I would lose my mind if I lived with 3 other people in an apartment that small. I pay $1,400 for my 3 bedroom house which includes 5 acres of open land for my gardening/farming.

How are things over there as someone that lives on the ground over there in NYC? Is it bad as we see through Cash's investigate reporting or is it somewhat overexaggerated? Just curious since I'm observing all of this from DC which has a similar but way minor problem.
Yeah, well, take some advice from an ex-New Yorker. I was evicted at the beginning of the pandemic when my job went bye-bye, but before the moratorium was in place. I was already living in an illegal apartment. I lived in my car for two months in the midst of the pandemic, so no showers at the gym, no bathroom, shelters? No way! I became nocturnal to keep my car and stay under the radar. Took cat naps by day in different places. I escaped by night on tertiary roads--remember when they were stopping people at state lines? The closest major city to me is now Quebec City but I’m in the USA. I’m a resident caretaker in a one room cabin at a rustic camp. I don’t pay rent; I maintain the premises, keep a register of hikers, canoers, hunters overnighting on the land, remotely monitor two wildlife cameras for a conservationist. Other than occasional tutoring, sewing repairs, making assorted crafts to sell in summer, I consider myself retired.
Thank you for sharing this, I would love to know more about how you came across something like this. NYC really isn't sustainable and I much prefer nature and simplicity. No need to provide exactly where you are, i dont want to invade your privacy. I would just like some info to point me in the direction of how i can find a similar situation. Thanks
An illustration in the exact opposite of feeling entitled and waiting for government handouts. Well done to you for persevering. May you be blessed and have much success and happiness. I think you are an inspiration.
Congratulations on your retirement, and also on the new nomadic way of life with really no permanent address as you have to rely on using the "camp" USPS mail system to receive and send mail as needed other than email.
I live in a boring Midwest city. That being said, I pay nine hundred and fifteen dollars a month for a mortgage on a big house built in the 1880s. I saw my rent getting increased every year and decided to work on my credit and save money. I worked at the local grocery store during the pandemic and paid my rent every month. My neighbors laughed at me because they were sitting home doing nothing and collecting more money than I was working through the pandemic. I got the last laugh because now they are paying MORE to rent the crappy apartment than I am for my mortgage. I am also now a manager at the grocery store and am saving up for a pool. 😂
@@clownpocketgreat point. Pools are ridiculously impractical to own when you do even a slight amount of research. I’d say it’s easier to find a lake to live near
It's not just NYC, it's the whole United States. My family and I live in a small town in southern Minnesota - population 2,000 including the cows and corn. My husband and I are retired. Unfortunately, we made some poor decisions with our money. Long story short, 3 years ago, our son, his wife and now our grandbaby and us bought a house together. All of us are owners. The kids have the entire upstairs 3 bedrooms and a bath. My husband and I have the downstairs bedroom, living room, dining room. We share a common kitchen and laundry/bathroom. We pay the utilities and 1/2 the mortgage. The kids pay the other 1/2 of the mortgage. This arrangement isn't for everyone, but it works for us. We paid $110,000 for the house. In the 3 years we've been here, rent/mortgage has gone up. Right now, our home is worth $350,000. Something needs to be done. As a nation, there are more homeless people than ever, the cost of living is astronomical and none of this is sustainable.
Just don’t come to Colorado. We are full, and you won’t find much here. Most open lands are protected so we are not going to build more houses/apartments for you.
One thing I have learned watching this channel is everything in New York City is so much more complicated, every solution has a downside, every problem is tenfold.
Economics 101: Supply and Demand. There are more people who want to live in NYC than there are places for those people to live. That means that the cost of property goes up. Can't afford NYC? Move to Jersey. Can't afford Jersey? Move to Mississippi.
nah moral of the story is that we as a whole should put more effort in actually holding our govt and those working in it accountable for doing their jobs properly. A lot of funding and time is wasted on poor management of resources and money laundering through pointless contracts that doesnt actually help the people
Facts! Reason being the government seeks to gain more power between parties (tenants and landlords) to eventually using each other's desires and self interest against themselves. Who wins? THE GOVERNMENT!
Have you looked? Best food, best museums, best nightlife, best style, best stores, incredible parks, every singer tours there, and on and on and on. It’s worth it if you’re rich. If you’re broke then no you shouldn’t go there obviously.
@@maverickbull1909Huge facts I work remotely and my company has quarterly meetings in Brooklyn. I love to visit NYC but I just can't imagine living there😂😂
@foreverdreamwithinadream6871 what good is it? It’s the greatest and most fun city in America. Great place to visit if you’re broke. Awesome place to live if you’re rich.
With people like Carlos Danger, Donald Trump, Coumo's, Eric Adams, Elliot Spitzer, etc coming out of that place why would any sane person want to live there!
That is what happens when the rich and powerful make decisions for the poor and powerless. They are so out of touch with reality, staggering doesn't even begin to describe it. The bureaucrats can't or refuse to separate their ideals from reality. What kinda politicians will ever say "I was wrong"? Nah, they run the ship into the beach, and just keep holding down the throttle until it explodes. *Well to be more specific, they leave some poor fellow holding the throttle at the last moment and they flee the ship like rats.
"each person is paying $1,600, which is not too bad." in Oklahoma you can rent a full fledged house with a bigger back yard for like $1,800 utilities and water included. So thats pretty bad.
Most of the housing landscape in America has moved beyond the 30% of gross monthly income. A good bit of the population is now rent-burdened. Housing costs have outpaced income growth.
That basement in the 3bed apt has no windows, therefore it can’t be a legal bedroom but the realtor is trying to sell it as a potential 4bed. Also relying on roommates to pay their share of rent is a nightmare waiting to happen.
The guy mentioned living in house with roommates you know, but the problem is you have no control over what happens to their portion of the rent if they were to lose thier job, not decide to pay, get sick, etc... Doesn't matter how well you "know" them, things happen. That's a huge issue when that's the only situation you can afford in the city.
Many landlords now contract with each roommate for their portion. So if one fails only one gets booted. The only issue is you may get a new roommate you don't know or want.
The rent for that apartment was $6495 a MONTH, which is just about $78,000 a year. That is absolutely insane! What if it was a family, not a roommate situation? And after that year the only thing you've got to show for paying ALL THAT MONEY is a new lease contract that is raising the rent. People are already working 2 or 3 jobs just to have a place to live, because most rental properties don't cover utilities. Not only is all of this unaffordable, but it's also extremely unreasonable !
@@JC-zl1lqIn Virginia you can rent a whole house for the price of that one bedroom and we have plenty of government jobs and stay at home jobs, plus the military bases always pay great for civilian contractors.

