    Our asparagus get a top up of worm castings and aged horse manure in the fall. We cut the canes down just before Christmas. Unfortunately, roots from our neighbour's new hedge are infiltrating the bed. Not much we can do about it except move the entire bed. We're selling our home, so that's something we will leave for the new owners to sort out.

      Did you not consider taking them with you as it takes years to grow from seeds?

    • @NanasWorms
      @NanasWorms 3 дня назад +1

      @ Good point. We only have 10 crowns, so it shouldn't be too hard. What time of year would be best to lift them?

      @NanasWorms hi Sandra, Asparagus can be lifted any time during the dormant stage as long as the ground isn't frozen, but the longer you leave it the later you will get a harvest the following season. There is nothing wrong with potting some up and then they can be planted when it suits you in their new spot which of course you will well prepare weed free and lots of lovely worm castings. Remember the roots are very long so get what you can before trimming them and potting up.

      @ibrstellar1080 well worth only harvesting very little as it matures and when it is matured only harvest for 6 weeks and yes good management will give us an abundance.

    I, hope you and Mrs K had a great Christmas. I have only just cut my asparagus back today. My hubster then went to the local stables and got me 6 bags of well rotted stable manure for my home kitchen garden, so I mulched my asparagus beds with 3 bags and the rest will go in the fruit cage. I have a further 8 bags at the allotment to top up the beds as I harvest the winter crops. Wishing you both a wonderful New year with everything you hope for. Happy growing 🙂

      @RobinGardens as long as it is weed free they will do well, getting established crowns do speed up the process and you can't beat cutting them and eating raw or steaming for a few minutes.

    This coming spring with be Year 3 from having grown my Asparagus plants from seeds ... so I'm looking to enjoy at least 1 meal off of them for the two of us.
    I'll be taking off the ferns tomorrow and adding a mulch on top of home made compost doused with a litre or two of my "worm pee" liquid so it can soak in to the soil over the rest of the winter

    My mother-in-law gave me asparagus seeds off her plant. I've just potted them on - lots grew, but 10 survived and doing well - I thought I had some dead flower heads/dried little berries on the old stems - turned out to be tiny snails! Little beasts! I'll plant them in the veg bed next year - hopefully not with the snails.
