Regarding noise-reduction: I know that there exist tape, that has aluminum, copper or some other metal on one side and sticks on the other side. I've used some of this tape before and it did help me a lot in my own made radio.
Man your videos are so clean ! You explain everything, the rythme of your voice, the cuts and everything are perfect. The image is good, the music background is great, not to loud, just so we can hear it, you're fast frowarding the long parts, and finally, you give people other options and you stay open to suggestions and upgrades such as the custom parts made by forum members ! Really great job mate, i hope you'll start a new project after this one ! And by the way, have you got a training for what you do ? like a degree in electrical engineering or something like this , or is it just a hobby ?
Hey thanks! That means a lot. :) It's just a hobby for me, I'm a software developer by day (studied computer science in college). And yes, more projects to come, for sure!
+wermy How did you learn all that ? I really want to learn and practice , but i don't know where to start ! I'm studying engineering so i know the basic suff, but i don't know how to practice it. Anyway thanks for anwsering !
I actually hold soldering iron once in my whole life but I'm definitely going to do that. I have no knowledge about this stuff but you inspired me. Thanks. Keep up the great work.
After watching the first of these videos I went and got myself a many parts as I could to make this, but due to my lack of knowledge on a lot of this stuff I'm pretty freaked out that I may break something. But hey awesome ass videos, keep up the good work!
Hi! I love the tutorials and I am starting to build mine later this week. I had a quick question about the option to skip the cartridge input. If you were to plug it directly into the raspberry pi board do you still need to hook all the wires up from the cartridge reader to the raspberry pi? Could you just glue it in so you can pop non working cartridges in and out for cosmetic looks?
is there anything way to wire a male usb port to the sd card in the cartridge? I wanted to make a console version of this but don't want to remove the micro SD when adding roms. just plug the cart into the pc via usb
+Karl Cox (SwagCorp Prod) yep. It's just way too time consuming to crank these out; it would basically be a second job, which wouldn't work for me at the moment. :)
Hello Wermy, i am trying this out on the new Pi Zero W, but there is a PAD difference on them. your "green" wire for the cartridge reader. Do you by any chance know which pad that should go to on the new pi zero?
Honestly just inherent geekiness and love for this kind of thing since I was a kid, and a liberal amount of googling. :) Stop by the forums if you're interested in trying your hand at this project! I've seen lots of people who had never touched a soldering iron previous to this having a go at it. sudomod.com/forum
I haven't tried it yet but I'm told you can use the GBA cartridge reader from a DS Lite, you just have to trim off a couple bits of plastic. Like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-DS-DS-Lite-GBA-game-cartridge-card-reader-slot-Repair-Part-/172090308991?hash=item281161b97f:g:NTAAAOSwRH5XK77l As for the Pi 3, the most I'd recommend is a Pi 2 for this. Pi 3 sucks down a LOT of power and gets very very hot.
I did have some problems initially like that. I added some shielding and tried a few different SD cards until I found one that worked. Haven't had any issues at all since then. It is very fiddly though, I will say that. There is a guy in the forums who is selling a pre-made cartridge->SD card board that has some filtering built-in that makes it much less picky.
Is it necessary to create the SD card cartridge if you are OK with leaving the SD card buried inside the gameboy? I have a retropie system that I built from a pi 2 and I have it set up for wi-fi and just plug in a wi-fi dongle to add/remove games. Could I do that with the Gameboy Zero too? It seems like it could save a lot of steps and you could still insert a blank cartridge to fill the space.
Hi Wermy! I was just going to do a very similar project as well and stumbled upon your video series: really excellent work here. Now what I was trying to solve before finishing mine is one thing I could not find an elegant solution so far nowere:how about shutting down the gameboy zero? I mean there is need of some circuit that can on a press of a button/switch send a shutdown -h now to the retropi os and then after some delay cut off power otherwise batteri would still be drained (not to speak that just cutting out power is also bad for the sd on the first place..)-> any ideas?
Hey there, Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it. In my build, I'm just using the menu item for "Shutdown System" in RetroPie (which I presume just calls something like 'sudo shutdown -h now'). A second or two after the screen turns off, I turn off the switch. That's worked well for me, I haven't seen any text about the dirty shutdown bit being on whenever it boots. If you're looking for a more comprehensive solution there are some cool things being worked on in the forums you should check out -- specifically: sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=97 for a software solution, and sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=46 where one user is working on a pretty cool custom board that lets you call the shutdown command with the push of a button.
to make things easier: just cut of the chips with the dremel... that way youll get pins you can easily use and are able to skip cleaning the solder from the board
Kotinai You will always need a raspberry pi to emulate the games. The zero version of the raspberry pi will be powerful enough to emulate original gameboy/color and GBA games
looks like your 270 ohm resistor on the input of the low pass filter is running in parallel to the trace it's connected to on either side, thus not doing anything
These are great videos and i'm looking forward to the new ones coming. I had a question though. Would it be possible to do the same to a rasberry pi 3 and use the SD card test pads on that board?
Hello. Awesome video but i want to ask if i replace the cartridge chip with the sd adapter will it work without any modifications to the gameboy? And will it work with multiple games?
Is there a way for a RasPi to read an actual cartridge instead of a SD card? I'm trying to find out if I can restore my old GameBoy Color with modern parts to keep that retro feel. I want to spare as many of the original parts as possible, but the control board is completely bust, hence the need to replace it. I also want to add the SD reader as an option (along with the extra buttons this project has), but the main thing should be to use it as if it was the original.
I'm building one of these using a USB soundcard for audio an iv build my own circuitry for the controls, problem I'm having is I need to connect both via USB to the pi zero and when using a USB 4 port hub the pi isn't recognising anything plugged into the hub, iv tried various hubs and various pi zeros same result, any suggestions? Thanks
Hey, I read the guide on your site and I was curious - can you get away with using any GPIO pin for the mono audio? I'm using the one you mentioned for input, so I was curious. I'm using a GBA shell, and plan to take apart a USB audio adapter to use for sound - I was originally going to just stick the jack in the shell, but after hearing this, I'd love to add a speaker, and the GBA one works fine.
+wermy yeah mostly for the video screen, I ordered one that was suppose to work, but got a different board than everyone else. I think I'm just psyching myself out.
I don't understand why you wouldn't just glue in the cartridge connector for looks, but just the SD-Card reader already on the raspberry zero. Why go through all this trouble to make this when it won't even work on a regular gameboy game anyway? All the games will have to be put on the SD-Card anyway. Also, with the new zero W, you can connect to wifi and download your games anyway.
wermy kool. they might wanna look at the google glass mods that are out there as well. and wearable computer sytems as well. as custom thermal electric.com as wwell just a few thoughts?....

