Thank you for your most informative video on Crape Myrtle! You really know your stuff and your actual samples of the buds, seed pods, and the diseases the tree can get were so helpful to me. We have one in the front of our house here in north central Florida and it would be great if you did a video on how to prune them in February. We see a lot of "crape murder" prune jobs and wonder if they truly harm the trees.
Hi, there! We have a video on this:

Very helpful! I'm new to crape myrtles. I knew about cutting the suckers, but wasn't sure how to handle the top growth and my trees have gotten very top heavy with the seeds.
So happy to help!
GREAT video.
What are your thoughts on fertilizing crape myrtles?
I think early on, yes, it is beneficial. As they mature, you shouldn't have to, because they thrive in sandy, less nutrient dense soil. But, fertilization never hurts.
Thanks for sharing this interesting information, I love crepe mytle plants and trees, I have 3of them in my yard and want to get more of them, but are pricey at nurseries, so I'll just shop around
Thanks for watching!
Your very knowledgeable. Thank you
So nice of you!
Thank you for the good information

I have been trying to find this kind of information about crepe Myrtle and while there were some pieces available, this video gives a complete overview of maintaining crepe Myrtle trees. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am a newbie gardener and this helped me a lot! Do you recommend putting nitro fertilizers or insecticide to a 1 year old crepe Myrtle small plant? Thanks
😗 good info!! Thanks!!
Thanks! Happy to help!
Glad I found ur channel I don’t know what’s eating my tree what can I use to tree it
Thanks for watching!
Thanks much ma'am!
You're welcome 😊
🌳🌺VERY INFORMATIVE‼️🌺🌳
Glad you think so! Do you have any recommendations for topics for my future videos? What would you like to see?
Great info thank you.. Past winter we had a quick freeze damaging my crape myrtles leaving only suckers growing. Should I allow the suckers to grow until Feb-March or thin them out now?
Beautiful flowers 👍never give up🤝
Thanks for visiting!
@@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 you are welcome to my channel💐💐💐💐💐
Hi, love the video! If you keep the suckers cut off will the top of the plant eventually bloom? Every year mine seems to only bloom suckers. I'm trying to get some height on it but it's like I have to start over every year. We did have a severe cold snap this past Spring. Nashville TN area.
We have one quite nice Red Crepe Myrtle that is appears it has never been murdered. Our neighbors have several Crepe Myrtle which someone came and committed a mass murder. It has sent out several suckered onto our property. Is there a way to safely transplant those suckers. I have looking at many sites to learn as much as I can as a non professional trimmer. I have learned a lot and also learned that there is a lot more to learn to keep them under control grothwise. I saw one tree that had been let run wide and developed way too many stocks and looked unsitely so someone cut them all off at the ground and it looks like a pile of leaves. Can that be saved to make a single stock tree?
Hello from another transplant from "up nort der" about 50 miles south of Duluth. My Wife is from Two Harbors. Really liked you video and learned a lot of things nobody else touched on.
Thank you for the good information you provided for us I have several crape myrtles trees not booming almost naked no 🌿 I think those beetles ate them and the ones they have are very small 😢
How much light do they receive? They are full sun trees so they need a lot of bright, direct light. Also, do you see any other insects on the tree?
Best Crepe Myrtle RUclips.., Thank you very much. Any specific recommendation on insecticides for each of the problems?
Thanks! Neem oil works great, as does any insecticidal soap.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Great informative video. I planted a 15 gallon Crepe Myrtle a month ago and it's going from good to worse. It's about dead now, even though I've watered it 2-3 times a week. Then every other day when it got 90-100 degrees, the leave are dry and brittle like it never gets watered. I'm very sad about it. It's a dark purple variety. My soil is clay & well draining. Mixed with some acidic and some organic compost. Maybe it was planted incorrectly. BooHooo
Very direct and straight to the point exactly what I like! my question. my crêpe myrtles are not blooming and some of the branches are not showing any leaves, what can I do?
can give provide the growing conditions for the tree? How much light, water, etc?
