- This one was easy to deal with, but other times they can be stubborn. The basics involve removing the counter threaded lock screw then using an extractor to remove the remnants of the broken drill spindle. If it is badly stuck or rusted you may need to soak in oil and or use heat to get it to loosen up.
Great vid, Ty. I've had several chucks lock up but not break, yet (thanks goodness). Glad for your procedure, advice and opinion.
I have that exact chuck. It has outlived a drill press and 4 pnuematic drills. Ready for it's next job with a new chuck key.
Not surprising, those old US made Industrial Jacobs chucks will survive the apocalypse.
I had a drill as a kid and I wanted to take the chuck off.....I had not idea it was a left hand thread. I've always wondered how can anyone take a chuck off a drill......it burned in as impossible in my memories.
tHanks for the cool video!
I love the fact you coble things together.
Your a tinkerer if you tear apart a watch then put it back together.
Your smarter then me.😁
Hello again Catus Maximus and Tiny
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 Question for you, 1) Is possible to get parts for the chuck? 2) That seemed way too easy to come apart. Is that normal? Again thank you 😊
What do you think the dewalt quick conect chuck have you ever used one?
I have a very small Jacobs chuck with a morse taper. The mounting shank broke off and is stuck in the taper hole of the chuck. Stuck pretty good. Any ideas on how to remove it? There is 1/8" of the shaft protruding. Due to the construction of the chuck I cannot get through from the jaws end to punch it out.
Got it! Was able to drill and tap an #8-32 hole. inserted a cap head screw, secure that in my vise and pry off the chuck. It is a size "0" Jacobs chuck. :-)
An option would be to drill through the front of the chuck at the bottom where there Normally is a hole for a lock screw. Jacobs chucks are not hardened in the middle. Then use a punch to drive out the broken taper spindle.
Thanks I was able to pry the shaft out as I mentioned in my follow-up. :-)@@CatusMaximus
That was way too easy to get out.