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, I didn't have any of that on-hand so I had to cobble together my own with aluminum foil and electrical tape. :)
wermy You're welcome :D
Thanks for these awesome videos!
so amazing what a community of people can create when they come together.
This is one of the best build series I've seen yet. I'm definitely going to try this.

It's just a hobby for me, I'm a software developer by day (studied computer science in college). And yes, more projects to come, for sure!
+wermy How did you learn all that ? I really want to learn and practice , but i don't know where to start ! I'm studying engineering so i know the basic suff, but i don't know how to practice it. Anyway thanks for anwsering !
Something very therapeutic about watching these vids!
Please keep up the good work! I am loving this guide and truly appreciate all of your effort!
I really need to learn more about the pi. I feel I'm missing out on so much. I don't quite understand the programming ect.
This series are great! I love watching and learning stuff. Thanks for the hard work!
I actually hold soldering iron once in my whole life but I'm definitely going to do that. I have no knowledge about this stuff but you inspired me. Thanks.
Keep up the great work.
+TheTeriffy thanks! Glad you're enjoying it. :)
As always, really awesome work wermy. Glad to have these for such clear instruction.
How would I go about doing this with a Sega Genesis cartridge and cartridge reader?
Big up to you Sir. Well explained and enjoyable series. I really consider building one myself.
After watching the first of these videos I went and got myself a many parts as I could to make this, but due to my lack of knowledge on a lot of this stuff I'm pretty freaked out that I may break something. But hey awesome ass videos, keep up the good work!
what's the chances of shorting the components in these videos? I think I might have handled components before without grounding myself
When Can we get a part list and links that would be awesome.. Well more so than this already is .
Parts list is already up on the wiki at sudomod.com/wiki. Maybe I should advertise that more, haha. :)
Sadly i found it 2 minutes after i posted this but thank you.

Is there a place where I could get that pcb at 11:10?
what about reading a dumping gb games that ben better to be able read or own game boy games
@@NoFaceCobain please dont. just fucking dont. as far as you know they are just bad at typing, or are learning english, etc.
The 4th Steve yes.
i would have to get a lot better at soldering before i would even attempt this.
Great job man.
These build guides are awesome and I seriously want one but I don't think I could put one together. Why can't I find one of these for sale anywhere?
been asking that since...forever. probably too time consuming. once you allow an order for one customer...20 more show up. that's just a guess though.
+Karl Cox (SwagCorp Prod) yep. It's just way too time consuming to crank these out; it would basically be a second job, which wouldn't work for me at the moment. :)
Maybe a ferrite bead around the wires for the sd reader would cut down on the interference. Also why so long?
Hello wermy I was wondering what parts you need for making the Gameboy, could you leave a link showing all the things you need?
He has a wiki where he has a list of all the parts used
Parts list can be found at sudomod.com/wiki. :)
Loving all these videos
which pin on the amplifier does the audio signal connect to?
Hey where did you happen to get the black Gameboy cartridge PCB? I got a neat project idea in which those would be amazing.
I want to do this but, with the minty pi
I'm going to be, mounting the sdcard reader to the bottom of the tin
Hello Wermy, i am trying this out on the new Pi Zero W, but there is a PAD difference on them. your "green" wire for the cartridge reader. Do you by any chance know which pad that should go to on the new pi zero?

