You have inspired me into having a go at repairing the gear box on a second hand Kaaz mower instead of buying a new one, as in the past I have always failed badly.
Very interesting and informative video. Thank you. I know these mowers retail for close on £1400. Out of interest how easy/difficult was it to source the parts and how much in total did you have to spend to get it running properly again? In terms of repairing mowers what makes are the best to work on and conversely are there brands to avoid?
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful, the parts were sourced fairly easily off the internet, the gearbox parts came to around £75, which isn't bad considering a new gearbox is £300, and the bearing was sourced off a bearing supplier for around £7 as it was a standard size. The mowers that seem to be the best to work on tend to be Hondas and other premium mowers, in general, the more expensive the mower is the easier they seem to be to repair as the cheaper mowers such as Mountfield's tend to be more "disposable" and aren't as good to work on, however, can still be repaired quite easily. The engines are all quite similar on most mowers but the drive systems seem to show the difference in repairability with cheap mowers having none-serviceable gearboxes. Also, on the cheaper mowers that have steel decks, the deck tends to rot out well before the engine gives up. If the deck is in good shape and the engine isn't seized though most mowers can be repaired and parts availability is relatively good for most mowers. We're in the process of restoring another mower so stay tuned!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video, we have been looking at getting an impact gun, especially for working on blades and BBC's. The sandpaper was P400 wet and dry, however, I'm sure any sandpaper would do the job.
Great video has helped me out a lot as i am in middle of restoring the exact same mower, any tips on removing the steel rollers at 10:06 i cant seem to get the first side of no matter how much i hammer it, would a blow torch work as i think i can see plastic on the bearing haha
Hi, glad the video has been helpful, those rollers are a pain to remove. We've just recently repaired another Honda pro mower which had rollers that were seized on and we used a blow torch on the splines of the gearbox. If you blowtorch the gearbox end you should be quite far away from the bearings. They do take a while to remove, the one in the video took a lot of hammering. Good luck.
@@snazzymowers1409 thanks again, got it off in the end, all striped and cleaned out but i now have a new issue haha, what oil does the gearbox take do you know? all i can see online is "sae 90 iso 220" but not sure if thats right, thanks again for the help
@@martinhall3879 Hi, glad you got it off, we couldn't find the correct gearbox oil specifications, so put some gearbox oil in that we already had in the garage. The mower seemed to work fine with no ill-effects, however, I wouldn't recommend this. Maybe get in contact with Honda, or a local dealer? Sorry I couldn't be more help. Thanks.
@@snazzymowers1409 thanks for the reply, picked it up but doesn’t start, would the electric part effect it starting up as need to get a charger for that but wondered if it’s dead would it effect the start up with pull cord 😀
I have the exact same mower, deck is uneven, thought it was bearing in roller but seem fine and replaced bearings on outside of gearbox- any ideas why when I step on left side to pull start the deck rocks- wheel bearings?
Yes the wheel bearings could have gone, or potentially the front wheels may have come lose or not be bolted on properly. We had issues on one of these mowers where the bracket that holds the front wheel on wasn't fitted properly. This led to wobble and the front height kept dropping.
I have the 4 wheel version of this Kaaz Mower. How do you remove the rear wheels? One wheel just clicks as you undo the bolt and the other feels like resistance on the pawl sprocket ( prefer not to put excessive undoing force on that) Is there a way to hold the driveshaft? When you undo the bolt through the wheel?
Hi, we've never had a four wheel Kaaz mower so unfortunately can't be much help, the roller just bolts off on the roller models. You could maybe try and hold it with a set of vice grips? Sorry I couldn't be much help.
The part that your fitting in the gearbox at 14:15 ...what is it ?? I have one of these lawnmowers branded kaaz but identical and I've notice from the outside of the gearbox that this part seems to be popping out and the drive isn't working
Hi, the part is the clutch fork, it moves the clutch plate up and down to engage/disengage the drive. We've had mowers where the 2 bits on the fork that make contact with the clutch have completely worn, meaning the drive won't engage. This could maybe be why the drive isn't working on your mower.
The gearbox was filled up to the drain plug, the engine supposedly takes 0.65L but it would probably be slightly less than that as you wouldn't be able to drain it all out. Thanks for watching.
It's not really meant to be a pro repair, it has helped many people repair their mowers. It would be great if we had all the pro tools, but we can't really warrant things like a bearing press, which are expensive and wouldn't get much use.

Thanks for the comment, good luck, should save you a fair bit of money if you're successful.
Ah that unmistakable Honda sound. You guys are amazing 👍 Tam.
Glad you like it, Thanks for watching.
Just bought a Honda with the older style gxv160 engine, it smokes a lot so I’ve stripped it down and will re ring it, great vid
Thanks for the watching, good luck with your re-ring.
cracking job, keep up the good work.
Good job guys!!
And great video! Congratulations! And thank you for a such video!

Great video. An impact gun makes working on the bbc much easier. What grit sand paper did you use on the brake surfaces? Thanks!

Hi can you do a tutorial on how to start it up please as I’m picking one up second tomorrow 😉
It just starts like a normal mower put it on choke and then pull the cord and it should fire up. The levers are for the blade and drive.
@@snazzymowers1409 thanks for the reply, picked it up but doesn’t start, would the electric part effect it starting up as need to get a charger for that but wondered if it’s dead would it effect the start up with pull cord 😀
It shouldn't effect the pull cord start, because a magneto makes the spark, which doesn't need the battery
Good job.

7:26 You haven't any grinder to sharpen the blade fast? But good job :)
We use a bench grinder now, it's much faster. Thanks for watching :)
@@snazzymowers1409 I use angle grinder with regulation using flap disc and low press. It gives better surface than stone of bench grinder ;)
How much oil does it call for?

👌
What you're going to run it without grease you need to put grease in there
Haven't seen a pro tool yet all shade tree mechanic tools
No comment
If this is supposed to be pro repair then you're supposed to have pro tools to put together and take it apart and you need narration to the video

come on, they did a good job doesn't matter what tools they have. will definitely help people fix their mowers so thanks for the video guys
