Sonny has a very unusual slide technique, wearing the slide on his little finger, and fretting notes with his other fingers behind the slide, pushing them far enough away from the slide to ring cleanly with the slide still in place and acting on other strings. Derek plays slide more conventionally, but is absolutely excellent. Two of the very best!
@davelehnen3300, Derek style is very much in the mold of Duane Allman and Sonny using the slide on his little finger and fretting behind the slide very much like Johnny Winter, who always used his slide on his little finger too.
Pretty clever trick, fretting behind the slide. Depending on the string height, if you're tuned to an open major chord, you can use a finger behind the slide to get a minor chord when needed.
Except he plays without a pic which is very unusual for a slide player 😉

Sonny Landreth.....one of the best ever!! This opens the door for the Mighty Mighty Neville Brothers......some the best shows I have seen were the Nevilles the best being at small venues, fortunately many many times. There's a lot of Cajun musicians in Louisiana who never leave the state and are some of the best musicians in the country.

Have seen Sonny many times over the years. Mostly with John Hiatt. For my money Sonny is the Best Slide player ever.

Sonny lives in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. He had the good fortune of playing in Clifton Chenier's band at a young age. A studio version of this song appears on his "South of I-10" album, which is one of my favorite albums from the 90s. Mark Knopfler plays on that song on the album.

I first started listening to Sonny Landreth back in the 90's during his collaborations with Mark Knopfler.
Sonny Landreth is the best blues/slide guitar player you have never heard of. He has been around for years. He is like Towns Van Zandt. You have heard his music but don't know who he is.
A real contrast in slide styles, but very cool together.
Derek and Sonny it was almost like a war between the guitarist ......you are the best Harri love you, you give the best reactions....can you imagine what would happen if Derek let his hair down??......

Mind Droppings ..... Sonny Landreth opening for the Tedeschi-Trucks Band would make for a Great Double Bill !! Personally I've already seen these 2 onstage performing together in 2009 at the Allman Brothers Legendary 40th Anniversary run at The Beacon Theater . The ABB had different guests for every night of that run & I was there for the night Sonny was 1 of the guests . I went to 4 of the shows that year & I think on the night Sonny guested , Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top was one of the other performing guests . Unless with my aging memory that was on another night .... 🙃

If you lose them closely the song is really all about the drums because they don't play guitar in Congo Square
