- My first ever performance on the tabla; just four weeks after I started! This was performed at Saptak Music School on November 16, 2024.
A teental is a type of melodic cycle on tabla that is composed of multiples of sixteen beats. This usually is used as an accompaniment for another instrumentalist or dancer, but it can also be performed on its own, as I did.
Throughout my four lessons, I wrote this cycle along with my teacher, starting with the theme (at the beginning) and writing variations. Each segment is composed of the khuli (open; left and right hand together to make more open sounds) and the mudi (closed; right hand repeats what was just played - alone for a more detached sound). Then, the tihai, which is like a conclusion to the section, leading to the teental theka, which acts like an interlude, and then the piece closes with the teental tukra.