no stay, they voted for this dont bring NYs problems to surrounding red states. new yorkers bring their money and inflate housing prices/rendt everywhere they go.
A lot of people, just starting out in life, do that. Then too, many people don't like to live alone. When I was getting my doctorate, all my peers had roommates. Yes, roommates come with risks. But my peers generally tried to get roommates doing the same level graduate coursework to mitigate that risk.
I don't think anyone wants to live with roommates, but if you're just starting out in life, unless you're rich, it's pretty normal to get a room in a shared apartment or house. I can tell you from personal experience, the lack of privacy as well depending on others to do their part is a nightmare. I actually lost friends over it. I'm glad I got the experience though because now, the only roommates I will ever have again is my wife and kids.
You can buy clothing for the same price if your tastes run to luxury. Or you can buy a T-shirt at the dollar store. Or you can rent a cheaper apartment in Des Moines, Iowa.
To go where? 95% of America is being turned into New York by the Democrats. Moving to another branch isn't the solution when the tree is being poisoned.
Oh, heck, no! You all stay the h-e-dbl toothpicks where you are and effing fix this. They flee the Northeast for the Southeast and absolutely blow up property prices so locals can't afford a place to start a family; they move away instaed of building a local economy. Those who fled here do not build the local economy. And they sure are bossy. 'We' need this and 'we' need that and 'we' need to do this/that the way 'we' do it in NY or CT or RI or MA or wherever. Yet look at all the free assistance and protective rules and etc. So easy to see that free stuff in the city drives up the cost of everything. Bonus: they have no clue they do it to themselves.
I feel like there’s something obvious that isn’t being said which is that in the current economy, people cannot afford the cost of living even though they are working(!). It’s hardly a problem with “apartments” as much as it is a problem with universal rising costs despite universal stagnant wages. Implying that $1600 per month to have three roommates and potentially have to be the one that lives in the basement is good value is gaslighting and heartless
Tip for Nooo Yawkers : Last time I was in NYC, the Staten Island Ferry was free. They used to have the B&O Staten island Rapid Transit waaaaay long ago ( a kind of interurban ) don't know what they have now.
That 3 bedroom apartment is 6x the mortgage on my house (which, admittedly, is a modest house, but I have an actual house with acres of land). NYC sounds like it can't be worth the cost.
Only If your stupid rich can you live comfortably. And even then if I was rich I'd buy a beach house in California, instead of a clumped up "luxury" apartment for millions of dollars where that at least in California can get you a nice house.
This why I paid my rent when COVID was happening. People was listening to the government and not paying rent. That is why some people are nine and more months behind
Money doesn't grow on trees. Landlords have to pay for maintenance, taxes and fees ofc they will fight to maintain their property so its profitable. Knew immediately it was bs when I heard that. Sadly others drank the kool aid.
I worked and saved during Covid. Worked at a grocery store and paid my rent. We were short handed because most people just wanted to stay home and get paid. My upstairs neighbor bragged about making more than me. Guess what, I bought a house in 2022 and my mortgage for a 5 bedroom house is 915 dollars a month and the neighbor bragging still lives in the same apartment. 😂