HI. Thank you for your in-depth video. We bought a home in Pine Grove Calif. I learned a lot we moved here in Aug 2023 and the Crape Myrtles look horrible some had no blooms, and some had a few. Some are large and some are smaller trees that look terrible. I know the people selling stopped caring about the yard due to the high cost of water in Amador County. So, I realize they have the seed pods on them so a pruning will help but what about feeding? The are all in full sun is it a water issue.?
Hi, there! Thanks for the questions. If they are established, I doubt it is a water issue. Plus, crape myrtles are quite drought tolerant. Try applying a 10-10-10 fertilizer. This should help.
Great information, thank you! I'm planning on planting a crepe myrtle in my yard. How long does a new planting take to start blooming?
Depends on the size that you purchase. Usually, 3 gallon Crape Myrtles are too young to bloom; however, a 15 gallon is 3-4 years old and will bloom!
Well, I have a question. I live in Riverview , Florida, Zone 9b. I have one that is teriffic and have never had a problem. Wasn't doing well in the back yard. Looked like fungus. After winter, replanted in the front yard and it was doing great until a few weeks ago and now there are spots on the leaf and the leaves are turning red and dropping. I'm guessing from research, Cercospora???? Put a copper fungicide on it. How often? Anything else I should be doing? Is it basically done for the season at this point?
Hi Jane, thank you for such a great demonstration of caring for crêpe myrtle tree question, the cuttings, are we able to replant them to grow more trees?
Yes you can! You would treat them as propagation cuttings. And I would recommend dipping them in rooting hormone before placing into a small 2" container or cell pack.
@@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 Ok sounds great 👍 thank you so much!
How do you make the tree grow I'm from NC love your videos
Just apply some fertilizer and make sure they are watered if they were just planted.
Hi thank you so much for this video. I have a young crepe myrtle. It's leafy but a lot the ends of the branches died. Can I trim the twig ends where there are no leaves or should wait until the winter? I am in the Virginia area.
Yes, trim the dead twigs now. I wouldn't wait until winter for that, as it wouldn;t be a hard prune.
Thank you so much for the informative video! Is there a brand of insecticide you recommend for both spray and in the soil?
Anything by Espoma or Bonide is good.
I was wondering if your information about cutting the pods to extend the flowers pertains to zone 7 also?
Absolutely!!
Thank you for your demonstration. It is August here in Missouri (zone5) and I'm propagating new bushes. They do very well here too, leaves have sprouted. I have them in a part shaded spot and keep them watered. 2 questions, when do I move them to the permanent spot? When do I put them in the ground? Or do it at the same time.
Hey there! What kind of plants are they? That will be the deciding factor of when to move them to the ground. You will also want to make sure they have a solid root system established.
They are crape myrtle and come from a healthy plant.
hello, this was very interesting. however, can you provide a fertilizer type to feed the trees and when to apply to mature trees.
I have 7 trees however they are not blooming as well as they should. thanks.... !
I live in PA I have 2 dynamite crap myrtles I fertilized in spring when it started to leaf out. Should I fertilize again they are about to flower?
Is there a systemic insecticide
that is organic and won’t hurt the bees? I used the Bayer 3 in one for my roses and the crepe myrtle looked good also.
But now I’m thinking I shouldn’t use it
HI, Shane -
I planted two new Black Diamond crape myrtles last week. ONe of them is doing fine, but the other has some spots on the leaves and some leaves are curling up. It doesn't sound like any of the problems you mentioned in the video. Please let me know what you think if might be and how to treat it. Evelyn
Hi, Evelyn. Sorry to hear one isn't doing too well. Have you noticed any of the following:
- ants
- black sooty mold
- aphids (generally found on the underside of leaves)
Spots on the leaves could mean fungus problems. Go ahead and treat with a fungicide. If you have any of the other items I listed above, you will need to treat with an insecticide as well. Wait several days between both treatments.
