- This is the very 1st Cap'n Crunch commercial, by Jay Ward Studios. The people who brought us such great classics as Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hoppity Hooper and (the original) George of the Jungle. Of course, they also brought us all of the Quisp and Quake commercials (also for Quaker). It seems that while Quisp and Quake were battling it out over cereal supremacy, the Cap'n showed up and kicked both their asses (and the orange flavored Quangaroos, Quake's replacement) by a wide margin.
From their inception through the 1970's, ALL of the Cap'n Crunch commercials (and all of the Jay Ward made commercials) were like mini-cartoon shows. After the 70's ended, the commercials became lame crap like most of the other kids commercials of the 80's, and have never returned to their previous glory.

Daws Butler was an amazing voice actor.
He's sorely missed even to this day.
Up until recently I thought Cap'n Crunch was Jim Backus for some reason. I guess I just assumed because I thought Cap'n Crunch sounded a little like Mr. Magoo to my ear lol

The Jay Ward animation style was really fun. The cereal is still very sweet and has those sharp corners (why??). Stays crunchy for probably hours. I like the peanut butter kind-- but I gotta let it sit in milk for 15 minutes, LOL, so it's not like gravel.

1963's Quaker Cap'n Crunch cereal commercial tells a story of a kindhearted, grandfatherly, heroic and friendly late 18th century naval captain in a form of an elderly gentleman with white eyebrows and white moustache called Cap'n Crunch who wears a Revolutionary-style naval uniform, a bicorne hat emblazoned with a "C" and gold-epauletted blue coat with gold bars on the sleeves that has been depicted over the years wearing only one bar (ensign), two bars (lieutenant), or three bars (commander) while typically an American naval captain wears four bars on his sleeves and lives on the good ship Guppy on its sea voyages with his canine first mate Seadog and loyal crew of sailor children named Alfie, Dave, Brunhilde and Carlyle who accompanies him on every command he requires and holds up a package of Cap'n Crunch cereal which, of course, is named after him and contains rightfully crispy and sugary sweet sweetened, yellow, square-shaped cereal pieces made by combining corn and oats that are fun to munch because it keeps its crunch to make it so crisp that it never run its crunching sound which crunches, not even its sugar crystals since it's got two nourishing grains: Corn for Crunch and Oats for Punch sweetened just right and they stays crunchy even in milk. He goes about on several wacky adventures where he fights off against his French-accented arch-nemesis Jean LaFoote the Barefoot Pirate who tries to invade the Guppy in an attempt to steal its cargo of Cap'n Crunch cereal to no avail every time he comes to the rescue.

Ha ha, J Ward, brilliant as usual! I wish these were special features on all the Rocky and Bullwinkle and friends DVD sets. A lot more of these would’ve been just as entertaining as the shows that they were on.
AND he also replaced Mel Blanc as the voice of Barney Rubble for a few episodes of THE FLINTSTONES in its first season when Mel Blanc was recovering from an auto accident.

Even though I never grew up in the 70's, commercials like this are always so nostalgic.
Gotta love Daws Butler. Not only did he voice Cap'n Crunch, he also voiced Quisp.
One friend said that Quisp cereal tasted like Cheese-flavored Capn' Crunch.
I heard it was softer than crunch, which is what let Quisp beat quake back in the day

Yes, these commercials were like another extention of Saturday morning cartoon entertainment. In fact, at the time, CAP'N CRUNCH cereal came with its own mini-comic book tucked inside. I think that QUISP and QUAKE also had mini-comic books insisde. So much great, great Jay Ward entertainment...ironically, General Mills still retains the rights to all the original Jay Ward themes which is probably why HOPPITY HOOPER remains out of circulation, but I'm not saying this as if it were truth. Maybe that will change, someday.
Hoppity Hooper is available from wbcomics.com.he also has a good selection of other oddball ones(NOT CHEAP BUT WORTH IT) but if you order be prepared for a long wait for it to be sent out ( one man show plus he has a store in Sacramento CA)

The last of the Cap'n Crunch ads that were produced by Jay Ward's studio would come out by 1984, after that, it was all over for the Cap'n we knew and loved.
I LOVED Quisp cereal!!! I remember eating it when I was a little kid, in the 70s & even the early 80s (I think). Then, poof, it went away. But recently I read somewhere that die-hard Quisp lovers could once again get their hands on some Quisp, through some website devoted to either just Quisp or old cereal brands in general - I can't remember the name, but if they still have it going, you could find it through Google, I'm sure!!

For those who care about such things, this commercial is available as part of the Mill Creek Entertainment DVD "1001 Classic Commercials". It also contains a boatload of the old Kellogg's cereal ads with the Hanna-Barbera characters like Huckleberry Hound, Yogi & Boo Boo, Snagglepuss, Quick Draw McGraw, Pixie and Dixie w/Jinks the Cat, etc.

I just found yesterday when my mom was little her family was a test family of Cap'n Crunch. They got a case of all white boxes every month & feedback cards to fill out just for the kids of the house.

Danno Kane William Conrad did the voice- over for both R&B and this commercial.
These commercials were did by the same people that did Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I'm here because of the Mandela affect too and am pretty surprised. I used to eat Captain Crunch all the time as a kid and teenager. I don't remember the box or the commercials saying "Cap'n" crunch. I think I would have remembered that. I'm watching the commercials because I thought maybe I was calling it Captain Crunch because they said that in the commercials.. but apparently that's not the case O_o

My mother refused to let me have this cereal because it was too sugary.I resented it at the time but look back & agree.If I had kids I'd do the same as she did.
When this first aired in 1966. I had thought that it was a new show. Television was very much like theater then, and had just developed color. This was a very fast commercial for it's time. The pace was very slow in those days. For a toddler, sitting down and watching "Ruff and Reddy" ,for instance, was like siting with a matronly lady while she read you a story about goldylocks.
