Fun Fact: The Wicked Wench from Salazar's backstory is actually the Black Pearl. The backstory is that the East India Trading Company (more specifically Beckett) burnt and sank the Black Pearl because Jack freed 100 slaves he was supposed to sell for Beckett. In turn, Jack turned to Davy Jones to raise the ship from the depths. And due to the ship's Black burnt appearance, Jack re-christened the Wicked Wench the Black Pearl. This is also why Jones requested 100 souls for Jack's. Nice subtle reference.

ok so the thing with Davy Jones is that the Flying Dutchman must ALWAYS have a captain, because the souls of sailors who die at sea need a ferryman. Each captain is a single curse, and Will was broken free without being killed. To remedy this, Davy Jones was resurrected and returned to his post as captain.
There's a small retcon with how Jack got the compass. In the second movie, Tia Dalma/Calypso mentions offhand that he bartered for it from her. In this movie, he gets it from his former captain. Some people argue further that the greater lore was changed, what with Jack "giving up" the compass to several people throughout the series, BUT... In my opinion, it's about what the compass SYMBOLIZES. In the first movie, Jack tells Elizabeth "What the Black Pearl truly is, is freedom." The compass is a symbol of the spirit of adventure. It's specifically said that if you BETRAY the compass, it unleashes your greatest fear-- just just by giving it to someone. When Jack sold it for a drink, he was giving up on everything that compass stood for, and THAT'S why it unleashed Salazar.

    • @FireWolf583
      @FireWolf583 Год назад +6

Also in the other movies when Jack did give the compass to someone else, like Will in At World's End, bad things did happen to him. • @beng4ll967

Salazar had so much potential as an antagonist. They could have given him almost as much depth as Davy Jones, perhaps more.
Even in the context of this somewhat goofy universe, most pirates murdered , pillaged and raped everywhere they went ,while giving no mercy when the opportunity presented itself.
For all terms and purposes, Salazar was just a man who said that enough was enough and decided to actually do something about it.
Does that make him as bad as the pirates he hates?
Yes, but you can't deny the results.
Even decades after his death, pirate lords like Barbossa brick their pants at the mere mention of his name.

I always felt like the story would almost have been better if Henry remained an eleven, twelve year old boy who found Jack after stowing away on ships and being resourceful, and Jack initially decided to at the very least see this little inconvenience home safely as a favor to Elizabeth, until he produced some kind of clue that persuaded Jack that all right, so maybe the trident of Poseidon aren't all myth; so he tells Gibbs to "hide the rum" and tells the lad with the exaggerated grin that you know what, lad, we might be able to help your father after all, and that they were going to take a detour. Shenanigans ensue.
Just the idea of a Jack Sparrow transitioning from something akin to a reluctant babysitter to a funny uncle for twelve year old Henry as Will and Elizabeth's son grows on him sounds really wholesome to me, as Henry proves to be quick-witted and resourceful, and might use the fact that he is a child to get into a place no adult civilian, let alone pirate, could simply walk through the door by claiming one of the red-coats guarding it was his father, and steal something Jack needs. Sort of like when Mullroy and Murtogg starts bickering, and Jack looks from one to the other with a "oh my god, these two..." look, only this time it is Henry who looks between Jack and Gibbs as they quibble about the best way to get inside this area, and though they freak out a bit when they find Henry gone, once he shows up again, with what Jack needs for the journey, Jack can acknowledge his wit and take him on as a cabin boy for the remainder of the voyage, and stops walking on eggshells around him because he is capable, and not simply little "Will's boy" or "Elizabeth's son".
It'd also help differentiate this film from each other, and if we skip some of the unnecessary retcons...

