    I've used grinders since back in the 1960's and the way you tied the end of that cord off with the slack is awsome. Never stop learning. I just redone all my cords.... Thanks for that little note.

    Make sure to unplug the grinder if you use his technique to remove wheel. I’ve seen new helpers accidentally start the grinder by pushing the button with their legs.

      It’s what we get some times with down hill welding. Crappy rod, burnin to cold, burnin too hot.. few different things cause bug holes. A bandaid is a “patch” or a Re-Cap.

    On rolling up the power cord on grinders. I used to wrap my cord around the body of my grinder but have decided it is bad practice because the wires inside the cord twist which makes the cord twisted and awkward. Roll them up in a figure 8 style (not all grinders have trigger handle like the one in the video) and be careful not to over tighten or twist the cord.

    Austin you should come up to Canada and do some pipeline. My pipeline instructors are from the US. 6010 down hand, 8010 hot and fill. then 8010 cap down hand.WE might get to play with the Bohler rod.

      You must be out of 488? They usually will have a down hand coarse once in a while . If you get a chance run some beads with 8010 . there are procedures out there that use 8010 for beads ( Gr.483 pipe and up) .I have a binder full of them . It is a faster freezing rod and will under cut your bottom 1/4 if you don't have the right travel speed . You do not want to have to much of key hole on the bottom . Don't long arc your bolher rod

      @@bakabaka2061 Pipeline welding is not for a lot of people . You have to work hard , have the talent , and the tenacity to be part of the pipeline welding group. When I've told people what we have to do to make our money they think pipe liners are nuts. Its part of the job. We are out side dogs not inside dogs . When I went to my first down hand welding school (73) Our class was point blank told that on average only 10% of the class will become pipeline welders in the end . Our class of guys were very commited 50% ended up pipe liners . and some were best in the business . I'm retired now 5 years and am starting to slowly sell off my welding gear out of Edmonton . I can't imagine using a 9 inch grinder all day long a 7 inch is heavy enough, around here 5 inch rat tails are common in fab work, light, gets into places. Loosening the wheel off the way you showed in the video I'm going to have to try that, it may not work with using regular grinding wheels that use the jam nut. With zip disks they've jammed up the nut to the point I've had to take another grinder with a zip disk to cut the nut off.

  • @snorttroll4379

    Hey Austin can you do more stuff about chasing drilling rigs? I have absolutely no welding experience.. But I'm going to start school for welding soon and I'm confused on the lifestyle of that life.. Or maybe I'm confused entirely on the pipeline stuff if I'm correct there's a difference between rig welding and pipeline correct? Can you do a in depth video on the two differences and similarities?

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  5 лет назад

      Ya i will def take note of that. Really the only difference in pipeline welding and rig welding is the type of work. Rig welding is any type of mobile welding. Using your truck and welder for any type of onsite welding. Then there’s welding on drilling rigs. That’s a career in itself. If a guy wanted to go that route.

    I know this is sponsored by Weiler, Austin - Weiler make great discs btw - but for anyone curious, give Pferd discs a go. Just go buy 1 pack of their general purpose grinding discs, give them a try. Report back. :-) Ohh Pferd do make a doosy of a disc.. If you're feeling slightly flush, try their really posh range - those will amaze.. :-)

  • @fittergrips2010
    @fittergrips2010 5 лет назад

    On bigger pipe heavier wall I used 5/32" thick disc never chipped ,very very seldom broke apart. A 1/8' width disc that doesn't bust up is great . Austin rolling up your grinder in your tight wraps is a bad Idea in 30 below further north . It will eventually crack up the cord and come off like a coil spring . figure 8 has less tendency to do that. You may try to replace that grinder cord with a 15 ft one . Buy a 15 ft extension cord cut off the female end . re wire the new cord and make a pig tail out of the female end . Life will be easier and again reason for the figure 8wrap up

    OK guys if you are having trouble with a wheel glazing over it is most likely to hard if a wheel does not fracture off it will not cut to cut very hard metals you need a wheel that fractures off easily the softer the wheel is the faster it will grind also the faster it will wear out so on every wheel there is a letter designation I believe the wheel in this video was a T at this point I can’t remember whether going further down the alphabet gets softer or harder when I buy grinding wheels I typically ask for the softest grinding wheel they have because I do not want to spend all day grinding I would rather buy more grinding wheels than spend more time grinding

    If you get to a point to were you can't bust the grinding wheel or wire wheel off because of the weather or dirt mud getting into the wheel threads you can start the grinder for a few seconds let it slow down and pop the button to lock the wheel and it will come off I do not recommend doing this offen because it's very hard on the lock mechanism but it will take the wheel off ever time

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  5 лет назад

      I'm not a pipeliner, however my first grinder was a Porter-Cable.
      It had the pwr switch on the side, and even without gloves, it wasn't very convinent to use.
      Also, because it was a basic on/off switch, if something happend (and I've had some close calls) I was S.O.L. .
      My new grinder is a DeWalt with a paddle, I don't work on any OSHA sites, but none the less it is a much safer and, really just a more convenient and comfortable set up.

    Why don't you use a cordless grinder?

  • @lynnhooley7608
    @lynnhooley7608 5 лет назад +1

    I don't like guards but I had a co-worker years ago almost gut
    Himself. You don't notice it in the field but I worked in a shop, everything was covered in dust from grinding wheels and the metal. Dust, fumes, fried eyes, but I still miss it

      Much less vibration from a flapper, or a flexible grinding disc (check out 3M greencorps grinding discs, amazing things) your hands and fingers will thank you years down the line. Sadly they're no good for grinding back a root pass.

    I can't wait until they can figure out how to keep mill scale from loading up on the disks. I'm not paying extra money for a disk just made to clean mill scale.

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  5 лет назад

      Hmm 🤔 I guess I don’t know what you mean by that. I never knew mill scale filled up the grinding disk..

      Idk about mill scale. But galvanized does that to the ones at work. Either way. Put wd40 on the disc. Keeps it from getting all gunked up. I do it all the time for galvinized
