  • After losing a child at birth in November 2018, 1st Lt. Elizabeth Elliott turned to music to grieve and begin the healing process. In January 2019, she contacted composer Brian Balmages to write a piece of music to help her family, and others, find strength. Lt. Elliott describes her experience with the work, "I know that this piece will help so many families now and into the future. "Love and Light" is for my daughter Madison, but it is also for all the babies in heaven that we lost... Nothing can take away the pain of losing a child, but... time reveals, there is "Love and Light" on the other side."
The dedication on the score reads, "For Madison Elliott, all angel babies, and their parents." The piece is organized in three sections, each answering a question posed by Balmages: What does unconditional love sound like? What does it sound like when unconditional love is shattered? What does it sound like when a child first sees the face of God?
Lt. Elliott conducted The United States Army Band in the world premiere of "Love and Light" by Brian Balmages in concert on February 22 at Schlesinger Hall. Lt. Elliott would like to acknowledge and thank the consortium members that aided in the commission and Col. Andrew Esch for facilitating the premiere.

I broke into tears twice while practicing along with this video for an upcoming performance with the Maryland Winds - truly powerful, heart-wrenching, consoling music. Well done Brian, Lt. Elliot, and all the musicians.

I played this at intercollegiate band in Alabama yesterday and WOW! This piece was AMAZING. So powerful. Brian Balmages really outdid himself on this piece. I have probably listened to this 7-8 times today alone.

Music has been an anchor for me as a singer since my own sweet Peter was stillborn in June 2019. The grief is helped through music, the love of family, and the deep hope of seeing him again some day, knowing he's with us always. Thank you, Lt. Elliott, for moving through your own grief to bring forth such beauty, such hope, such triumph and for Brian Balmages for capturing these tremendously difficult emotions. From one mother who has lost her baby to another, I pray for continued love and peace and hope and yes, someday, true joy again.

It's been years since a RUclips video brought me to tears. To see the members of Pershing's Own (many of whom I recognize), playing their hearts out for a fellow member was real. Bravo TUSAB.

What an amazing work! Thank you Lt. Elliot and Brian Balmages. The Heisey Wind Ensemble, based in Newark, Ohio under the direction of Dr. Russell Mikkelson, will be performing this on our October ('23) concert and again in February ('24) at the Ohio Music Education Association convention.

This pieces is so powerful. Thank you Lt. Elliot and Brian Balmages for this incredible work of art to help with healing for those of us with babies in heaven. I am honored to be conducting Love & Light this coming summer and I hope we can do it justice. I plan to tell the band ahead of time that I *will* cry, and I'm OK with that! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What an amazing piece - especially loved the oboe solos and the quotes of different hymns like "All Creatures of Our God and King" and "Salvation is Created." Having Lt. Elliot conduct the ensemble also made it so much more emotional that I was in tears near the end. Bravo!

What a beautiful piece. Brian never ceases to amaze, but he truly outdid himself this time. This marvelous experience evokes such enveloping emotions that I only see produced by music.
The symbolism is far beyond what I assumed music could do, and seeing how it unanimously affects others so strongly was almost enlightening.
I can't give this piece enough praise, but I must simply express how beautifully effective it is at portraying such a powerful struggle.

    Alleluia, Alleluia, Oh Praise Him!
The Treasure Valley Concert Band, from Boise, ID, has been performing this.
I sit almost in the middle of the band, and get to hear incredible sounds from every section. And then, the raw emotion hits me and I fight through tears to keep my composure and play my part.
I've never lost a child, and so I can only imagine, and just barely at that, the intense emotional and physical struggle one goes through. This music so incredibly captures that struggle that many parents have undergone during such moments.
It's been such a blessing to get to perform this piece of music.
