "Penny Lane", "Here Comes The Sun" and the "The Long & Winding Road" to name just a few from their amazing catalog.
Always remember this and you will be fine: There's The Beatles and ... then there's everyone else. They are their own genre. YW!
My favourite Beatles song is usually the one I just listened to... because they are almost all great
George Harrison's guitar on this was prime.
I’m glad he re-recorded it for the album version. It hits.
I believe this was John Lennon on the album version. And George on lead for the single
@@newo1043 ahthanks
@@newo1043 No it was George. By the time this solo was recorded John wanted nothing to do with the Beatles. He recorded the single version on January 1969 and the album version on January 1970.
@@newo1043 No, George played both. John played the 6-string bass but it was replaced later by McCartney. John wasn’t even around when they were finalizing the album.
His mother came to visit him in a dream, beautiful song !!
Or LSD trip.
His story of this song is, his mother came to him in a dream and told him everything would be alright, Just let it be. He wrote the song the next morning in just a few minutes. #1 hit. Thanks Mom.
The meaning of the song changes . Let it be in the first verse does mean let it be i.e.dont worry, it's going to be ok. But it also means let the answer come i.e. when the broken hearted people agree there will be an answer? oh please let that be
The Beatles songs changed lives.
Remember when it first came out , magical music years.
My favorite Beatles song I love Harrison's solo it's just good these guys had so much talent this is such a a powerful and emotional song
Great solo by George 💟☮️🕉️
She was his mom. I think her name is Mary. He had a dream. She was in it. She said that and more to him. By then she had been dead.
Wow I realise how old I am.. but also realise i was lucky to grow up on music, and not just production.... Drag and drop, cut and paste, Libraries and samples... ect.
I have a feeling that Paul's song, Yesterday, would move you deeply. The story of how he wrote it is well documented and extraordinary.
Let It Be Naked is the best. “And though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see. There will be an answer, let it be.” The light that still shines on you is in you and in all of us. Let it be.
This was a bittersweet song for the Beatles - "Let it Be" was also the name of their 12th studio album (which featured this song) and it came out right after the Beatles broke up and was one of their biggest hits. Towards the end of their run together, the band started having more and more disagreements about the direction of the band as well as personal arguments, and as others have said, Paul McCartney had a dream amongst a lot of the turmoil where his late mother (Mary) came to him and told him it was going to be okay and just let what has to happen, happen, and to just let it be. The Beatles were active from 1960-1970, just ten years, but their impact on music can't be overstated. Great stuff buddy, Cheers
It was a Hammond organ you heard, with classic Leslie speaker modulation.
McCartney played a Blüthner piano, Lennon played six-string electric bass (replaced by McCartney's own bass part on the final version at the behest of George Martin), George Harrison and Ringo Starr assumed their conventional roles, on guitar and drums respectively, and Billy Preston contributed on Hammond organ.
I've heard people people refer to listening to the Beatles harmonies as if they were listening to something sent from god. I can honestly see that.
There's a song called "Because" which is sung entirely in harmony; close your eyes and listen to that and you'll feel like god poured into.your brain and washed through your body.
My 14 year old thinks they are the best band ever! AMAZING TO ME!
Hey… can’t believe I’m around to see people who have never heard this… I’m new here.. what’s with the mayo 😂
Literally was going to say the same thing!
I have always assumed it was because he's white... like Mayo. And he's very white.
Several subs have asked about the mayo. Still no answer!!!😃
Yesterday is a great Beatles song. Also, Eleanor Rigby.
And Michelle. And, and, and, lol. You really can’t go wrong.
"...And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me. Shine until tomorrow, let it be."
As everyone has stated below, this song was about his mother, but Paul was baptized Catholic and sang in a Church choir, so it is not surprising that this song has the flavor of a hymn.
To quote Leonard Cohen "there is a crack in everything that is how the light gets in"
Let It Be is a song that epitomizes optimism.
🎶 There will be an answer. Let it be! 🎶
George rips one of the iconic lead guitar solos of all time.
It pulls the tears right out of you, if you got any in you.
Mary McCartney died of breast cancer when Paul was 14. In 1967-68, there was a lot of turmoil within the Beatles and their lives. Drugs, losing their manager to a drug overdose, tired from years of touring and all the booze and women. Paul admits he was really "getting pretty low, really down", and in a drunken dream, Paul had his mother tell him, "just put it all down, Just let it be". Paul and John were not fans of Christianity, George was fascinated with Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Harri Christna's. Ringo became a born again Christian in the late 70s becoming sober, or trying to be. This song is just Paul's message to the world to chill out.
2 years earlier, Lennon, whilst chatting with a friend (ex friend who was a journalist) reporting him saying in response to the popularity of the band, "It is totally crazy, we have gotten so big, The Beatles are more popular than Jesus in Great Britain. " The American press got hold of that and immediately, the Beatles were the first band to get cancelled. Record burnings and death threats (especially in the south) caused the songwriters to lash out in many songs, criticizing the church and the power elite. Of course, in poetic and word imagery, and not direct.
