I don't think theres many women that haven't experienced sexual harassment. Its just been so normalised that women have been taught to play it down or placate a man that they deal with it on their own. I think that the female voice has been so muted for so long sometimes men are surprised when a women finally doesn't placate and tells what their really feeling. I remember there was so much rage when the catcalling video came out. What women don't like that? But I'm complementing them? No your not. You're saying her space is not her own. And her body is not her own.

From what I can tell you're right. As a guy, I was completely unaware of many subtle acts of harassment that happen all the time to women until some of my female friends started talking about it. It still grosses me out that as a women you can't go to any crowded event without getting squeezed in the butt by some random guy like wtf. And that's just one of the many stuff that is happening all of the time.

I just got some street level sexual harassment when I was walking my dogs...
it was some ubereats of postmates guy and he just licked at me from his partially open car window..
like..that's obviously harassment...but it isn't always that obvious.

I’ve been following the channel for a year and I’d like to say that he seems like a very good interviewer: he has calm/calming energy and tone, he lets the guest talk, shows that he is listening, actively engages with the guest and turns the interview into a collaborative conversation rather than “question 1, answer 1, question 2, answer 2”, doesn’t let the conversation drift either i.e does just the right amount of steering. Good job. Obviously having an hour instead of 4 minutes makes some of this easier: no rush, no anxiety about getting enough questions in, a chance to ask deeper questions that require a longer response and so on, but it is also hard work. AND DAMN DOES HE DESERVE TO HAVE THESE HOUR LONG INTERVIEWS cause he’s good at his job.

@@baxmusskywalker5524 I didn't take it as political but I know why that person did -- because 9 out of 10 times it would be. Late-night hosts are more openly political than ever before. And almost every time this comes up about them talking too much, it's lumped in with ridicule against the Left -- and the longing for the "good ol' days" of Carson and the like. What those people fail to consider is that everything is more political today, so those hots are just a product of the times (as are the very people ridiculing them). I'm not excusing the hosts (I don't even watch them) -- I'm simply stating reality (which is another thing that's long gone).
Unfortunately, we have created a culture where people make such assumptions simply because a comment brings to mind what they are used to. I've made the same mistake a time or two. Not excusing it -- just saying how it is.

Serious question, what kind of situation classifies as too uncomfortable to be considered harassment? The lines seem really soft between okay and not okay and I’d like to understand what she (and other people) mean when they say “I’ve been in uncomfortable situations” when referring to harassment. Is it that uncomfortable means there is now a lack of safety and security with the person they’re with? Harassment is not okay and making people feel unsafe is not okay, but making sure people don’t feel uncomfortable, is that too far? Or is that a different kind of discomfort she’s referring to?

An example of a real life conversation:
      Man: your dress is nice.
      Me: thanks!
Man: it looks really good on you. Have you been working out? You look like you lost weight.
Me: yeah. I've been going to the gym more often.
Man: what gym do you go to?
      Me: oh planet fitness.
      Man: the one located at....
      Me: uh. Um. yeah.
Man: good. You know, I've always thought that you are such a beautiful girl.
      Me: silent
The conversation ends but the compliments continue almost every day and never in front of anyone else. Only when we are alone.
Now imagine that this man is my married boss and I'm 19. What was a harmless compliment on a dress turns into every day harassment just bc I said thank you the first time and my boss thought he could continue noticing little things and giving me compliments about my looks. Never once did he compliment my work or capabilities to handle the job.
And this example doesn't convey his tone or the way he looked at me. I'm not saying don't compliment anyone but when someone is in a position of power, it can take on a whole different meaning.

I think she means verbal sexual harassment or suggestion or "joke", an unwanted touch or a hug that goes too long, a creepy gaze, or the obligatory "can you be more sexy?" that I imagine actresses often get. It's an euphemism when women say "discomfort", which actually means "putting up with low-level sexual harassment that we're not sure if it's worth fighting for but we kinda want to get out of here ASAP". So yeah, it's a specific kind of discomfort.

    • @noora8179
      @noora8179 6 лет назад +15

well the ones she says she hasnt experienced are things like rape, but what she has experienced is maybe flirtations by bosses or co workers who are supposed to be professional. now that isnt harassment because no lines have been crossed and there are no consequences, but if youre a young girl and your boss goes and compliments your ass (for example), its sure as hell uncomfortable.

The problem isn’t capitalism, or patriarchy. The problem in Hollywood is an industry that condones a culture of greed and fornication. What started out as a an entrepreneurial business venture to entertain the masses turned into something selfish and warped, yet we idolize these people and their culture because we see them so much on a screen.
But maybe they’re just a fragment of American culture as a whole. Today, Scientists can’t replicate 70% each other’s “successful” experiments. The motive of fearing God was traded for a motive of making more money through grants, so of course it looks this way today.
Quantity over quality. Don’t practice what you preach.
The answer is to not look for ways to subvert older traditions, but instead look at why they worked for thousands of years. A small part of why men and women used to be segregated was the fear of men harassing women. We take what our ancestors knew on relationships and apply them, without segregation, as long as we’re willing to decrease our values in the material.
Science and new technology won’t save our moral failing, but critical thinking and a reaffirmation of tried and true values will strengthen us in the long the run.
