David, these videos have been KILLER. Thank you for sharing all these tips and tricks. They're so helpful for this guitarist becoming bassist. Your jokes and editing are the icing on the cake. I always feel inspired to go practice haha
this is simply AWESOME. Not many of the professionals give such honest and detailed deep dives in their tone and settings, feels like most "hide" some sweet sauce or the cherry on top. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Hyped for part 2 and hopefully even more content, its truly inspiring and entertaining watching you!
It's great to have so much insigth from this brother. However, I'm from a time were we would extract the tone from the Bass, by hand. We would make the instrument "groans" to deliver what we wanted it to deliver. No electronic stuff, just the musician and the instrument plugged in. 🙂
I got the dad tone lol I guess seeing this video have taught me a lesson that there's a more bass meat tone that I could add up to the dish! Thank you :)
Thank you Mr. funkkkkk!!! I have been looking and looking all over youtube/ instagram to get information like these. I really appreciate your dedication to Jesus!!
Thanks for the video, man! I’ve got an unusual bass rig because I made a board that works for both electric and bass. I have a Benson Automatone Preamp MkII that I was using to try to copy some of your tones from this video. I’m surprised at how much I had to scoop the low mids to get close to your tone. I bounce back and forth between a more neutral tone and a more scooped tone but I’m excited to play around with these settings and see how it feels.
Been enjoying bass so much as I produce my own music, but I don't actually have my own. Just keep borrowing one when I need it. haha Gotta get one and start getting the pedals for the sauce. So good!
My modern micro synth does the same thing! Like every other time I kick it on it will have way less of the square wave and top end. And I can’t figure out why it does that. 😢
Dude... Im writing a 2 side ep. 3 doom songs aboit spiritual warfare... 3 (slow and heavy) worship songs. I'm definitely going to be checking out some of that micro synth for the first side.
@@thedavidfunk_ it’s on Tanners board! Chris Greely recommended it to me as well. Try it out! Add lots of hair, but not really a fuzz like the Kilt gets to.
It’s on Tanner’s board! Got the recommendation from Chris Greely too. It’s got lots of hair, but I don’t think it gets as fuzz as the Kilt. Great stuff Dave!
I’ve been playing with the regular D’addario XLs for most of this year, and I like them! How often do you change your strings, and how much longer do you feel like the NYXLs last than the regular ones?
I change my strings every couple of sets. 2 … max 4 I’d say. With the normal ones i remember doing closer to like 1-3 I’d say. So depending on how much you practice / how long your sets are it can be super worth it!
Hey David, What you said about your micro synth. My micro synth kind of does the same thing with losing aggression. It’s honestly not horrible. But I was wondering if you figured out the cause of that?
Great Questions - the V1 is very hard to find now unfortunately. You might be able to get one on Reverb but they're pretty overpriced. V1 has the two sides with the independent boost and an accessible low cut switch. the V2 has the switch (to my knowledge) but you have to open it up
Hola genio! (Yo los acomodaria asi) 4) No explica el proceso de post producción, pero suena a que tiene algún compresor y un ecualizaror en la mezcla.
i know - it’s so sad! honestly the main thing that’s iconic too it for me is the fuzz - so i’d just try some different fuzz options until you find something you like! then could always have a separate boost or drive
still great! a friend has one on his bass board. pretty sure you have to get it modded to make sure there’s not a low cut? but otherwise i’m sure it slaps.
I used to have this issue when I ran my microsynth with the trigger and start frequency up. A couple years back I saw a video of David Hislop demoing a microsynth with the trigger and start frequency all the way down and using only the stop frequency to control the filter. I started doing that and haven’t had any issues since. This is the same way David is running his in this video.
How to get the bethel bass tone?!?!? Have a million dollars. Constant new strings? Dude thinks we are made of money! This video was tone buzzword bingo, don’t get me wrong, it’s a super cool video but maybe next time try to build a board on a budget?
fair enough! all stuff i’ve accumulated over the years; that’s why i tried to give my recommendation on what order I’d buy things in! But could totally keep in mind budget options / versions of things in the future
All of the worship bassists after all these years 😳

classic one 😂😂
Guitar player here!! But enjoying your KILLER tone. 🔥
Came for the tone. Stayed for the one-liners. 😂 This is the Funk content we all need. Keep them coming!
😂😂 thanks bro!
I’m a EG1 and keys player. It’s nice to see the bass guys getting some quality content and love.
dude's becoming my favorite youtuber. I don't even play bass. Now just waiting for the tone breakdown of your voice 🔥😂

Recently got a Tone Hammer because I LOVED the sound of it in your vids - what a game changer! Can't wait for more!!