Paul's mum Mary told him this in a dream. So haunting and so beautiful.
Btw - Some of The Beatles songs I’d like to see you react to are: “Something”, “Eleanor Rigby”, “Helter Skelter”, “Dear Prudence”, “Got To Get You Into My Life”, “For No One”, “Blackbird”, “Here There And Everywhere”, “Girl”, “Norwegian Wood”, “In My Life”, “Taxman”, “A Day In The Life”, and from their earlier period: “Yesterday”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, “No Reply”, “A Hard Days Night”, “And I Love Her”, Ticket To Ride”, and “I’ll Be Back” among MANY other songs (Yes, the catalog of great Beatles tunes is that huge). There is a very good reason why they are the #1 performers of all time, in any recorded genre.
You will listen to this song whenever things can get overwhelming in life. It really helps.
All the best to you and yours.
Cheers.
Mother Mary is the Paul's mother that he saw in dream after she died, saying to him « Let it be ».
the second verse I think is directed to the fans who view the Beatles breaking up.
and all the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer let it be.
But though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer, let it be.
Comforting words, said brilliantly in 2 lines of a song. They, in this case Paul, were Brilliant.
Paul McCartney's mother's name was Mary, and as T Champagne said, the song came to him after he had a dream of his mother giving him the song's message. He has said many times (because Paul LOVES to share and reshare and then share again his anecdotes) that he knew people would take a religious connotation from the "Mother Mary" lyric and he was perfectly fine with that since it was in keeping with the message. The Beatles were all raised with religious backgrounds but were for the most part pretty agnostic. The notable exception was George Harrison, who became very spiritual and religious after his LSD experiences, incorporating his Christian upbringing into his Hindi and Buddhist studies and beliefs (many of his post-Beatles solo work reference God or Krshna or both).
Beatles, one of their best songs, as like a "message" songs was "In My Life"
I just drop by here occasionally to check on the mayonnaise. 😆
You see, one of the most interesting facts that catchs me out from this songs is that during the recording sessions of this album they were almost split apart, yoko was there fooling around, they get a little unmotivated, the things werent in its better way, but still they could make great songs and a great album.
You are so right. So much has happened to me in my life but God's got me. I live my life this way. Thank you for this. I remember seeing the Beatles for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. The song was She Loves You and I was maybe 3 years old. I'm 62 now and this song has gotten me this far. Also, you can never step over bounds when God is concerned.
The whole "Abbey Road" album is a MUST!!!!
Yes, Paul mother is named Mary and she came to him in a dream with this message.
I love you Beatles reactions.
I would suggest "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," a brilliant George Harrison tune.
His mother's name was Mary. She came to him in a dream. He put her words to music.
Amen, bro..."be still, & know that I am God." As the man upstairs puts it. "No worries," like is expressed by our friends in Australia. No matter how it's put, Words of Wisdom for sure.🤗
I think you got it right about this song. First reaction was right on. Second reaction would be even better.
I had my family crying laughing singing along to this song. I changed the words up to be all about my buddy Big Theee. Every time I hear this song I can’t help but laugh.
Is that so?
@@nonrepublicrat it is lol
Once, quite by accident, I went to the cinema to watch the movie "A Hard Day's Night" and when I first heard the song "If I fell" there, I fell in love with the Beatles for life. It's been almost 60 years since then and I keep coming back to their beautiful songs. From LP Let It Be I also love "The Long And Winding Road"
This song was Written by Paul - after his Mother came to him in a dream to tell him "Let it be"- during the time when he was going through turmoil w the band members- "though they may be parted"- is referring to the Beatles
One of my favorites.. it’s a beautiful song..
Try the Beatles, "Hey Bulldog.' Use the official video as it includes film of them in the recording studio and is amazing.
The song is still speaking...glad you heard it.
His mom Mary died of cancer when Paul was 14.
Paul’s mum, Mary, was a nurse. She died of cancer when he was about 14. John lost his mom in an accident when he was about the same age. They had that in common.
Mother Mary was literally Paul’s mom who died when he was only 14. She came to him in a dream at a time when Paul was especially troubled with the Beatles about to come to an end, a and in his dream she told him to just let it be.
You're right - it doesn't matter what the song is actually about. It simply matters what it means to you. I am 100% certain John, Paul, George & Ringo would agree.
If you think that it was the most beautiful song you ever heard (I love this song and I think it IS beautiful) check out Simon and Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Waters. That IS the most beautiful song I ever heard.
I love love respectable enthusiasm and joy you send out. Makes me feel joy.
One of my favorites. Love it!❤
I think when Paul dies (he’s 81 now & I wish him a long and happy life) this will be the song that is played. I heard him sing it playing on his Aunty Ginnie’s piano on New Years Eve.
I had the posters of each Beatle that came with this album on my bedroom walls!
