- Plumbing call out to one job that is as plumbers will of been asked to go and look at a lot, and it’s always hard to find the cause….. smelly drains!!
Sometimes you have to go through everything to find out what’s causing the smells, from rubbish in the waste fittings to water building up in the floor.

Hope you enjoy the video… the amount I’ve tines I’ve been to this type of job I’ve lost count..
Yet the customers be ‘oh is that all it was. How much?’ 😂
🤣🤣
nice to see this,we plumbers need a medal for service.every issue addressed and fixed in the end.good vid from a fellow plumber.
Thanks buddy
Nice job Mark, hope they never paid for installation when they purchased the machine as it looks like the delivery guys did that. You did what any self respecting plumber would do, nice job.
Thanks Kevin 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice one Mark, I get a lot of funny smells on my jobs but there mostly coming from me, keep up the great work mate
Hahaha brilliant Tom 🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Can we put hockey stick on tom
Ffs)))
Another proper job Mark. Its amazing how many dreadful waste pipe runs you see.
Indeed mate
an old plumber i worked with always said you dont need glue in the joint with pvc just on the outside haha he wasnt all there
Rather to much than too less😉👌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hi a lot of plumbers and drainers in Australia have to use coloured pvc primer which is red for the primer and glue which is blue so inspectors can see the joint has been glued. A lot of em tape the 2 bottles together along with a 400 mm long 40 or 50mm pvc pipe in the centre as a carry handle. Recently in a nearby suburb one of these glue units fell out of a tradies ute on a major intersection. Some bright spark called the police and said there was a bomb on the side of the road, well 4 hours later after traffic chaos and the bomb sqaud it was declared safe and Vic Pol got to do some free huffing.
That’s brilliant…. And to be honest a great way to see if joints have been glued👌🏼
I always like to run a wash mac after installing too. I don't charge extra for the time for a typical 40 deg. wash cycle, as long as they don't mind me putting my dust sheets, socks and undies in.🤣
Hahahahaa brilliant 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing love seeing a beko washing machine we have 2 they are the best make going
Always informative and interesting !
Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Top job Mark....... A good recommendation would be for them to get some concrete/sharp sand & cement benching or haunching in that gully so that any splashes or backing up doesnt soak into the soil and goes where it should.
Thanks mate, yes as said in the video it will be getting repoint/filled etc to make it all good again.
It’s completely soaked so letting it dry out as such for a while
@@MJTiffPlumbing doh.... missed that! Must pay more attention.....
Once again. The man is just brilliant at his work 👍
Thanks buddy 👍🏼🙌🏼
Good work sr good job
Thanks buddy 🙌🏼
Had a fun washing machine piping error myself about a year ago. Pipe was overflowing at the top.
So I go about cleaning the trap (completely gunked up) and the pipe appeared full too, but it was old (10+ years), so it could be anything.
Long story short, the entire drain pipe was sloped backwards and I ended up replacing about 10 meters of pipe, chiseling out a new hole in the wall. Took me two days sweating in cramped attic corners, because it had to be in the most impossible corner of my house......
👍🏼👍🏼
Good luck on smashing 20K 👏
Thanks Andy🙏🏼🙌🏼
Not for one moment trying to tell you how to do your job ,being in contracting for 50 years plumbers always told me don't put the washing machine waste into the kitchen sink u bend because you will always get waste water gergling back towards your sink and always the smell as well
Sometimes you’ve got to do what you need to in this job buddy…. As you well know
Lovely job mark 👌👌
Thanks buddy….🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏼
excellent video
Thanks mate 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I like the idea of adapting a plastic glove to cover the spigot. So simple...
Before that, I had only heard of people using condoms on them.
What😮😮😮🤣🤣
Why did you not put the expansion plastic clips on the radiator bracket.
A bit dangerous of whoever to put the plug socket that low down . Could get a water spillage into it . They should always be higher than a water source or further away from one
Thanks one for the electricians mate…. However it’s been like that for 20+ years so not really an issue 👍🏼
great content again mark 👍
Thanks Mike 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼…. We’ve all had the “Funny smell” phonecall🤣
Hi mate being a spark myself I find your videos interesting and easy to follow
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍🏼👍🏼
Keep up good work
Thanks Sam 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great video Mark ive had a dishwasher exactly the same the other week where they had a really long drain hose I was surprised it actually pumped it all that way . When i come home i sort my T out then watch your videos 🤣Awesome video mark keep up the good work and most importantly the videos. 👍
Thanks Wayne….. much appreciated 👍🏼👍🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hi Mark,
A fantastic film, and good detective work from you to identify the problem.
I’ve never heard of the washing machine trap called a hockey stick before, I’m always happy to learn, thank you.
Hope all went well with your holiday, you are supporting a good tan.
