I have been thinking about this topic for a while now, and the problem dates back to high schools in the selection of subjects. The lack of guidance in selection of career paths and the lack of skill by the teachers to assess students strengths and weaknesses and appropriately guide them in their respective career paths. The university also needs to do statistics on students absorption to the job market and advise high schools accordingly on careers with low absorption rates.
You are not alone, in 2011 I graduated with a diploma in biomedical laboratory science which is not recognized by any medical board l have been working in different hospital as a receptionist,to make the matter worse we studied in the same class, did the same examination with medical laboratory science student who are now registered by board.Tarmacing is real for young adults
Just being hopeful and entrepreneurial coz we must eat. However, it pains for time and resources wasted advancing higher education. My friends who indulged in business are doing great now. I am embarking on the same a decade later.
I feel the frustration, I also graduated with a bachelors degree in science technology-Physics but still on job hunting for 6yrs now. Only managed to work for some govt ministry here in Uganda as volunteer. But hey it’s not easy over here, only those with connections have jobs but the struggle continues

Don't sit and wait for employment you have a hidden talent and you could do very well and make money, plunge into the business world.Try rearing chicken for eggs and it will shock you. There are many things you can do and become an employer, don't waste your years waiting to go abroad or a job.
Thanks for this video. At times one thinks they are all alone in this menace of job hunting, ending up falling into depression. It's very concerning how many of us chopiis end up helpless after graduation. You'll actually be surprised how many such extremely smart people out here have been denied that opportunity. Sad. Personally i blame the universities for offering very useless courses.

@@RUclipsCurious Yes it's just that people have expectations. I came to realize you need to keep on putting efforts any day any time and nothing is guaranteed.
There needs to be councillors for high school to advise students on programs not worth taking especially degrees that end with studies, art, or business , instead health care, law and engineering have high success rates
True. There's need for a recalibration of young minds to shift away from over-reliance on jobs and get into skill-based courses that can be easily monetized
I've noticed many comments talking about going abroad,it's not that easy, just look inside yourself 4 any hidden talent,it may be music, writing, acting, modelling, interrogating pple/interviews,cooking etc, this could be your cycle breaker,we could be in fields that we were never even meant to be in the first place.
The education system is pretty darn horrible. Highly educated people without jobs is a ticking time bomb. One day, it will explode. Hope your story will teach someone going to campus to choose carefully their majors.
The problem is Kenya 🇰🇪. Coz if she was in Europe 🇪🇺, she'd be long employed. The best thing to do is to find a way to get out of here (even if it means securing a loan or selling some property). First is to have enough information like about potential companies or institutions in those foreign countries, she can consider France, Germany or Netherland
For sure. I am also a medical biotechnology graduate, I was preferring a diploma in medical laboratory technician rather than paying for masters degree!
Ooh no.. i realized I am not alone. Being brilliant and having had truly excellent academic records and ending up in the " streets" of job search is not only Traumatizing but very heart breaking. Please try applying for healthcare jobs outside kenya like UK, Canada, USA. Keep applying for the USA greencard lottery too. Don't give up...
I honestly feel you. Every time i see my graduation papers and certificates I feel like burning them. Education is extremely expensive, I could have done a lot with that money and time. 😢To me education is a lie we have all been fed.
With microbiology you can get a masters with full funding in the US. I graduated in 2012, stayed unemployed for 5 years and had to make a decision of leaving Kenya. Apply for schools in US.
So sorry for the long wait to secure a job. Unfortunately the Kenyan system does not reward good grades, it’s a system designed otherwise. My thought, it’s never late to start over especially being this bright…the cheapest and easiest way without any agents is to apply for fully funded masters scholarships abroad, USA at the top of the list(then do a masters related to your Microbiology degree as most science degrees are appreciated) and your hard work will greatly reward you. Best of luck Caroline.
Eloquent girl and very confident. The papers are not wasted, in the school of life. But why did they allow her to enrol for PGDE without a second teaching subject?
Mr wambugu never went to biology school but he developed a respected apple tree the wambugu apple know grown by moi university and around the world,so u have a choice to leave kenya or develop ur own biology product eg beneficial microorganisms such as imo, microryzol fungi etc and sell to farmers there's more u can do its just the kenyan system trains on employment if u leave kenya u will realise the school system is more on product development wish u well
I have noticed that u are a very good story teller. In the meantime you may want to reach out to others who have suffered like you and tell their stroies through interviews. Not only will you not be creating windows of job opportunities for them and yourself owing to to the visibility you have created, but you will also start earning money form RUclips. One of the richest RUclipsrs is WODE MAYA from Ghana. This guy us an Engineer but quit Engineering. Think about it dear.
It is a sad statistic but we must accept our reality....The question we must constantly ask every day with the constantly changing world is "What can I do with what I have in my hands."
Millennials is the generation i feel ndio tumechezwa vibaya we might want to put the blame on our parents but it isn't fully their fault I bet they just wanted the best for us because their generation was told to get the grades you'll get a job & that actually worked for them they got the grades & papers and landed decent jobs & the economy was kinder too but the world has changed so much in the last 20 years its almost unrecognizable they gave us a the same formula that worked for them unknowing that the equation of life has changed personally a 2014 graduate & no job 10 yrs later had to learn the hard way this world rewards skills not papers unless you know the right people we still push though.
You've captured the reality so well. The question is, how will the world change in the next 20 years? Could we be preparing our kids for a future that might disappoint them?
Your story is mine, a few short contracts here and there but nothing really to write about. It hurts even deeper when your children ask you why you dont go to work
Girl you are intelligent...why not try a different route....self employment.....maybe do another short course that need to equip you on a business you can start...you can create employment ....for you and others...its not over for you....may GOD make your star shine as you reach to your destiny...all the best dear