I'm a senior and on the north side of Chicago too. I have 4 rooms in a middling neighborhood. My landlord is keeps raising the rent, and now wants me out in May and will raise the rent to $1500 a month. Mass immigration is making it worse especially since refugees are getting assistance and help getting housing... Americans are not.
New Yorkers gotta stay out of our paradise. There will be those listing too high of a price for what they're offering, then New Yorkers will come snatch it thinking it's cheap, and it will drive up the cost of rent here.

So the New York City rent stabiliation program goes behind on their payment of people's rent, the city administration should be brought before the court for failure to pay on a contract (lease) by the renter who has paid their share of the contract (lease). If the city of New York or any city forfeits, the federal government should terminate the rental of Manhattan Island and return it back to the original owners.

In California- I always paid rent on time for 4 years. Landlord game me “no fault eviction notice” and never provided relocation assistance, not even last month rent excuse. When I demanded to fulfill them their legal obligation, landlord further broke lease agreement which allowed me to have a roomate on lease. Landlord evicted my roommate and raised my rent to 5 times in 1 month. Then when I could not pay that much for 20 days, landlord filed an eviction case, had an expensive attorney and won damages, eviction and got awarded everything landlord asked. Myself, being suffering from severe public anxiety, had to present my case myself as no city or non profit helped me saying they are too overwhelmed with cases. I spoke to judge and felt like I was talking to a wall. The entire system cheated me out to streets. And now I have an eviction on my record and cannot rent elsewhere since I have irregular low income. This system is actively punishing being poor.
It is a horrible vicious cycle. Tenants cannot afford lawyers, we do not have assembly to establish lobbies. It’s a systemic, intrinsic set up for failure.

As a retired person I’m in a constant state of saving for possible future emergencies. It’s a sad statement, but my parents always saved the same amount they spent. It’s Depression era thought, but it works. When young I lived in the city. As time went on I moved to the burbs where I now own a home. Move to the burbs folks. It’s so, so affordable when compared to being in the middle of the city. It’s not “sexy” . But it’s affordable.
NYC resident here since birth. Besides the obvious reason that people simply can no longer afford to live here many are making the deliberate choice to break their leases and move away. They are deliberately not paying rent to save until they get evicted, all the while they are saving to use the money to move somewhere else. They aren't doing this to get over on anyone and I am reserving my judgments because they are simply doing this to escape the indentured servitude that is their reality here in NY. I eat one meal a day and spent almost 20 dollars at Mcdonalds the other day for just myself (one large chicken sandwich meal with a value menu mcdouble). It's nuts.
The Government needs to start building public housing again. Only this time with the new stuff and amenities. I don't understand how the govt got OUT of public housing, subsidized housing. Build NEW!
All of our resources are going towards people who aren't even citizens. I'm only second generation on one side and third on the other so it would be hypocritical of me to be against wide-spread legal immigration but New York did the equivalent of inviting 100 people over for dinner when we only have two pizzas to share. Our economy already had massive issues pre-2008 financial crisis (nevermind covid), this burden was one we literally couldn't shoulder. We are all going to be broke together now.

Sad but true. No museum, theatre, restaurant - whatever that city markets itself on - is worth the misery that living in NY has become. I fled years ago and for a while thought about going back but never ever. With technology the city will continue to lose population and stature. Charlotte is second to NY when it comes to banking and comes with a much more livable lifestyle. Other cities are learning how to compete with the Big Crapple. Really said. I was born in Manhattan and lived there much of my life. Only to see it whither on the vine - mostly at the hands of liberals like DiBlasio, Adams and the big one in Albany - Kathy Woke-Ill.
Why would anyone who's barely getting by choose to live in NYC? It's so insanely expensive there, and just about anyplace else except San Fracisco would be more affordable. I am sorry people are getting evicted, but the logical solution would be to leave.
NYC like the government at large has a lot of hard changes it needs to make. The problem is most people (especially the politicians) dont want to deal with the difficulty of making the changes. They'd rather slap bandaid on top of bandaid, but the wound just gets worse.
NYC is the direct result of voting in Democrats... You need to realize you get the policies you voted in... The fallout is real because their policies don't work..liberals are shattering cities globally

