Great documentary covering the often hidden anti black discrimination that has been rampant in Canada. I just had to teach someone about Africville as well as the enslaved african canadians in New france who were a key part of holding up the fur trade with their work as domestic slaves. I met many black Scotians growing up in Toronto who migrated and the squalor they have lived in is abysmal but not surprising. The Shelburne race riots to africville to the discrimination suits on going currently in NS illustrate a continuity of this grim reality. Great documentary.
It was a group of squatters who built shacks in the North end of Halifax, and was where Halifax's rat-infested city dump was, at no point did they own the land ever.
@@EastCoastTravel This is a lie. The residents of Africville were tax paying citizens who went out of their way to request proper services, documentation and treatment, but we're pushed to margins of the city due to racism and discrimination in housing, services and employment. The city and province would go out of their way to build prisons and a land fill in close proximity while denying requests for road repairs, health care and transit. Well known store owners and entrepreneurs from the community like Matilda Newman talk about this in long form, in particular about how dangerous the water quality was and how the neighborhood was constantly under a boil water advisory while other white neighborhoods had infrastructure. No amount of revisionist 4chan history can change that fact, especially not to someone who personally knows survivors and descendants of survivors.
Ok without sounding like discrimination.. you gotta understand that Halifax was rising as a tourist town. The city had future plans to beautify the surroundings, & improve the look of the city for future tourism to the colonial coastal communities Housing was promised as a thank you to the members of the last participants in helping build the railroads. When the last participants died , the houses ( in their minds ) didn't get passed on to the next of kin BUT was taken by the city. I'm not saying this was the proper thing to do ..but it was the sad thing that they did to get their hands on the land again. I seen the footage... houses were shacks , it was slummy. & it did look much prettier when the city cleaned it up. They were people. The city should 'f found a way to relocate them to another location but they didn't. These are the errors in our choices back then that certain people did make... I hope somehow we learn from these stories....
The people that have 'developed' and continue to 'develop' this city do not care about people or communities. They care about hoarding money and the valuable land that will ensure their wealth. This is an embarrassment for this province and apologies don't cover it, meaningful or not.

A very well done video, and the kind of history that really needs to be out there, but as seen by a few commenters, many would prefer kept hidden. Canada has a VERY racist past, not as bad as the US, but bad enough that we see it rearing its head again. In southern ontario, like in New Brunswick, freed blacks were given the worst land. In New Brunswick they were given land between Saint John and Fredericton that was unworkable, still is. That early settlement first moved to Saint John, and were treated SO badly in Canada that they ultimately boarded a ship and moved to Africville in Nova Scotia, then boarded another ship and went to africa, which none of them ever had seen. So for new brunswick, they were treated bad enough that they WENT to that 'dump' outside Halifax. Ironically if you went to neighbourhoods today and talked as if there were no 'collective community' some people would flip out. Take the area around where the American recycling company is exploding metal and killing people. And they aren't even black just poor. In southern ontario what is known as the 'breadbasket' of ontario is now mennonite, but it WAS all black people. They were given land but because they had no education, couldn't even write, then they were literally bilked off their land. Somebody would come with a form, and maybe a couple bucks, and be kicked off the land the same way the irish had been. Now, obviously thats not as bad as genocide and killing people, but that doesn't make it GOOD and its something people should know because while in some ways its better, here in New Brunsick the government just bypassed a court ruling and has given mininng companies to come onto ANY unregistered land and test for minerals without even TELLING the owner. And again, in that community in Saint John those people have largely been ignored for years until somebody actually DIED at that plant owned by that american billionaire who genuinely acts like a Mr. Burns caricature.

Although Africville had it’s problems, the people who lived there usually liked living there, even with the places problems, and you should probably provide better arguments.
@@rubydue I live rurally. There are LOTS of people who live in properties that city people with all their zoning laws would call a dump. I wonder how the news cycle would handle it if the government of Moncton went to the rural areas where they deemed people living in squalor and told them to get out and were going to bulldoze their houses.
@@toxicsniper79 Community and friendship is something you can't touch or see, you feel it, but you can take the sentiment of community and friendship with you. If that place was viable to make it a living space, why is it still uninhabited? It was the city dump, it stunk and was over run with rats! People deserve a clean and healthy place to raise their children. Too bad you don't see the dignity in that.
@@rubydue You misjudge me, instead of sending them elsewhere, the town could have built a new residential area on the same emplacement.

took their land? they were squatters they owned nothing
Nope didnt happen it was a squatter dump like north preston with gangs and sex trafficking just like today

When people like you started touring around in Africville relying on your pimps to keep your cash. Keep your cash while having handy rumors in your head to say about that too.

Nothing to do wit africa. Those are Autochthonous Americans
it was a dump with squatters, no one owned anything

I hope somehow we learn from these stories....
all we get now is this is woke revisionist history.

Burns caricature.
they should be thankful we saved them from the underground railroad, but africville was a litteral dump with thugs and criminals