  • @patrioticjustice9040
    @patrioticjustice9040 Год назад +17

You can definitely see where this story had a lot of flaws, especially in regards to continuity.
-Jack Sparrow had actually found the Trident of Poseidon as a teenager in the young Jack Sparrow series.
-The Wicked Wench (the ship that would become the Black Pearl) had belonged to the East India Trading Company back when Jack was a privateer in their fleet. So why this random pirate has it beforehand, I don't know.
-Tia Dalma stated in Dead Man's Chest that Jack had bartered the Compass from her, yet we see here that Jack was given the Compass by Morgan. And if the Compass released his worst fear (not sure why it was Salazar, as he never demonstrated any fear of him at all in his youth) when it was given away, then why didn't it do so every time Jack gave it away to Elizabeth, Will and Gibbs?
-We see Scrum and Marty are part of Jack's crew and that Murtogg and Mulroy are serving Barbossa, but we never learn of why Scrum left Barbossa for Jack, or how Marty, Murtogg and Mulroy survived Blackbeard's assault on the Black Pearl.
-We see that there is a huge gap of years between this movie and At World's End. We never learn how Will and the Dutchman became cursed (at the after credits scene in AWE when Will returns to Elizabeth and Henry after 10 years, he looks perfectly fine.) and we never learn of what became of Elizabeth during that time. Did she resign as Pirate King and Pirate Lord of the South China Sea?
-Much as I liked seeing Davy Jones back, it didn't make sense for him to appear in his cursed form, as the destruction of the Trident of Poseidon would have undone all the curses of the sea, including his.

    • @FireWolf583
      @FireWolf583 Год назад +2

I think his worst fear keeps changing. In At World's End he gave it to Will and was scared of being stuck with Davy Jones' crew. Shortly after giving it away he was imprisoned on Jones' ship.
The reason why Will sees Davy Jones is because the ship "must ALWAYS have a captain", symbolizing that Will gave up the ship to be with Elizabeth. Davy wants his ship back.
Will wasn't cursed so to speak, because of so many years spent underwater and with the ship he started growing barnacles. Davy became a squid because he refused to ferry souls to retaliate against Calypso.

(I've edited this comment based on some replies)
I enjoyed the usual pirate shenanigans but I get why people hate this film. It has so many inconsistencies with the plot of the prequels and I'll list a few:
    1. Jack was given the compass by Calypso and not the guy on the ship. In Part 2, she asks why the compass she gave him can't lead him to what he wants and he gave it away numerous times after that. So why didn't Salazar come since? Saying he didn't want it this time isn't feasible as he traded it for certain things with Will and Lord Beckett. Also, if that was the case, who told Salazar about the compass?
    2. At the end of part 4, Jack was told he had to do a ritual involving a crossbow, goats,a trumpet and a man waving his fingers to free the black pearl from the bottle. Why didn't Jack do the ritual since and free the Black Pearl? Also, what happened to the other ships Gibbs collected?
Jack should have been an admiral by now.
    3. Will wasn't under a curse. Davy Jones was because he stopped doing his duty. There's nowhere we're told that Will neglected his duty. Also the broken curses by the trident should have turned Davy Jones normal in the end credits but he's dead so he shouldn't even be there.
    4. The pirates suddenly seem very daft. The same pirates skilled in navigation, have a court, poetic speech and code of conduct etc can no longer understand simple marine navigation terms? So a horologist has to explain?
    5. Did Jack really run out of luck or it was an excuse to push the plot of Salazar? Cos if it's bad luck, he's been unlucky since part 1. Remember when one of the other pirates in jail in Part 1 told him he was unlucky when the Black Pearl's cannon blew open their cell and left his until Will came to save him? In part 2, his crew confronts him after he comes out of the coffin in the beginning because they don't seem to have a direction and Jack confused them with English.
Think about it, he's only had the Black Pearl in 1 out of 5 movies (Dead Man's Chest) and even that wasn't much as he was chased about by Davy Jones and the British Navy.
Overall, this movie seems more like a spin-off and not a sequel. I guess it's why people don't like it. At least Part 4 followed the first 3 and I enjoyed it. Seems like the directors just wanted their own story.

If it's to be the end, then a fine enough end for a series that had long since run its' course. Loved the flashbacks with young Jack and Salazar. I find it odd how people complain about Jack being a 'silly bumbler' in this one when it's literally part of the story that he's down on his luck trying to get his mojo/groove back. ALL of Jack's plans and gambits can appear to be either planned or made up as he goes along, impossible to tell. He's certainly back to his At World's End shape by the time he regains the Pearl.
If we're to have one final journey I wrote some ideas for a finale wherein Hernando Cortes (you know; the greedy butcher who started the Aztec tradition of cursing their treasure) appearing to return from the dead and slay Captain Teague, prompting Jack into a journey of discovery and possibly revenge. A fitting end for what some are already calling 'the Spanish trilogy'.

