    Thank you! Problem: Gas ignites but shuts off after about 40 seconds. It worked fine just 2 weeks ago.
    I had already replaced the igniter, but that didn't help. Because of your video I learned about the ECO and thermostat connections. I reasoned that it might shut off if it thought the water was already hot enough.
    I unplugged the connectors going to the ECO and T-Stat units and reconnected them and it fixed my problem! I'm guessing there was some corrosion on the connectors.

    FYI! The brown wire with the thermal fuse was put back on wrong! The thermal fuse is supposed to be bent so it is over the burn chamber. You have it backwards. It's a safety feature incase flames come out of the burn chamber and produce too much heat, it will melt the thermal fuse and kill power.

    Very informative over all, but wonder is there a way to tell which is ECO and which is Thermostat as they came loose in my kit. I'm assuming that the ECO is the 180F and the Thermostat is the 140F cut off. I also noted that my brown wires on the Thermostat were backwards to the orientation you showed. I assume that it makes no difference since there seems to be no set orientation for either sensor. Am I assuming correctly?

    • @tonys4250

      The blade for the ECO is slightly larger then the one for the Thermostat. So the plug for the Thermostat will not fit the ECO.

    At 1:04 ' "Use a meter to check the fuse and replace if necessary". Presumably the meter shows an infinite resistance (open circuit) for a bad fuse, but it's so much clearer if you actually spell this out so we don't have to assume anything.

    • @youtubemakesmedothis7280
      @youtubemakesmedothis7280 8 лет назад

      Another possibility is zero resistance, a short circuit. Have to assume that this indicates a bad sensor as well.

    Thanks Bug Smacker! My Atwood RV water heater used to work on Electric and gas and now only works on gas. Do you know why? It is 12 years old and now the gas comes on and lites, but in 2 seconds goes out, lites again and goes out again, and then the red light comes on. I checked the ECO T'Stat and the flat lug on left switch ) broke off in the plastic connector (2 red wires). So I soldered it back on to the terminal of the switch and that worked. But when gas lites it still goes out. Another camper told me that I should blow out the soot from the burner. How do I do that? I used can of compressed air and blew down the gas tube and the heater began to work, but it has trouble each time it tries to start. Can you give me some advice? HI tina. I checked all the connections and before getting at it as shown by this video I turned it on and waited to see if it would perform properly and it did. The reason why it was'nt shutting off is I was not giving it enough time (in my mind) to heat the water in the tank. It shut off; no over heated water was being let out of the emergency pressure release and the water was hot. problem solved: patience.

      +juancarloslax I have had RV's that are located in different locations. Most newer ones are located by the water and waste indicators. Others have been on the lower bunk wall on the bottom bunk. There is most often a switch with a red light. When turned on the red light will illuminate until the water heater is on. I hope this helps!

    I found out today, the job is much more difficult when some previous BOZO flattens the tabs the hold these sensors in place. Not a good plan at all, they are a permanent part of the water heater frame.

    Uh...not every Atwood water heater has a "light" that turns on when there is a call for heat

    Checked my Atwood, there’s gas out and the electric noise come out but no start. Check the spark probe , sand it and put it back, looks like the distance between 2 probes is a little far, bend more and it start the gas. Another possible reason no ignition.

    Well, this video certainly was more helpful. Thank you for explaining this. I did something to my water heater which I , hmm, don't think should have done. Being a newbie, I went and turned on the switch for the hot water inside the bathroom, only for a moment out of curiosity. Then I heard a "small explosion". There was no water in the heater, so I have no idea what mistake I may have done. Your educated guess before I get this serviced? Yes, I wasn't feeling too brilliant that day. P.S. The trailer was using electric only.

    Funny how you skipped over the hellish nightmare about trying to get the tabs, the springs and the plastic support collar all under the tabs they’re supposed to go under

      Yeah I was noticing that. Wondering how to test sensors with multimeter.
