    Thank you for your most informative video on Crape Myrtle! You really know your stuff and your actual samples of the buds, seed pods, and the diseases the tree can get were so helpful to me. We have one in the front of our house here in north central Florida and it would be great if you did a video on how to prune them in February. We see a lot of "crape murder" prune jobs and wonder if they truly harm the trees.

      I think early on, yes, it is beneficial. As they mature, you shouldn't have to, because they thrive in sandy, less nutrient dense soil. But, fertilization never hurts.

    We have one quite nice Red Crepe Myrtle that is appears it has never been murdered. Our neighbors have several Crepe Myrtle which someone came and committed a mass murder. It has sent out several suckered onto our property. Is there a way to safely transplant those suckers. I have looking at many sites to learn as much as I can as a non professional trimmer. I have learned a lot and also learned that there is a lot more to learn to keep them under control grothwise. I saw one tree that had been let run wide and developed way too many stocks and looked unsitely so someone cut them all off at the ground and it looks like a pile of leaves. Can that be saved to make a single stock tree?

    Great informative video. I planted a 15 gallon Crepe Myrtle a month ago and it's going from good to worse. It's about dead now, even though I've watered it 2-3 times a week. Then every other day when it got 90-100 degrees, the leave are dry and brittle like it never gets watered. I'm very sad about it. It's a dark purple variety. My soil is clay & well draining. Mixed with some acidic and some organic compost. Maybe it was planted incorrectly. BooHooo

    HI. Thank you for your in-depth video. We bought a home in Pine Grove Calif. I learned a lot we moved here in Aug 2023 and the Crape Myrtles look horrible some had no blooms, and some had a few. Some are large and some are smaller trees that look terrible. I know the people selling stopped caring about the yard due to the high cost of water in Amador County. So, I realize they have the seed pods on them so a pruning will help but what about feeding? The are all in full sun is it a water issue.?

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
      @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi, there! Thanks for the questions. If they are established, I doubt it is a water issue. Plus, crape myrtles are quite drought tolerant. Try applying a 10-10-10 fertilizer. This should help.

After winter, replanted in the front yard and it was doing great until a few weeks ago and now there are spots on the leaf and the leaves are turning red and dropping. I'm guessing from research, Cercospora???? Put a copper fungicide on it. How often? Anything else I should be doing? Is it basically done for the season at this point?

      Hi, Evelyn. Sorry to hear one isn't doing too well. Have you noticed any of the following:
      - ants
      - black sooty mold
      - aphids (generally found on the underside of leaves)
      Spots on the leaves could mean fungus problems. Go ahead and treat with a fungicide. If you have any of the other items I listed above, you will need to treat with an insecticide as well. Wait several days between both treatments.

    Thank you for this video. My Crape Myrtles have full sun and flowers once, but I wasn't trimming the bud and I have no flowers on them now. I didn't cut them back because I wanted them to get taller. I live in Dallas, TX and I see these trees 20 feet high with no trimming on the top done at all every year, and yet they bloom all summer? So I couldn't understand why my trees wouldn't keep growing flowers. My trees are about 12 feet high and I thought they would be high enough to just keep flowering. Is there a certain height that they need to be in order to keep blooming without trimming. Thank you so much for all the information.(:o)

      Yes, you can and should remove the dead branches from your Catawba Crepe Myrtle. Pruning dead or damaged branches helps the tree focus its energy on healthy growth and can improve its overall appearance. Make sure to use clean, sharp pruning tools to make clean cuts. Prune the branches back to healthy wood or to the main trunk if necessary. This will promote better air circulation and light penetration, which can enhance the health and beauty of your tree.

    A new tree was planted in the fall last year. The harsh winter in the Northwest killed the main tree. It came back in the spring with shoots which we let grow and bloomed wonderfully. Now we are in the fall and trying to figure out how to save a the “bush” for next year. Can these shoots be combined together to form a single trunk? Thank you. Enjoy your videos.

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
      @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960  24 дня назад

      No, unfortunately the shoots cannot be combined to form a single trunk. Crape Myrtles are grown and pruned at a young age to have a single trunk. Once you have a single trunk tree, you will always need to prune the shoots, as it wants to grow as a multi-stem.

    I have two beautiful 6 year old dwarf Crepe Myrtles , what is a very good fertilizer that you recommend .
    Thank you.
    Bob, Palm Harbor, Fla.