Thank you for this video. My Crape Myrtles have full sun and flowers once, but I wasn't trimming the bud and I have no flowers on them now. I didn't cut them back because I wanted them to get taller. I live in Dallas, TX and I see these trees 20 feet high with no trimming on the top done at all every year, and yet they bloom all summer? So I couldn't understand why my trees wouldn't keep growing flowers. My trees are about 12 feet high and I thought they would be high enough to just keep flowering. Is there a certain height that they need to be in order to keep blooming without trimming. Thank you so much for all the information.(:o)
How much water does it receive? Could be a watering issue.
I much water do you water new crape myrtle trees. I have my first one and I am watering deeply and letting dry out 2-3 days as I read on internet. Its July now. I put in alfafa when I first planted for a slow release fertilizer to feed it. Im in zone 9. any other tips
I need to know the name of the set aside and the topical spray for the crepe Myrtle trees. I have black mold and white dots.
Awesome information!! I live in Maryland and I have 4 Crepe Myrtles on my property. I removed a large tree with it's roots damaging my driveway & planted a Catawba Crepe Myrtle near that spot last month (April) it's doing well but I noticed in the middle of it some dead branches with no growth on it. Can I remove these dead branches? The rest of the tree looks absolutely beautiful.
Yes, you can and should remove the dead branches from your Catawba Crepe Myrtle. Pruning dead or damaged branches helps the tree focus its energy on healthy growth and can improve its overall appearance. Make sure to use clean, sharp pruning tools to make clean cuts. Prune the branches back to healthy wood or to the main trunk if necessary. This will promote better air circulation and light penetration, which can enhance the health and beauty of your tree.
@@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
Thank you for replying!! I'm going to do that today. Except for those couple dead branches my Catawba Crepe Myrtle looks so good. I think it will do very well in that spot.
Very helpful. Thanks. But I’d also like to know how much fertilizer to use for a tree in the ground.
Hi there. It depends on the size of the plant and the type of fertilizer. The fertilizer bag should say how much to use based on the size of the tree.
Great video ... I Do have a Question!?
I planted my Black Diamond best Red Crape Myrtle 3 weeks ago it was looking great but here in Central FL we have received Lots of Rain
Now it has lost lots of leaves and flowers some were just crispy and falling off, the soil is not soaked with a finger check but it is moist
My other Crape is doing beautifully I have pictures I dont know what I may have done wrong or if all this rain has killed it
It's possible it received too much rain. How is it now?
Thanks for the great video. I have very tall crape Myrtles. Probably almost 30 feet tall. I barely get any flowers on the top. Since I can’t reach those seed pods, how can I encourage more flowers?
Fertilizing may help produce more flowers, but removing the seed pods is the best way unfortunately
Hello, our crape myrtles, at a recently purchased home, do not bloom-- what can we do about that, try to trim back? They are approx 20 ft tall, thank you!
A new tree was planted in the fall last year. The harsh winter in the Northwest killed the main tree. It came back in the spring with shoots which we let grow and bloomed wonderfully. Now we are in the fall and trying to figure out how to save a the “bush” for next year. Can these shoots be combined together to form a single trunk? Thank you. Enjoy your videos.
No, unfortunately the shoots cannot be combined to form a single trunk. Crape Myrtles are grown and pruned at a young age to have a single trunk. Once you have a single trunk tree, you will always need to prune the shoots, as it wants to grow as a multi-stem.
Hi thank you for crepe myrtle info. Question: my crepe myrtle does not bloom until late august in central texas, 😢 sometimes doesnt bloom at all. One year we had heavy rains. Still bloomed late but gave most abundance of flowers.
What can i do to get it to bloom earlier in summer. Its in sun most of day.
Hi there. It is likely due to years of drought stress. You can start watering thoroughly every other day in May and see if that helps produce flowers sooner.