So much here doesn't make sense.
    * For instance the compass, Jack bought it of Tia Dalma and he handed it away multiple times before.
    * Another is Jacks origin which was that he was part of EIC before the pearl became the pearl.
    * Being the captain of the Dutchmen is not a curse but a pact if anything.
    * And even if that counted too, Will is only alive because of it. His heart is no longer in his body.
    * Will shouldn't been "fishyfied" either if he held up his end of the pact. So that either taking a piss on his character or the writers forgot(which is more likely given the rest of the movie)
    Etc.
The only good thing in the movie is Barbosa.

All correct. It was stated even by Beckett that Jack was employed in EITC years ago around the time Jack was 18-25. During this time he captained the ship The Wicked Wench which was owned by EITC not pirates. So this already conflicts with this movie's flashback (regardless of how good that scene is). Jack got the compass from Tia Dalma/Calypso either sometime after or before his employment at EITC. Jack was branded a pirate by Beckett because he let go slaves during a special mission where he had to deliver slaves to one of Beckett's customers which would have given Beckett higher recognition and even a promotion.
This is the mark Jack left on Beckett: embarrassment and betrayal. For this The Wicked Wench and her crew and captain were ordered to be burned and sunk. It was here that Jack desperately asked Davy Jones to bring back his ship which he did, the ship was already blackened because of the fire hence why it was named The Black Pearl. DJ gave Jack 13 years to captain before he was due payment (and we know from here where this goes). The compass was betrayed numerous time during the trilogy so this part makes no sense.
The worst of it is how they treated Will and The Flying Dutchman. This is not a curse but a needed supernatural function at sea. Calypso formed this pact to permit souls lost at sea to properly cross over. DJ may have failed his promise but I find it hard to believe that Will would. He knew the task and even willing to promise in keeping his end of the bargain as long as he is allowed to see his family once every ten years (the continuation of this was made by DJ as a spell so that the function can continue if for whatever reason he would die). Being lifted from this would not work since one's heart is no longer a part of them. The only way is death and a new captain selected.
I know you brought these points already but I love talking about this in detail just in case.

Okay so I’m gonna explain how Davy Jones is back because it took me a while to figure it out. Wills father is free of Davy Jones curse of the dead man’s chest but the Dutchman is not a cursed ship, it is a supernatural ship so the “it must have a captain rule” still applies. Davy Jones probably went to the locker after his death but the locker is it’s own curse to it’s gone too. Davy Jones is the previous and original captain of the Dutchman because it was given to him by calypso. The reason Jones is still weird and fishy is because that was his punishment from calypso. I’m not sure why will isn’t fishy though.

There are just so many inconsistencies with the movie, things being introduced that went nowhere or established but then quickly discarded. It made no sense that the compass connected to Salazar when Calypso gave jack the compass to begin with or why Barbosa never used the power of Blackbeards sword to defend the ship but he used it to free the pearl. The set designs are great as usual but I didn't enjoy the acting and performance. The romance between Will and Elizabeth felt more genuine, mostly because it took place over 3 films. This one felt rushed. I don't think they should have revisited the Will and Elizabeth story, just let it be and start a new story. Barbosa was the one thing that was consistently good throughout. Now that he's gone, that's it for me personally. As usual if you want to experience a great pirate story, watch the Black Sails series.

Be it stealing the aztec gold or not fullfilling the ferryman duties on the Dutchman. Davy Jones made a deal with Calypso, willingly. His appearance remains, because he still doesn't fullfill his task of ferrying the souls. The ending also implies, that he is now once again captain of the Flying Dutchman, previously being part of the crew under William Turner, as he died shortly before Will became captain.

the way jack gets his compass in this movie is a contradiction to the 2nd movie. there tiadorma/calipso asks him if he still has the compass she gave him (it's the scene where he gets the jar of dirt)

Does ppl really think this is better than the last? I think this is easily the worst one haha. But to each his own!
Salazar as a villain I got no problem with tho. But I feel the film as a whole is def the weakest.

This might sound silly, but the curse of davy jones was actually like this. Before davy jones became captain of the dutchman, someone else was. I think it follows history a bit, the previous captain was captain van der decken. Who died along with his crew and had to sail the sees for eternity. His heart got stabbed by davy jones, who then became the next captain of the flying dutchman until will stabbed the heart, and he became the new captain. When that curse broke, it must've reverted the captain of the flying dutchman back to Davy Jones (I'm not sure)

It's hard to watch this, knowing the Hell that Johnny Depp was going through while filming this. Easter egg hunt: Try to see when Disney had to CGI his injured finger.
