I remember playing saxophone at a church Christmas concert. When it was my turn to play, I gave a brief speech about the theme of my performance. I then asked the audience to hold their applause until the end of the performance. The audience didn’t understand the request and applauded anyway. After the concert I did an “Elvis has left the building.” I had to go to work the next morning.

This episode explains modern concert etiquette perfectly! We've all heard the poor soul who starts to clap after a first movement only to abruptly stop when no one else does. Also, when the audience stands during the final ovation most people tend to do likewise whether or not they enjoyed the performance (it's lonely being the only person still sitting).
Regarding "encores," the first-time concert goer might be confused when a piece is played after the last piece on the program. "Encore" originally meant to "play it again" following a movement of a symphony or sonata, or following an operatic aria. Once Beethoven was furious to find out that every piece on a chamber-music program was "encored" except one, the "Grosse Fuge" (Great Fugue). Beethoven had some choice words for that audience!

I believe they call all of this “common sense”… but that may not be so common as the mane implies. I can’t believe you made a chart for the moment to clap! 😂

Current etiquette would be horrified at the audiences during the actual Classical era. They talked, applauded after each movement, and made their enjoyment (or lack thereof) heard. Performers (and composers) had to work hard for their attention (and respect).

I have mixed feelings about being taken to classical concerts before age 8. It was a long time to sit, and I don't think I really appreciated some performances, but my mother knew I would always behave well.

You just spoke about clapping your hands at the end of a piece of music. Well well well there was in Europe in the beginning opera house or any performance, a group of people which were called the clutch or the club in English and they started to clap their hands when it was appropriate and the rest of the audience did the same in the right time the clutch was famous they got paid for it very little but they did it and this was really something it was mainly in Europe like in Germany And son enjoy

An exception to the no-clap rule: Growing up in the NYC area, I was taught that it was OK to clap after movement one of a concerto if the soloist was especially good. But maybe that was a regional thing.

What is the proper way to present a gift to your favorite performer? I've read that opera singers got gift from their fans, so I wonder if a classical musician also have the same treatment from theirs? Sometimes you appreciate an artist very much that you want to convey that appreciation by presenting a gift.

I have a problem, maybe I’m not sure when I wake up in the morning I don’t listen to the news I don’t look for the weather forecast I’ll listen to an opera it can be Paliotti. Can we go Valerio Sagana Fledermaus part of Rosenkavalier then it goes to Pacini. It might be mine_I’m talking about listening to the full opera is not a part of it. I am It sounds a bit crazy, but I love it makes my day and whenever have a moment to listen to opera again and again and again I love Rigoletto which was the best opera which made the valley really famous people don’t know about it maybe I did was the opera Verdi became famous for it cause beautiful story in the lovely cause music, so is everything else I like Yvonne Wagner I love Igal, but I love to listen to Gardner in the winter because it takes long to listen t So don’t be a fanatic like me there is a reason but enjoy the most beautiful time passing hobby in life so enjoy the creation which was given to us as a present in good health and happiness and remember happiness is a journey not a destination. Don’t forget it. Enjoy for the love of opera..

I have been performing and attending ballet for over 50 years. Going to the ballet is like attending the Opera. You dress up. I performed Don Q with Nureyev and everyone in the front was dressed to the 9's. Every man was in a dark suit tie or Tux and there wasn't a Gala. Just respect the Art form. I Remember how the men were slouching. Then Rudi came on stage to do his 3rd act Solo. You could hear a pin drop. When the men realized how he commanded the stage they all sat up straight and didn't make a sound. You could hear the relief when he made his pose and the baton dropped and he went flying across the stage. It's a shame the new generation is not aware of dressing up. It makes you feel good. Enjoy the Ballet "everything is Beautiful at the Ballet.."
