To me key difference is not glorifying gretting high because your anxious, rather transparenly sharing the darkest corners you've been in, putting light to the dark side of addiction (Toms songs have not only touched on his struggles but he shares the myriad of negative behaviors its led to for him) A telling song from his non digital album Renegades is SAVE A LIFE, he says (to thise currently struggling) he knows life is very bleak right now and you can't seem to feel like you can survive the current angst and or face where your life is and what's been done, but all you need to do it stay (not k*** yourself to save a life), it way better when you here his song,but it just speaks of the transparency of true anxiety and depression and addiction,to me that's the difference, he stands on helping others out of that if he can,not glorify the high and use of Xanax (or ativan).

Good reaction. The messages are why I like Tom. I've never really been into rap because I didn't really know what the Rappers were actually saying, apart from big booty, I'm a gangster, or I'm a pimp. Tom has given me music with meaning, and he makes me think, and self reflect, and understand the system better so I can avoid the traps of society. HOG for life.

I like the song "Side Effects" which you have to play the album to hear it. It is right after "Sad Rappers." I think he is calling out the abuse of prescription medicines that some need to manage their issues when others use for a good time...usually leading to overdoses and addiction. At the same time, he is exposing...once again the music industry and big pharma using musicians as "drugs" that fans get addicted to and buy what they are selling as the fix to your problems.
So what happened was Shawn Mendes had a track about depression, and as Tom is excessive in his research he understands his own depression. When Shawn's song spoke things that were not true about depression he started questioning the track itself. That's when he found 14 ghostwriters on the track. If anyone of these writers had depression they would have called out the bs in the song, and it wouldn't pass QC, but because none did, they didn't know what to look for. If you see the kid in the headphones in the video ... doesn't he look like Shawn Mendes?
The real ones who suffer from mental health issues we can tell. Like he said it’s in their eyes you can just tell who’s suffering your demons can see theirs. Some people are too absorbed I guess but most of us can tell

The question is, ARE they helping people? I've never listened to that stuff, but if they're only talking about being in a bad way and not giving any message of hope, that's not helpful... unless it's helpful for people to stay in their hell and feel like they have company. The message coming from somebody who has found ways to cope is what's helpful. Tom isn't 'cured'. He just channeled his abnormal psyche into being a workaholic. I've seen him manic. I've seen him depressed. I've seen his anxiety, his sometime self-loathing and his perfectionism that comes from fear of never being good enough. I've seen him trying to balance the scales by doing good to make up for his sins that he thinks it would take 'a million crosses tall as buildings' to wipe out. He tries to face that stuff, but he can't seem to forgive himself or believe he can be forgiven. I know what I'm looking at. I worked at a mental hospital...18 years after I was a patient at the same place. I know a few million folks care about Tom as though he was family and it scares me that he'll reach his goals and still not be satisfied with HIMSELF. So I hope for him like I hope for everybody, that they can accept themselves, find coping strategies for their problems and have some inner peace.
Tom being the same REAL man in his music as he was in his livestreams on Facebook was what connected me to him. When someone is faking they repeat the same lie and it comes across flat, like reading from a cue card. Not the same as remembering the pain of spending days, weeks or months in complete darkness. I am 52. I have dealt with severe depression for over 30 years. Music has been more effective than any medication I have ever been prescribed. Since I discovered Tom and the HOG family 3 years ago my dark days aren't nearly as dark and I never feel like I am ALONE. HOG isn't just a fan base. Tom isn't just a rapper. He is proof that you can fight all your demons and be successful even when the battle will last a lifetime. He inspires me to keep fighting too and to encourage others to fight their own demons also. I doubt he ever intended to be "an inspiration" yet... There he goes being amazing at that too. I AM HOG UNTIL I DIE.