Hey David, can you make a Video about you Acoustic Guitar playing?
What Kind of Tuning do you have on your Guitar, which one are you playing?
great idea!
mat ogden is lives down the street from me lol. can confirm this is all correct lol, have borrowed his bass board many times!
Loved this video!
Learnt a lot🔥 Thank you!
Nice! Thank you! More items to my GAS list 😜🎸
Sounds awesome!
YESSS!!!!!! been waiting for this one
Can you do your keys setup and tone next? Would be an amazing resource!
Awesome tones David! Love the vintage Micro synth 🔥🔥
Amazing video, David!
"Wait, Reve Newpert direct injection?! I'm lost." 😂😂
“Nupert Reve Designed Injection” 🤣
i got LOST
Always wanted a video specifically abt this ❤
🎉🎉 Thank you David!!! Amazing. I needed this video 😅
Glad it was helpful!
Alright the J bass is cool and all but hear me out, squire bronco short scale with a hot rail pickup. Sounds weird but I’ll tell you it sounds sick!
I’m in camp modded broncos too. Greetings fellow budget tone monster. 🙌

Great video. Ironically i have almost the same set up. I just run an old Big Muff pedal for fuzz.
bet that sounds so sick honestly
Eres el mejor David te quiero ❤❤❤❤❤
Finally bass can sound the same!
Hey David! Genuine question 🙋♂️ if you majority of the time use the neck PUP of the jazz why not try out P basses?
Hey @Tone_Factor, what about a Tonex capture of these pedalboard drives and pres? 👀
TH+Neve capture would be sick 🔥
@DavidHislop @KenyonReed2
tone factor x david funk i wouldn’t hate it …
I would love to hear more about when you use the microsynth. Not a lot of bands use one, but I know the Bethel camp loves it
Love it, now to redo my bass board 😭
😂
Красавчик! Отличный тон!
I was really here for part 2 😮
soon i promise!! haha
part 2? will he lose the pick and play with finger?
Precision Bass.
Enough said. You want midrange? P-Bass is where it's at.
fair point! P Bass got a tooonn of that yummy midrange
Lot’s of folk running the Mother Buffer lately
*I’ve been asked to stop calling it that
More vids like this please! 😊
Is it possible to get neural captures of your gain stages? Would be perfect for my QC!
Finally someone made this video! Thank you! The Kilt is moded or it it just how you bought it?
just how I got it!
Fresh strings are a biggie. I play a 5 string J though so it’s pretty much $30 per month budgeted in 😂
The best, God bless you 🙏🏿❤
You are my hero!
My modern micro synth does the same thing! Like every other time I kick it on it will have way less of the square wave and top end. And I can’t figure out why it does that. 😢

Nice video! Hey David, with u wanna to, can u make a vídeo about your ac guitar tone? Did u guys use any IR or comp?
that's a great idea. What do you mean by "IR or comp?"
The Tone Hammer’s mid frequency sweeps from 180 Hz to 1 kHz
hahah yep. that's why I put that screen shot up .. didn't want to lead everyone astray!
@@thedavidfunk_There’s supposedly a new version of the Tone Hammer DI in the works 👀
You should check out the daddario medium bottom light tops! I love them 🤙

Sooo same pedalboard EXCEPT for the Kilt. I have a Schafer Replica. Thoughts on that?

Do you dive into creating presets on devices like hx stomp, helix, quad cortex and etc? 😅

Hey David, Nice video. Have you tried chicken picks? Game changer for me.
i haven’t!
@@thedavidfunk_ Ah! then you have to! I've got a feeling that you'll like it by how you described you like your picks in this video.
What's the difference between V1 Kilt and the V2 that you placed link in the description? Same question for the MicroSynth? Thanks buddy

And Microsynth in the description is just the most modern release of the pedal. I talk some about my experiences with both in the video!
Repping the Bristol House T 🤌🏻
When does part 2 come out🔥
Monday!
Do you ever adjust the bridge pickup knob or tone knob on the bass itself depending on dynamics of a song?
yeah sometimes i’ll drop my tone knob and go to fingers if i want to be suuuper chill and discreet.

Is there a difference using the Tone Hammer as a DI vs using the Output going into a separate DI?
there is - it’s not super huge; there is a volume difference though at least with the RNDI: it attenuates the signal about 15-20db
Thank you
You're welcome!

Craque !!
How much do you spend on strings and picks a year? 👀💰🤑
hahah great question … don’t tell my wife 😂
are you experiencing any phase issues with running two different pickups?
No - I also don't use the bridge a ton, so primarily I'm only using the Neck pickup.
Since the JHS Kilt V1 is almost impossible to find (at least for a reasonable price) are there any alternatives one could use to get the same tone?
i know - it’s so sad! honestly the main thing that’s iconic too it for me is the fuzz - so i’d just try some different fuzz options until you find something you like! then could always have a separate boost or drive

I run an old big muff pedal for fuzz. I personally think it sounds great.
You can check out the Way Huge pork & pickle. Also has an overdrive and fuzz
