      I'm in the market for some new Cozy Fantasy titles to add to my growing collection.
      Are there any ones you might recommend?

      @@SilverScribe85ah, not sure what you’ve already picked up, but The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, Legends and Lattes, and a Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking are all quite cozy :) I’ve done some cozy recommendations videos if you’re looking for other books though!

      I also pre-ordered the sequel to House in the Cerulean Sea...but I still crave MORE

    One of my favorite elements of The Starling House was how the main characters are described as the opposite of beautiful with characteristics that are deemed ugly or less desirable in society. You end up caring about them because you grow to see them as caring or good people. I want more of that in books. So often hot or beautiful is a shortcut for we should care about these characters because of the halo effect.

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  7 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, I agree! That element of the book was done quite well 😊

      I was just discussing this with a friend. I need more unconventionally attractive/ normal/ average main characters and less of the perfect pretty/handsome characters. I think I would relate to them more😂

    Starling House is AMAZING. I dropped what was next on my TBR when it came out because FINALLY a novel set in my home state of Kentucky. And the little Kentucky Easter eggs Alix tossed in there made my heart so happy. I don’t really consider it a fantasy, but I do consider it a gothic. It’s a modern southern gothic (more like a Faulkner style gothic story) set in a dying coal mining town. Just amazing. It gets down to the nitty gritty of the small town collective trauma. The house isn’t really the point. It’s about the town. And Alix Harrow is from here. She knows our state traumas and culture and she writes it so beautifully. She isn’t an outsider trying to guess or place judgment on the things we do or think. She just shows it. And she does it so beautifully. It’s a gothic commentary more than anything else.

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  7 месяцев назад

      I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! And that’s really great about all the easter eggs :) I actually wish the town itself had played a bigger role as well. I think a little too much focus for me was placed on the romance, but the history of the town, and how truth can be lost and warped to history, were things I wish had gotten more time.

      The first book doesn’t have much, but the second has a lot toward the second half, and I’ve heard (as I’ve not picked it up just yet) that the third is almost a horror book more than fantasy 😮😮😮

    • @kurjan1
      @kurjan1 7 месяцев назад +4

      @@ebnovels The third book does get very dark indeed. I don't think it crosses into horror, but it certainly becomes very dark. I waited for all three books, as is my way of reading, and read them back to back. They make for an absolutely fabulous series.

    Empire of the Wolf was such a great series! I really enjoyed it. I read the third installment and it definitely continues to deliver the intrigue and philosophical musing as you mentioned.

    I confused Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco for so long with Starling House and knew I probably wouldn't like SH so didn't pick up either. I finally figured out they were not the same book and read Throne of the Fallen. It is the best book i have read in over a year.

    The empire of the wolf series has been on my tbr list for a while but i might have to bump it up in priority. Been craving reading a fantasy series with an interesting necromantic magic system for a while. Also from what i heard it goes into lovecraftian horror later on which sounds interesting too.

    Hope this isn’t rude but do you ever post a video where you just answer questions? For example do you prefer stand-alones to series? If series, do you prefer duologies to trilogies or mega epics? Do you have an almost time favourite if each? Thank you 🙏

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  7 месяцев назад +2

      Oh, like a Q and A-I’ve not don’t one in a really long time. And no worries, not rude at all!
      As for the sample questions, I’m very indecisive about series vs standalones. I think if a series is amazing, then series win, but standalones have less pacing issues most of the time. So I guess my answer is that it depends 😅
      I might do a Q and A on Patreon some time, then maybe post the video here later. Not sure yet though :)

    I didn't really enjoy Starling House. I thought the characters weren't really interesting. You knew their personalities and then you knew who the good people were because they all aligned politically. It wasn't for me at least. It was very simple. But, also, I just wasn't entertained. it felt like work for me to read through

    Just finished Dark Star Burning Ash Falls White.. it felt so long but at the same time some stuff could have been more developped 😅 Also the ending was so rushed. 🥲 It could have been a trilogy or even a standalone with the right editing.