I have been through a similar journey, good grades all through to bachelors but no employment. I guess in Kenya getting a job depends on who you know. Otherwise we do stuff online or seek out other avenues of self employment or choose to fly out. For me am not giving up, the financial door must open in a major way in my life.
Yes, a lot needs to change honestly. And reduce intake to useless courses
I understand your frustration all too well. With a license, we could easily access jobs in hospitals but there are no boards to certify our kind

There's need for a complete overhaul

There is no fairness in Job opportunities .
Gone are the days when People got the Jobs soon after graduation .

Heeeeey girl, ....a fellow microbiologist here with a masters and a degree in Bsc Biology ... and lemmie tell you the struggle is real, but I opened up my mind to any opportunities available and life made sense a little....I literally worked as a receptionist in a hospital why?because even though I am a microbiologist am not a licensed lab tech hence am not qualified
This is it. You get me so well. And there's no board that licences microbiologists. It's a tough journey to navigate

Why did the Postgraduate diploma in Education not work?
Any explanation?
You can tell stories. A great gift.
Insufficient chemistry units. Thank you
There needs to be councillors for high school to advise students on programs not worth taking especially degrees that end with studies, art, or business , instead health care, law and engineering have high success rates
I tell you ni God na connection, I graduated as a Quantity Surveyor from Engineering but to date not a single job
Thats a layman thought. Education should be skill based. ..art doesn't dissapoint. Unless u wanna look for a job
True. There's need for a recalibration of young minds to shift away from over-reliance on jobs and get into skill-based courses that can be easily monetized
Sad reality, we now have to hustle to make ends meet
And are the high schoolers sensitised on this? The narrative needs to change from early years
I've noticed many comments talking about going abroad,it's not that easy, just look inside yourself 4 any hidden talent,it may be music, writing, acting, modelling, interrogating pple/interviews,cooking etc, this could be your cycle breaker,we could be in fields that we were never even meant to be in the first place.
I am on that path too
The education system is pretty darn horrible. Highly educated people without jobs is a ticking time bomb. One day, it will explode. Hope your story will teach someone going to campus to choose carefully their majors.
This is my hope. Some courses are a pure waste of resources
Having been a top performer, getting the highest grades and having Aced all through my academics and really not getting the fruits of my efforts I've been through serious series of depression..

With microbiology you can get a masters with full funding in the US. I graduated in 2012, stayed unemployed for 5 years and had to make a decision of leaving Kenya. Apply for schools in US.
This is so inspiring. Thank you 🙏
What is your Facebook name so that I contact you to share with you how to go about applying for a masters in the US
So sorry for the long wait to secure a job.