Have a great week, take care, thanks for the fantastic content as always, regards, Chris. 👍👍👍
Thanks as always Chris…. A few people have said they have never heard it called that… deffo an area thing I guess
Me neither. The bend up to external gas cabinet is a hockey stick as well.
Thanks for the video Mike. I just love your videos, and your work ethic - real world plumbing and some nice tips as well. There's as much chance of a snowball surviving in hell as me getting a plumber to investigate a "funny smell" where I live. Pity you're at the other end of the country!
Thanks mate… glad you enjoyed the content🙌🏼🙌🏼
Mark 😉
Thanks for the video. But can i ask Why did you put in a U bend trap on the washing machine waste pipe ? Instead of just connecting it straight into the main waste pipe using a T join ?? Thanks again, Chris
Great work again mate. If you didnt have the space would a anti-syphonic trap under the sink with the spigot do the job?
With the line As high as possible ofcourse
I wouldn’t see why not buddy 👍🏼👍🏼
Hiya , as always a fantastic insight into ur day , thank u , hope u don’t mind me adding also useto be a heating engineer / plumber for over 30 x years until I wrecked my back , ( “ as u do, 🤣 “ ) , so could instantly see the first rate level of pride and professionalism u undertake on each and every job, makes u stand out by always going that extra mile , as a side note useto be great fun when I needed to fit 50mm waste pipe at the back of the units, plus a nightmare when some plastic pipe manufacturers wouldn’t fit or some would simply break into pieces , apologises as before I forget I done a few snowmelt systems and were extremely enjoyable , imagine u would also really like that with all the UFH manifolds etc , thanks again , stay safe and have a great week
Thanks Gary…. Appreciate the comment 👍🏼👍🏼🙌🏼
Ur so welcome as it’s justly deserved , 👍
I've been there brother!
Plumber from Perth, Australia here. Liked and subscribed! Glad I found your channel! 🪠
Thanks mate and welcome aboard 👍🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Different plumbing over there. Looks like thin wall pvc. Then a tee on it back. A tubular trap on a cloths washer. All big no nos in the USA. Worst is the tee on it back. No direction of flow There’s a few other things that is not allowed to here
Flow on the tee can be seen buddy, as for the other stuff….. I’m sure there’s big no no’s that you do over there that we wouldn’t.. great to hear what other plumbing around the world is like
@@MJTiffPlumbing a snake can not determine direction of flow. I understand. From what I saw That it can be snaked from kitchen and snake will go in direction. Not being mean. Looking at it from a ease of repair and longevity view point. I was just surprised. At what I saw. And a for flow on tee. No. When it comes to snaking. It’s a crap shoot what direction snake goes. That is why there is combos and wyes
Always interesting how the same thing is done differently. Being from the UK and having worked in the US along with our plugs our plumbing generally works better when carried out correctly. You cannot even buy a Wye in a UK plumbers merchant .
I hate modern washers as far as testing is concerned. Many of them, in order to be efficient, base the amount of water on the weight of clothes. When it’s empty and you’re trying to test this means you can’t fill it without a bunch of clothes. I wish they’d put a test button in this case.
👍🏼👍🏼
He Needs holiday to recover from holiday🤣.
Glad to see you back brother. 🫶
I bloody do mate 🤣🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hope you had a great Holliday Mark 🤘😎🤘
Thanks Wayne, it was very nice mate 🙏🏼
Where did you go Mark? Looked nice when you showed a little snippet in last weeks vid
Went to Corfu…. Top of the island, place called Sidari
Never heard the term hockey stick before , must be a regional saying . 😁
Yep seems like it…. 👍🏼👍🏼
a washing machine line should be always independent should be done correctly in the first place great work mark enjoyed the video.
Key word here is “should”……. 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks buddy🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hi Mark, love watching your videos on a regular basis. As a plumber myself here in cornwall with my own business, I’m interested to know if you quoted or gave a rough estimate to sort the problems you did, or you just gave an invoice for parts and Labour at the end ? I tend to give a rough idea myself to avoid any shocks for the clients.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoy the content….
I give them a rough idea then go from there
job done! Properly ;-)
👍🏼👍🏼
6:00 “That damp watery smell…” - not like the dry water smell!!
Actually I moved house recently and when I unhooked the washing machine waste tube from the stand-pipe / u-bend the inside of the pipe was disgusting after only 7 years! Real thick brown smelly gunge like concentrated smelly socks - which in fact it is!
Have you never smelt dry water….. oohhh it’s nasty aswell🤣😉😉
I bet that machine exhaust water smelt bad. I swapped one out for a friend once with it being a long waste run uphill (obviously water goes uphill) and the smell overpowered me. I had to go to the garden for 10 mins so I did not bring up my breakfast
Do you always solvent weld the waste pipes into soil stacks mate, seen loads that use the rubber ones but I need to do mine and I am erring on the side of solvent weld cheers mate
Either or mate to be honest…. They both work fine
Shocking install of the air con unit on the wall
Good job it wasn’t me and has nowt to do with me then….. Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice tan mate!