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
      @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960  3 месяца назад

      For your beautiful dwarf Crepe Myrtles, you'd want a fertilizer that promotes blooming and healthy growth. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer is often recommended for Crepe Myrtles, typically something with a N-P-K ratio (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) that supports both foliage and flower development. A formulation such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 is commonly used. However, Crepe Myrtles also benefit from a higher phosphorus content to encourage more blooms.
      Here are some tips:
      Balanced Slow-Release Fertilizer: Choose a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) to provide consistent nutrients over time without the risk of overfeeding.
      Bloom Booster: During the growing season, you might want to use a fertilizer with a higher middle number, which represents phosphorus, to promote more blooms. Look for something like a 10-20-10 formulation.
      Organic Options: If you prefer organic gardening, compost and bone meal are excellent choices. Compost provides a wide range of nutrients, while bone meal adds phosphorus, which is essential for blooms.
      Application Timing: The best time to fertilize Crepe Myrtles is in early spring as they exit dormancy, and then again in early summer to encourage blooms. Avoid fertilizing late in the season, as this can stimulate new growth that may not harden off before winter.
      Follow Instructions: Always follow the application rates and instructions on the fertilizer packaging to avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers and can also harm the plant.
      Remember, Crepe Myrtles are relatively low-maintenance and may not require much fertilizer if they are already in healthy, fertile soil. It's also good practice to have your soil tested to understand its specific nutrient needs before applying any fertilizer.

      Hi, Maria. When was the last time you pruned it? Pruning is very important for crape myrtles and their blooms. Also, fertilizer may help produce blooms.

      Yes! Make a fresh cut and then make a vertical "wound" long enough to stick in soil. Dip in rooting hormone and stick in soil.

    Jane please help, what's wrong with my crepe myrtle? There is black powder mold....white tiny dots and the leaves look like sticky gunk all over them. I hosed it off hoping it would help. But what do you suggest?

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
      @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960  3 месяца назад

      The issue you're describing with your Crepe Myrtle trees sounds like a combination of sooty mold (black mold) and an infestation of pests, likely Crepe Myrtle aphids, which are common culprits for the white dots. The aphids excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that can lead to the growth of sooty mold on the leaves.
      To address both the pest problem and the resulting sooty mold, you'll typically need to use an insecticide for the aphids and a fungicide may be used if the sooty mold is extensive, although sooty mold usually resolves on its own once the insects are controlled. Here’s a two-pronged approach:
      Insecticide for Aphids (White Dots): Neem oil is an effective, organic option that works against a wide range of pests, including aphids, without harming beneficial insects. It can also help with the sooty mold. For a more targeted chemical approach, insecticidal soaps or a systemic insecticide specifically labeled for use on aphids and safe for Crepe Myrtles can be used. A product containing imidacloprid as a systemic insecticide can protect the tree for a longer period as it's absorbed by the tree and targets pests that feed on it.
      Treatment for Sooty Mold: Sooty mold itself can often be left untreated once the pests are managed, as it will gradually wear off with rain and as the plant grows. However, for severe infestations, gently washing the leaves with a water hose or applying a fungicidal soap can help remove the mold. Ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent future outbreaks.
      Important Considerations:
      Timing and Application: Follow the application instructions carefully for any treatment. It's usually best to apply these treatments in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid harming beneficial insects and to reduce the risk of leaf burn.
      Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings in your garden, as they are natural predators of aphids.
      Regular Inspection: Early detection of aphids can prevent the issue from escalating to the point where sooty mold becomes a problem. Regularly inspect your Crepe Myrtles for signs of pests.
      Remember, the specific products and their availability can vary, so it's a good idea to visit a local garden center or nursery with knowledgeable staff who can recommend the best products available in your area. Always check the label of any pesticide or fungicide to ensure it's safe for use on Crepe Myrtles and follow the recommended safety precautions and application instructions.

    Hi, my crape myrtles were doing just fine but for a few days im seeing the flowers dying. Its too hot in houston probably that is the reason, how often should i water them to overcome it. Can i do something else? Pls let me know thank you

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
      @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960  24 дня назад

      It is probably due to drought and heat. While they are very drought and heat tolerant, they may still show signs of stress. You can water thoroughly every other day and that should help.

    • @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960

      How tall is the bush currently? Typically, we start making crape myrtles tree form when the are hung. Also, some varieties of crape myrtles are naturally bush form, so it may never provide a strong enough single truck or even a multi-stem to allow you to do this.