+wermy oh im already signed up lol, im gonna start after its all said and done... wana win this badboy! hahaha
why mus a capacitor to be soldered to the SD card adapter? And what kind of capacitor is that?
is there anywhere I can get the cartridge reader without tearing apart a gameboy? also can this be used on the raspberry pi 3?

I want to know that the music video cassette transformation is the name of what
I think you short out the 270 Ohm Resistor in the Audio PCB
Do you mean on the back side?
Yes i think on the prototyping board the 2 holes where you put the resistor in are connected
Ah, nice catch, thanks! I'll put a note that that trace should be cut.
By the way cool project and well explained.
Would the cartridge reader work on the raspberry pi 3
With the cartridge what's the max sdcard that can be used? Just wondering cause I know the RPi 3 maxes out at 32GB.
Dragon_princ€
Any amount as long as it is formatted as FAT32 or normal FAT
Would exfat work?
no but it is easy to change the format on iMac
(just go to the disk utility app)
your gonna have to search google for other Operating Systems

can i make an flash cart for the gba using this technique
can it work with a normal sd instead of an adadpter?
Pedro Seba
Yes but you can't swap them
to make things easier: just cut of the chips with the dremel... that way youll get pins you can easily use and are able to skip cleaning the solder from the board
Safer to solder
sorry, what is the title of the song to 9 min?
i like this song
Nothing to be sorry about! :) It's "thingy" by turkdirty.
Do i even need the cartridge, or can my PI just use the existing usb slot

How could I do this with an NES or SNES cardtridge?
from where did you get the cartridge with the micro sd included (the card slot) for the classic game boy? :D
Ktisch-Bent
what gauge wire are you using?
Capacitor 104 of 103 is ok?
For those of us who are done with all the parts up to five, when could we expect part six to come out?
Should be at some point this weekend. :)
Awesome!!!
Could I use a ds lite Game boy cartridge reader for my pi build
I have one fast question:
How can I download a game on to the card ? I made one by my self and I have no idea where I can download a game :(
Casper Tak thank you so so so so much !!!! :)
How can I connect a game boy cartridge slot in Raspberry PI 3?
Hi buddy can you use pi zero w many thanks
you say so much links aer in the box below ???? where are the link ?????????
i see 1 link
Would the flash cart work with a gba or do I need a SD reader
how much did this whole project cost
where do you get the sd card for game boy zero?
Stu-ool One word ebay
does it run on a gameboy gameboy color or gameboy advance
why u don't create a single electronic board for game boy zero with all components and escape from these all complications
Having started this project when only the first two videos were out, I think I may have bit off more than I can chew.
Stick with it! With practice you'll be able to finish it
What +martcus2727 said. :) Have you stopped by the forums yet? Lots of people working their way through it with little-to-no prior experience!

Richard Smith he did it because it looks interesting, and it's a creative way to swap SD cards.
Richard Smith The wireless version wasn't released when he created this video. Plus some gamers like the nostalgia feeling when inserting a cartridge.
It's for the aesthetic
11:25 againnnn you put a link below WHERE ARE THE link thats disgusting
Click on the link. Everything I mention is linked to within that page.
wermy ok ??
Here it is if you're not able to see the video description for some reason: sudomod.com/game-boy-zero-guide-part-5/
noo heee said exactly this link is in the describtion for the special thing not for the website
Hi wermy i need yours help habe you little Bit time?
Does this play real game boy cartridges?
Some chupquick may of helped removing the chip
Thanks! I had never heard of this before.
+wermy chipquick
+wermy my auto correct was playing up again
+Vincent Lee chupquick isn't even a word so don't blame it on autocorrect
Videos are well made, you have a sub from me. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Can u do this on a pi 3
Would the cartridge work in a real gameboy?
what would happen if you put on in a gameboy
JB bongo iT Will explode
Damn it must be satisfying to solder to the sd card reader pads...
why not just make a board the encompases every thing. you need on one board?
Well I mean, yeah, that would of course be ideal. :) There are actually some guys on the forums working on just that!
wermy
kool. they might wanna look at the google glass mods that are out there as well. and wearable computer sytems as well. as custom thermal electric.com as wwell just a few thoughts?....
Yes!
Guide for SNES cartridge sdcard
If i were to load roms and put it on the cartridge, would a real gameboy read it?
by chance were you inspired by my youtube videos and hackaday post? i did this last summer as a prototype. never finished it out like you have
playing it fast and loose with that x-acto knife, i would definitely have sliced my fingers open xD
can i use this also as an flashcard for the original Gameboy
It's a passthrough only
what my mom sees when i reset the wifi router
Really cool!
The brown resistor is doing nothing - both legs are shorted together.
Excellent.
and u about more long cable more energy will be lost
Great dude!
I want to buy a premade game boy zero, but they're so expensive!
very cool
Nice'' but it needs a diagram of the invention you made.
