Spain needs 370,000 social housing units? What, build them? How about the 3 million vacant units that are in Spain? Let them rent or buy them at a reduced rate. Better than paying nothing like the squatters do.
And yes, Spanish don't tip because most of them are stingy.

During and after WW2 we had no choice of fats. 2oz of butter on ration per person per week! meat cooked with lard made wonderful dripping to spread on toast! Remember everything was limited! I didn't eat spam much but am still alive at 82! Enjoying the lifestyle in Lanzarote. Sadly no dripping but plenty of olive oil!
Radio.. Being only 82 you were born in 1942 I would doubt that you would remember the war... If you had said in the 50s and 60s more believable because I remember bread and dripping a staple diet for us in that time period living in Birmingham... Tony cuenca

The council is collecting lots of monies from taxes generated by airbnb and other short term housing license. I have a bad experienced in Fuerventura where the locals are served first even if they are behind us ( we are tourist ) , it is infuriating their bias behavior.
Johnson won his last election with 43.6% of the popular vote, while Corbyn lost it with a 32.1%, on a voter a 67.3% turnout of the electorate.
Starmer’s Labour have won the 2024 election with 34% of the popular vote on an estimated voter turnout of 60%, the lowest turnout since 2001.
There’s been no great shift left and things will change little, because the global economy dictates the limits of what any government can do and the UK’s monumental civil service, will dictate the rest…Keep Calm and Carry On. You’ll hardly notice the difference.

Social housing in Spain has always been ridden with corruption on every level.
Housing Crisis? More like price gouging (in some situations. ) i am technically homeless now, not because i am not working but because i have become the working and been priced out of the rental market. Paying 500 euros/month 2 years ago was tough enough on a English Teacher´s salary. When rent was raised to 800/month, i had to move; to my friend´s house because all rentals in Guadalajara rose in the same manner.
What is really a complete shame is the britons don,t still have in the xxi century an identification card..and have to wear a pasaport in the EU...ridicoulous!!
Starmer and Labour will need all the luck they can get. I give it 30 days at most until the Tory party and all their voters start screeching, "Look, look! Labour still hasn't fixed all the things we spent 14 years screwing up!" The UK is a disastrous mess and I doubt that's going to change for a very long time.

I lived in Los Angeles (USA) for many years, a city of almost 4 million in a region of 12 million. People said it was always at least 100,000 housing units short. The simple solution-building, was never possible because of NIMBY-ism plus administrative incompetence. Will Spain, or any number of other places, do better? I don't know, but I'm all ears.
When I was a kid I rarely ate an English breakfast. Instead we had kippers on toast, a much healthier meal. Sandwiches to school would sometimes be spam with a vegetable paste. Corned beef was also a popular cheap meat.

Lots of interesting points Stuart!...about immigration though: Most people coming to Europe are economic refugees - and I think, in 2024, we need to ask the EU pariiamentarians, and the National Govts: "what happened to the policy position of the 1990's that the best way to solve massive immigration is to spend money, resources, effort on working towards making the originating countries being more viable - places that these people would not want to leave.???...Looking at northern and central Africa at least, I reckon someone dropped the ball...
