First time for me to see this. Maybe this is a classic but to me it is a new movie; Maine and the great actors. I know fishing is not an easy profession. I remember the lobster boats in New England too growing up.

Boys need fathers, or father figures. Fathers teach empathy, whether considering the harm done when stealing lobsters (livelihood) or making restitution for losing a favorite skiff. This great movie is fiction, but there are so many examples of why fathers are critical to boys: letting them take risks to succeed or fail on their own (within safe parameters) like catching a massive halibut; learning to be magnanimous in victory & gracious in defeat; being responsible for one's decisions instead of blaming others or bad luck. I wish more people would see this movie.
With all due respect, Boomers are largely responsible for destroying the family, social institutions, and their policies created massive crime waves, made the US the worst country on the planet for fatherlessness, exploding suicide rates, and a national mental health crisis. Gen X hasn't had a president yet, so you've nobody else to pass the blame to.
Great movie, a lot of liberals need to see this movie and learn that you don't let people get away with stealing, not even children. You teach them better. It is now legal for adults to steal up to $900 in some cities in America. That is a recipe for crime and evil. And I love how back then, people were respected for being good people, not because they had a lot of money and power. We have really gotten our morals and priorities screwed up in America. This movie reflects the way I grew up as a child in the country in the 1970's. When people were respected for their morality not because they were rich.
I'm liberal and I don't believe people should get away with stealing. Now here's a message to conservatives: when you lose an election don't attack the Capitol.
No people like you who insist on understanding complex social and human problems in terms of poorly defined labels, slogans, and categories should see this movie. But then you just did and understood nothing. Which proves my point.
Those damned liberals, it's so easy to turn anything into a political problem isn't it? It was a damn liberal in office that stole children from their parents and then put them in cages right where they belonged. Then we get a conservative in office that has to find and reunite them with their parents. All because they wanted a better life for those same children and themselves. How dare America be the place of love and hope!
It becomes so easy to judge a child when you never stop and think about what traumas that child has suffered. This was a beautifully expressed example of love and understanding. To bad today someone has to make it political instead of stopping and thinking about what brings a child to make his or her decisions. Poverty can send a child on the wrong path faster than you would think. That is what we face in America today and yet we turn a blind side to it's affects. Now this child was not impoverished yet he had very similar scars of his own trauma. A child's mind is complex yet his brain is not fully developed yet, still we impose without diligent thought as to what may have caused his thinking to get so confused. This was a wonderful movie. I am so glad I have gotten to see it today.
Moreover, looking across all 24 cities, the prevalence of shoplifting in 2023 remained below 2018 and 2019 levels. Even San Francisco-which has often been cited as having a “shoplifting epidemic”-saw a 5% decline in shoplifting between 2019 and 2023.
A tearjerker, but watchable on a rainy afternoon.

A bit overwrought but the cast made it tolerable.
Very tolerable. In fact, I enjoyed it.