How often should i water my newly planted .myrtle tree in a hot texas weather? I have 4 10 footer and 1 30 foot myrtles
Hi, there! We have a video on watering in new plants! 👇🏾
ruclips.net/video/Z2N0K-Ue1h4/видео.html
I live in zone 9 Florida. I have a white crape myrtle that is getting leggy looking at the top half. How do I prune it back into shape? Video please!?
I will do a video in February showing the proper way to shape and prune Crape Myrtles.
Can malithion be used as the insecticide?
Nice video!! Are you able to explain how to know if my crepe Myrtle is dead?
You can either scratch the bark and look for a green layer or wait for spring in your area to come and see if it leafs out.
Will give it a try! Thanks for that information 😃
Great info from fellow RUclipsrs!
I have two beautiful 6 year old dwarf Crepe Myrtles , what is a very good fertilizer that you recommend .
Thank you.
Bob, Palm Harbor, Fla.
For your beautiful dwarf Crepe Myrtles, you'd want a fertilizer that promotes blooming and healthy growth. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer is often recommended for Crepe Myrtles, typically something with a N-P-K ratio (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) that supports both foliage and flower development. A formulation such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 is commonly used. However, Crepe Myrtles also benefit from a higher phosphorus content to encourage more blooms.
Here are some tips:
Balanced Slow-Release Fertilizer: Choose a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) to provide consistent nutrients over time without the risk of overfeeding.
Bloom Booster: During the growing season, you might want to use a fertilizer with a higher middle number, which represents phosphorus, to promote more blooms. Look for something like a 10-20-10 formulation.
Organic Options: If you prefer organic gardening, compost and bone meal are excellent choices. Compost provides a wide range of nutrients, while bone meal adds phosphorus, which is essential for blooms.
Application Timing: The best time to fertilize Crepe Myrtles is in early spring as they exit dormancy, and then again in early summer to encourage blooms. Avoid fertilizing late in the season, as this can stimulate new growth that may not harden off before winter.
Follow Instructions: Always follow the application rates and instructions on the fertilizer packaging to avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers and can also harm the plant.
Remember, Crepe Myrtles are relatively low-maintenance and may not require much fertilizer if they are already in healthy, fertile soil. It's also good practice to have your soil tested to understand its specific nutrient needs before applying any fertilizer.
Should you trim the myrtle in the fall to keep it from growing to tall
You can do a small trim, but I wouldn't do a hard prune until February.
Very informative. What is the best fertilizer to get flowers. Ours don't flower..
Thank you!
Couple of questions: Have they been pruned? Are there still seed pods on the ends? How much sunlight do they receive?
@@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 full sun . 5 years old light pruning in the spring
I would to have short crape trees how to keep them from growing tall
My tree was a very happy blooming tree years ago. Now it’s been a few years since in bloomed like before. I don’t know why it’s so sad and not t blooming. Us there anything I can do to help it get healthy again?
Hi, Maria. When was the last time you pruned it? Pruning is very important for crape myrtles and their blooms. Also, fertilizer may help produce blooms.
Can the suckers that are removed be used to start new trees?
Yes! Make a fresh cut and then make a vertical "wound" long enough to stick in soil. Dip in rooting hormone and stick in soil.
My tree has something that looks like moss on the trunk and is not growing since the landscaper severely pruned it during the winter. What can I do to help the tree grow . The nursery recommended to spray liquid copper fungicide. Is that ok to do in this situation?
Yes, copper fungicide should work fine. Just don't get it on the leaves.
My crepes aren't blooming as well this summer; I was advised to use bonemeal. If you think it helps the blooming, how much to apply and how often to an established crepe tree? Love you video!
Thanks for the kind words. How big is the tree?
Jane please help, what's wrong with my crepe myrtle? There is black powder mold....white tiny dots and the leaves look like sticky gunk all over them. I hosed it off hoping it would help. But what do you suggest?
The issue you're describing with your Crepe Myrtle trees sounds like a combination of sooty mold (black mold) and an infestation of pests, likely Crepe Myrtle aphids, which are common culprits for the white dots. The aphids excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that can lead to the growth of sooty mold on the leaves.
