  • Here is my first review of carbon pencils (different than graphite pencils and also different than charcoal pencils!). I demonstrate the different look/qualities of them and link to purchase is below!
    NEW INFORMATION:
Since I filmed this vlog, I've heard from some of you who also noticed the change in the Mars Lumograph Pencils, so when I couldn't find more information on their website, I emailed Staedtler and got this response:
"We are sorry that we caused some confusion with the Lumograph series.
At the beginning of 2016 we integrated the Lumograph 100-7B and 100-8B into our Lumograph black series (for artists). So the pencil that was formerly called 100-7B now has the article number 100B-6B and the former 100-8B is now 100B-8B. They are not blue but black lacquered: www.staedtler....
So you are absolutely correct in noticing that there has been a change. Unfortunately, this information has not reached all our customers. We are very sorry for this."
Really great to know that there was a recent change, as I had observed, and that the company was so responsive to my inquiry.

These aren't full carbon pencils. They are carbon-graphite mix pencils. This allows them to stick on graphite surfaces better compared to fully carbon pencils. I do absolutely love to use them IN COMBINATION with standard graphite (I like the faber-castell 9000) and find them a must have for the way I like to draw.

There has been debate amongst artists like us for the last decade about the ingredients in the Mars Lumograph lines of pencils. I wish the Staedtler website revealed more but all it says is "Special lead formulation containing a high proportion of carbon for matt, jet black results" for the Mars Lumograph Black pencils. It seems their formulation of Mars Lumograph pencils, they don't reveal anything about the graphite/clay/lamp black formulation on their website, but in my observation, the formulations have changed slightly over the last 10 years... Don't they know we're all obsessed??? HAH! Good to know you layer the Black with graphite- I'll try it out!

My theory is the Mars Lumograph Black is more like how the Mars Lumograph were formulated about 5 years ago... but I don't have the old pencils to prove it. Just my hunch, from my observations of students using Mars Lumograph next to other graphite pencils over the last decade.

What I know is that the 8B and 6B formula for the older sets of regular mars Lumograph are the same as the current Lumograph Black 8B and 6B pencils. Following the release of the separate series, Mars Lumograph Black, Steadtler decided to change the formula of the Regular Lumograph's 6B, 7B and 8B to an all-graphite formula (no carbon). To put it simply, during the times where there were no Lumograph Black pencils, the 6B-8B regular pencils had the graphite-carbon mix. After the two series were separated the Regular Lumograph no longer has any graphite-carbon mix pencils and all the Lumograph Black pencils are

Yes! You got it. I love that artists are sharing the knowledge! Thank you! That is what I suspected, for the last decade, because the darker values just didn't look like graphite, they looked too black/speckly/not shiny. After our dialogue the other day, I emailed Staedtler this weekend to inquire and just got their reply, along with data sheets (that don't reveal too much) on the composition of the different sets. This is from their email:
"At the beginning of 2016 we integrated the Lumograph 100-7B and 100-8B into our Lumograph black series (for artists). So the pencil that was formerly called 100-7B now has the article number 100B-6B and the former 100-8B is now 100B-8B. They are not blue but black lacquered. So you are absolutely correct in noticing that there has been a change."
Awesome to find out my observations were very close to correct, straight from the company, and to share our observations here. Thanks for telling me what you know!

Do you know if it's possible to mix both, graphite and carbon pencils together? I mean, this Lumograph Black can be applied above a standard graphite surface? or the trace is rejected by the graphite?

just a note, for my set of lumograph blacks, the label on the case were 8b 6b 4b x2 2b x2, but the contents were 8b, 7b, 6b, 4b, 2b, and hb. no idea if its an updated version though.

Woah that is odd!! Haven’t heard of that happening but honestly I think you got a better set than the label says 😆

I thumbs down this because I've tried and I don't personally like combining the two... I love graphite through and through ! :) Thanks for watching!

Realistic Art By Jainil I’m glad for that as it makes more interesting variations in artwork! I just adore graphite and can’t give it up.

It would be nice to see how carbon's erasability compares to graphite
