    I had never heard of Attack heads and was always an Evans guy but recently got a kit that had these installed on the toms and I love them. Ended up putting the same head on my kick drum and then switched out my snare heads to attack as well. Really happy with the whole kit and how it's sounding with these heads. Definitely worth checking out. No gels or muffling needed on the toms at all.

    Reminds me of the hydraulics, pretty much all attack and tone, but very little sustain.
    The UV2’s also did a good job with the overtones and keeping the drum alive and sounding big with solid rebound.
    I still spend a lot of time learning and messing with the tones coming from my hydraulics, but I’d probably put these Attack heads in between coated UV2’s and Hydraulics or those two had a baby and this happened.

    Based on this review, I finally ordered some. Coated 12/14/16. These are the best tom heads Ive ever used! I was using Remo Emperors, but couldnt quite get them where I consistently liked the tone and sustain....was using 3 moon gels on the floor toms and 2 on the rack tom. The Attack ToneRidge 2s are absolute beasts right out of the box! They have the best aspects of the hydraulic style heads, but that welt is just amazing! They have the perfect amount of sustain with no gels at all (1/2 gel on the 12, but none on the 14 and 16). They sound eq'd! Im never going back....these heads are perfect!

    I am very tempted to try these Clear Tom heads. I tried the 2 ply coated Attack batter heads, and single ply coated reso heads and NG for me. Granted I have a cheapo Gammon drum kit with 12, 13 and 16 inch Toms. I was able to get a pretty decent DOOOOO. DOOOO sound - (See Jared onm Drumeo - tuning Toms), with Remo coated Reso heads and Evans G1 Clear batter heads. But I need moongel and or Gatt tape to control the resonance. But watching this Sounds Like a Drum video from Cory, has wet my appetite for these. I'll get just the Batter heads, keep the Remo Reso heads. For the record, I have added a DW Nickel over Brass 14 inch snare (with an Evans HD dry batter head - used) , a pdp concept maple 10 X 8 tom (really like that drum), and a pdp concept maple piccolo 10 inch snare mounted on the Hi Hat stand. Next Stop: TRade this in and get a new (or gently used) quality drum kit. The choices are mind numbing..... I'm 69 YO, and solely a recreational player of drums as a retirement hobby /pleasure, after a 51 Year Hiatus at age 18 in a Garage Band that never got out of the garage.... Be well all

Attack heads are hard to get right now but after seeing all their heads I like these. Not sure about kick drum heads just yet, still using emad2 from Evans. I’ll soon order the Eric Singer snare heads and give them a try. I like Attack heads better than Evans or Remo. Wish I had found Attack sooner!!!

    • @EdenPorterMusic
      @EdenPorterMusic 4 года назад

      it's pretty much between these and the EQ2 if evans still makes those. i'm also not a fan of pinstripes. i think the EQ2s are probably less 'muffled-sounding' than this, these seem between EQ2s and pinstripes

    • @danlc95
      @danlc95 4 года назад

      In 1999 the PinStripe received an "upgrade".
      In its inception in the late 90's, the PinStripe consisted two plies of 7 mil film adhered around the collar, up onto the cosmetic stripe on the playing surface of the head. This gave the head a lot of control, and depth.
      In 1999, they stopped gluing the plies together, and instead, that "cloudy" area around the circumference of the head is a "dry layer" of what Remo calls "ring reducing agent".
      The Attack is closer to the original PinStripes before 1999.
      You might also consider the Aquarian Performance II clear heads.

    • @danlc95
      @danlc95 4 года назад

      @@EdenPorterMusic - The EC2 was the more open out of all the pre muffled two ply heads in my experience. Especially the current version. They're pretty nice heads. The original with the metal colored plastic laminate ring was thicker and closer to the PinStripe.

    I have two questions:
    1) Should I tune my toms to resonate with each other ( Rack tuned with intervals from A to C and a floor tom from G to E)?
    2) How do you get the tom pitches to be at a third interval?

    • @scottmcfadyen293
      @scottmcfadyen293 4 года назад

      I use a drumdial to tune them to exacting pitches. and then i tune them to the same pitch but make sure to use different types of heads. i use two ply coated heads on top and one ply clears on the bottom. it will give you a rich voice(pitch bend) by using different type of heads when you tune them both the same.

  • @danlc95

    Cory, How do you compare these to The Evans EC2 SSTs? I am currently playing G1s Clear batter heads on my cheapo Gammon Toms (12, 13 and 16"). With using 2 moongels on the 12 and 13 inch Toms, I have been able to achieve a pretty acceptable sound (of course Not like You have on those Pearls), but I need to use 5 moongels on the 16 inch Tom. That drum is a POIA to achieve decent sound. BTW, I have Remo coated Reso heads on all the Toms. Your or other Drummers' opinions are most welcome. Be safe all.

    Thanks so much for the review. I'm looking for that kind of sound for recording right now; resonance and sustain, but with punch and focus. I would have never known about these without your channel.
    A small criticism... I know it's a personal preference, but I'm just not digging your snare sound. It sounds cranked to the moon and ringy and thin. I find it detracts from the sound of the rest of your kit. Just one guy's opinion, but since your channel is all about drum sounds...
    I used to have the same type of sound, but I've found over time that by lowering the top head, and especially the snare side head, the drum opens up a lot and gives some more presence. I'm not one for that really low tuning some people use, but a little more resonance actually brings a lot more character out of the drum, I've found. Again, not trying to be a jerk, so take it or leave it... just one guy's opinion.

      There's actually quite a bit of attack from these heads (which seems to be a consistent and fitting theme with their entire line of drumheads). There's also an immediacy of tone with these that a lot of heads fail to produce so you might not be hearing attack the same way you expect to.

      Originally they were called Dead Heads (with a tank as a logo) until Grateful Dead fans expressed anger over the name.
      Up close they have a lot of low punchy tone without the ringing you get from regular heads but from a distance they sound kinda dead.
      When I was in high school we used them on our tenors for a tight sound because at the time (90’s) they were the only company with metal crimped hoops that didn’t pop out of the hoop when tuned to high pitches. Personally I prefer these over Evans hydraulic heads or Remo power dot heads because the Attack heads still have tone whereas the the others are just dead.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 года назад +3

      We would define these as "controlled" rather than "dead." They're lively in the moment and then quickly gate naturally, which can be ideal for faster/heavier playing and certainly recording scenarios. They're present and then they get out of the way. Now you could squeeze more sustain out of them by varying the reso tuning and if you're miking them up you could compress them a bit for a longer sustain but that's not always ideal based on the context.