Thanks mate 🤣😉
Barry Wood 😂
Great vid again MJ - did I miss something or did the black 45s you put in suddenly turn white??!!! Nice job - what shoddy lecky though with sparky/diy-er thinking you can wrap some twin and earth over the copper pipe - thankfully it's a cold feed but not a huge amount of pride in work unlike your stuff my friend!
Your not seeing things…. I did a quick switcharoo 🤣🤣
Nice one you must be good at Lego great stuff.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Funnily enough I’ve just built my grandsons Lego police car this weekend 👍🏼👍🏼
Anyone know why washing machine extensions come with the two different size ends?
Good question 🤔
Never knew untill now you called that trap a hockey stick it really should have been fitted at the start the water had to travel a long way before reaching the gulley
Yep…. I’ve always known it as a Hockey Stick…. Might be just a regional thing.
Yer should of gone in years ago
Hi, must confess always known then as a washing / dishwasher p trap standpipe , lol,
hi m8 i had same problem at my pad put hockey stick in re bore its own waste outside then teed into existing sink ,,but occasionally still getting a whiff any ideas
Could possibly be the trap in the stick running dry mate???
Will have,not will of!
Oh dear……….. DHC🤣🤣
can I ask, is there a sealed drain option , my drain for sink is in garage, its open like this one
Yes you can get a sealed one
@@MJTiffPlumbing ok, i will have a google, thank you.
Nice content as per bud👍🏻 is it a tour of Bristan?😂
Hahahahaa…. Thanks mate…
Now that would be some video🙈
Bristan if your watching I’m open to a walkaround🙌🏼🙌🏼
Top job mark you have probably saved the back end of the house from collapsing. Washing machine traps are the way to go them multi traps are the devils work, kitchen sink u bend gets blocked with fat and gunk and the water goes down the washing machine waste. They should be banned
Here's a top tip you may already know, some washing machines are a pain to get out so get an old broom handle cut it in half lift the front of the machine and slide them under, you can then roll the machine out without damaging the floor.
Nice little tip that mate…. Will be cutting up the garden broom tomorrow🤣🤣
I agree about the traps mate, I will admit to using the spiked traps but would always prefer a “hockey stick”
Good idea about the broom handle. Don't know how the mother-in-law will get home if I cut it up though.
Any chance you could show us an unedited video just to see how you record things. Also what editing software do you use? Brill content as always
Thanks Tim
To be fair my content is pretty much shot as is… maybe a few retakes if I fluff my words and feel like someone will pick up on it (some people really like to nit pick)
I record on a Go-Pro Hero9 & do EVERYTHING from my phone, edit using Premier Rush and upload straight to RUclips
@@MJTiffPlumbing thanks for the info and the reply. I always enjoy watching your uploads and every day is a schoolday
Hello sr l m plumber experience 10 year
Hey mate
well are you gonna help Pablo or not?
Hahahaha…. No one can help him🤣
U only have 1 voicemail message, Jesus i never get around to listening to my voicemail until my customer mention my inbox is full 😂
I listen to them straight away and reply back….. always look after your customers 😉
@@MJTiffPlumbing i believe that I'll believe anything 😂
Always get tramlines using one of those plastic cutters.
Didn't realize I was using my other tube account.
I switched to the Knipex cutter for 6months to see what it was like… that started tramlining so went back to these as I’ve never had an issue with them….. fresh blades is the key😉
Open them up reverse the blade that should help
You do little jobs like that on an hourly rate or just a price you want for the job? Just wondering as I work on new build residential construction sites and want to come away from it and do what you're doing.
Hey buddy….. usually a set price unless it’s a call out, then it’s a call out rate and hourly price
sub left doesnt anything cheers
Nope….. don’t understand a work of that🤣🤷🏼♂️
Madness they spent more time doing extensions rather than do it properly even drilling it out and having the washing machine hose extend out to the gully on its own would have been better 🤦♂️
Whoever did it in the first place certainly didn’t do it right.
You assume when a “tradesman” does a job they do it right…… we see it too much that some don’t
With the pipe that you put the washing machine outlet into, it looks as though you just put the outlet into it and left it? Is there not a risk of it overflowing when the washing machine drains at the end (i realise thats why its so long)? Could you have put a spigot into that pipe, 3/4 up then capped the top off to completely seal it? Im not having a pop,i just wondered if wahat you did was enough, and what im suggesting is overkill?
What was done was perfectly fine and worked a treat..👍🏼