To address both the pest problem and the resulting sooty mold, you'll typically need to use an insecticide for the aphids and a fungicide may be used if the sooty mold is extensive, although sooty mold usually resolves on its own once the insects are controlled. Here’s a two-pronged approach:
Insecticide for Aphids (White Dots): Neem oil is an effective, organic option that works against a wide range of pests, including aphids, without harming beneficial insects. It can also help with the sooty mold. For a more targeted chemical approach, insecticidal soaps or a systemic insecticide specifically labeled for use on aphids and safe for Crepe Myrtles can be used. A product containing imidacloprid as a systemic insecticide can protect the tree for a longer period as it's absorbed by the tree and targets pests that feed on it.
Treatment for Sooty Mold: Sooty mold itself can often be left untreated once the pests are managed, as it will gradually wear off with rain and as the plant grows. However, for severe infestations, gently washing the leaves with a water hose or applying a fungicidal soap can help remove the mold. Ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent future outbreaks.
Important Considerations:
Timing and Application: Follow the application instructions carefully for any treatment. It's usually best to apply these treatments in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid harming beneficial insects and to reduce the risk of leaf burn.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings in your garden, as they are natural predators of aphids.
Regular Inspection: Early detection of aphids can prevent the issue from escalating to the point where sooty mold becomes a problem. Regularly inspect your Crepe Myrtles for signs of pests.
Remember, the specific products and their availability can vary, so it's a good idea to visit a local garden center or nursery with knowledgeable staff who can recommend the best products available in your area. Always check the label of any pesticide or fungicide to ensure it's safe for use on Crepe Myrtles and follow the recommended safety precautions and application instructions.
Hi, my crape myrtles were doing just fine but for a few days im seeing the flowers dying. Its too hot in houston probably that is the reason, how often should i water them to overcome it. Can i do something else? Pls let me know thank you
It is probably due to drought and heat. While they are very drought and heat tolerant, they may still show signs of stress. You can water thoroughly every other day and that should help.
What kind is that purple crepe myrtle? What is it called?
Hi, there! This one is a Zuni!
how can I prune my bushy crepe myrtle into forming into a tree?
How tall is the bush currently? Typically, we start making crape myrtles tree form when the are hung. Also, some varieties of crape myrtles are naturally bush form, so it may never provide a strong enough single truck or even a multi-stem to allow you to do this.
I have a very large crepe and I forunately it does not bloom - what can I do to get blooms
what are the growing conditions for this tree currently? If it doesn't get enough sunlight, it may not produce blooms.
Speaking of fire ants I heard they are attracted to these trees
They're not attracted to these trees, but attracted to the sugary excretion from the aphids that can be on Crape Myrtles.
My crepe myrtles look healthy but they never bloom, what am I doing wrong?
One of my crape myrtles leaves have turned very shiny, do you inow why?
It sounds like the excretions from the aphids. Is it sticky? Look very closely on the leaves and on the undersides of the leaves. You will likely see small light green bugs. Time to treat!
@@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 yep that's what it was! What do you recommend treating it with?
I live NM ...my question is I cannot make mine grow...for 3 yrs they are still a foot tall...
How's the soil? May need to amend the soil and add nutrients to it. Compost works great!
Mine haven’t bloomed in 2 years
Have you tried pruning off the seed pods?
How long from “bud” stage to “flower “🌺 stage?
anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks depending on water, temps, and light.
What can you do if the crape myrtle has never blossomed?
prune off seed pods, fertilize.
Thank you
Cutting the seed heads off won't hurt its speed on verticle growth?? I think mine maybe grew barely an inch this whole year it's been in the ground a year now
If conditions are adequate for the tree, then no. If anything, it helps the tree grow and thrive more.
@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 not really sure what's going on with mine it looks terrible but the ones they planted on the side of highway are growing great. Wish i could show pictures. My local nursery said it's from the heat and drought but i water once week