Greatest band ever. Way ahead of their time . This is the music I grew up listening in the 60s
This song was about Paul's worries, concerning the arguments within the Beatles and the advice Paul's mother , Mary, (who'd died , when he was a child), would have given to him .
This song got me through a lot, have it tattooed on me to remind me that we don’t have control over every situation and just let it be!
Good day to hear this song. RIP David Crosby.
you're right the only way to live is acceptance
Somebody said somewhere, “Everybody’s gangsta until they hear Let It Be”. 🤗
Saw the Beatles in 1964 for my 9th birthday at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto 🇨🇦 couldn’t really hear much from all the screaming 😱 But I’m 69 now and still remember it. And funny enough my future husband was there too!
And I love her...my favorite Beatles song :)
Loved your reaction to this song. One of my favorite Beatles songs, and I love most of them.
One of the best songs written!
Waking up to "The Sound of Music" - Doh a deer, a female dear, Ray a drop of golden sun... You had to be a child of the sixties to get this reference.
I was 2 when my family arrived in Liverpool, so feel moreso a Liverpudlian! I always spoke with that scouse accent, but not as strong! Adore 'Let it be' by Paul McCartney, just fabulous. Adore all of their songs!!! xx
As if this song isn't beautiful enough, to take it up a notch on the heart wrenching meter, check out this song from the film "Across the Universe"
You're welcome, and I'm sorry lol ♥️✌
Across the Universe is the final song I'm having played at my funeral. For all I know that's where I'm going and I will join the billions of twinkly little stars. They just may be everyone who has ever lived and died. There are so many I think it's a possibility?
One of tbier best songs.
I think two of the Beatles, at least, were Catholic, but that this song was primarily about Paul's long gone mother, also named Mary. I guess it is one of those things that could be interpreted both ways. It sounds like it was intentionally written to sound like that. Anyway, the rock music of the 60s had a lot of spirituality in it. Keep an ear out for it as you go through this journey.
In the Beatles' catalogue, religions only play a role by the spiritualist George Harrison, which is particularly noticeable in the Beatles' sitar songs (actually these are more of Harrison solo songs with Indian accompaniment). John Lennon and Paul McCartney were/are rather atheistic, even if there was no specific definition of the two in this regard and Lennon in particular triggered quite a few discussions... Ringo is Ringo... He probably, as a dry alcoholic, acquired a certain relationship with some god figure without apparently living it intensively.
Mother Mary is about Paul McCartney´s (writer and singer of the song) mother, Mary, a nurse who died when Paul was a teenager.
Paul’s mother Mary died from cancer when he was 14. His eldest daughter is called Mary.
What a great song! I really enjoyed your reaction.
His mother was named Mary. She died when he was 14. She came to him in a dream when he was troubled and told him the words Let it Be. He woke up with the song fully formed.
Only 88 million other people have "reacted" to this song. Thanks to you, we now have 88,000,001.
I agree, that there are more interesting Beatles songs than "Let it be", but it's definitely one of the tracks, that moves people the most.
In this song, mother Mary is a reference to Paul's real mother whose name was Mary!
In Paul’s official biography, Paul was stressed that it looked like the Beatles would soon breakup. One night, his mother, Mary, who died when he was 14, came to him in a dream and told him it was going to be okay….just Let it Be!
Very Good 👍🏻👍🏻
very beautiful 💞👍🏻👍🏻successful work for you amen thank you my dear friend💝
I just love Your comments, You are definitely as "close to Your emotions" as Paul is, re his Lyrics. Anyway, it seem to me that You mostly have reacted to the Later of Beatles songs - I personally Love their 63-66 songs, powerful Gems they are; She Loves You, A hard Days Night, I Feel Fine, Please,Please Me, I Want to Hold Your Hand. These are just a handful of their pure Rock/Pop songs, and they were the ones I (as a now 73 Year old man), learned to play guitar to. What a Privilige God blessed me with ...
Lovely, lovely reaction. Thank you.
This is my favorite Beatles song.
Such a beautiful song 🎵
Louis Armstrong claimed that when he heard "Let It Be" for the first time, it reminded him of music played and lyrics sung in the churches he went to when he was growing up in Louisiana😊❤
Paul McCartney said it was his mother who passed away when Paul was 16 who came to him in a dream. At the time he was going through some controversial relations with the other 3 Beatles that by the way were friends and grew up together in the same town and knew each other's families and sometimes hang out in each other houses, in Liverpool, England, and went to the same school together since they were about 12 YO, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the Beatles were a musical, cultural, philosophical, experimental band & phenomena, to this day 60 years later No band, No one has even come close to them, the amount of excellent innovating music/songs/hits worldwide they wrote/composed/performed/recorded in only 7 years together was almost not human.
PS- Paul's mother's name was also Mary, he wrote the #-1 hit song 'Let It Be' based on that dream I'm pretty sure that was the last song the 4 Beatles recorded together in 1969-1970.
I suggest one of the Beatles more weird (but still wel known) ones is "I'm the walrus" it's a fun song, you might like it.