because its a liberal city. It seems like a pro; but ultimately people not paying for 8+ months en masse is the reason rent is so ridiculously high in the first place. "bandaid fixes" are the reason our cities are all 3rd world.
@@-.-Monsterno, it's not because of that. When I left the city in 1985, housing court was backed up for 2 years. It must be at least that unless things changed. NYC is clogged with bureaucracy so things move much slower than other parts of the country.
During Covid, the eviction moratorium was in place. Ppl were allowed to stop paying rent, and landlords couldn't evict them. Now that the moratoriums have ended, tenants across the country owe a bunch of back pay.
People didn't pay rent for years during Covid while their landlords were still on the hook for taxes, maintenance, HOA fees etc. Some were in a legit tough situation but others took total advantage of the situation and didn't pay their rent even thought they had the same income.
Everyone was being set up for this. Many needed the break so badly that there's no way they could be prepared for this. We also need to remember that 90% are not getting their health care or any other needs met in the first place.

H.R.A. (Department of Human Services) will pay a rent subsidy for people to pay (only) %30 percent of their income IF they have less than $375 after paying rent. ONE dollar over that $375 amount, and that assistance ends. Many of the people who receive this benefit are very tight fixed incomes, and instantly losing assistance and having to come up with and extra $1000+ for rent in near impossible. Also, the $375 dollar ammout has not changed in almost 10 years, while everything else has. And can we talk about how ridiculous it is to think someone can live on $375 per month after paying rent? There are many agencies here in New York that set people up to fail.

Thank God my sister and her husband are letting me stay with them until I get into affordable senior husing! I left Manhattan July 31st. Going way upstate where it's more affordable.
So many more people are having to exercising that option - God bless your sister and brother-in-law for their hospitality and God bless you for valuing your financial well-being over attachment to a city.
This is sickening. People renting apartments have worked and paid taxes. I lived in West San Jose, CA. Unfortunately dealt with rent rising until relocating.
Mom and Pop landlords still have bills and mortgages to pay. As a result, tenants can get away with not paying for 2-3 years without any impact, while landlords have to cover everything (heat, hot water) as the tenants live for free
If the 'Social Score' ever becomes a thing, defaulters with a bad score will have difficulty finding future employment, promotions, housing, etc. like is being reported in China.
Yep make up an excuse not to pay rent but still have the finances to drive a new leased bmw. Yea mom and pops are the cause of high rents😂 most mom and pops dont raise rents if they have good tenants and if you own a home with another unit being rented it is a job to maintain
It sent a bad message when people had their rent paid during COVID. Now that the program expired all those people are in a deep hole. Now, getting their rent paid is expected. Unfortunately, now many have no sense of responsibility, accountability, or integrity . You signed a contract, you are responsible, period.
You are wrong. Far and away, honest, fair, hard-working, bill-paying people make up the greatest percentage of renters and home owners. For some reason, you choose to focus your rage on the small percentage who don't honor their obligations. Maybe you should gain some self-awareness, and find out why.
Yeah, I’m on a Medicaid waiver because I’m permanently disabled and ill. I have never had an issue with my rent assistance arriving, and I have always paid my portion EARLY . . . . until just days ago, I found out the Medicaid waiver portion didn’t get paid for the first time. The landlord has been very nice about it so far since there’s never been an issue . . . but it was promised the check would get sent by the 5th, and now it’s the 9th. How is she gonna feel about that if the check still hasn’t arrived next week? When is she going to dip into my security deposit that I can’t afford to lose if I end up needing to move? When is she going to get mad? It’s like not a joke. I will have nowhere to go if they don’t start paying her. It’s really serious when I’m in a program and my Medicaid waiver falls behind. Yeah, let’s put someone like me who is ill and disabled with a service dog (and 24 hour aides on 12 hour split shifts) out on a street.

My husband and I have the downstairs bedroom, living room, dining room.

You're not at the mercy of the landlords. You are at the mercy of what other people are willing to pay. Supply is shrinking as room is made for illegal aliens and zoning laws keep capacity static, and somehow demand is staying high.
It is crazy that they are evicting people to house illegal aliens at the same time. New York was once a great city, I hope it can be so again in the future but not at this rate.

There are many bad apples in the tree. The city needs to be fair. Cannot stop eviction for years. Landlord has bills to pay as well.

I am so sorry, that sounds so horrible. I hope you're in a safe place now. Best wishes

It's nuts.

How are you able to go 8 months without paying rent? In my day, I would have been kicked-out within 45 days.

I hope everyone who clamored for the economy to be shutdown admires their contribution to this mess.

Mom and Pop landlords still have bills and mortgages to pay. As a result, tenants can get away with not paying for 2-3 years without any impact, while landlords have to cover everything (heat, hot water) as the tenants live for free

The landlord has been very nice about it so far since there’s never been an issue . . . but it was promised the check would get sent by the 5th, and now it’s the 9th.
