08:31 Green Screen poorly lit creates that noise. If you give the camera enough signal, that should not happen. Also your screen might be the wrong flavor of 'green' . Depending on the fabric dye, it'll absorb red and blue in varying amounts and that might cause that. That's why you light the crap out of it. I personally have a habit of throwing so much light at the green screen that I have to use ND filters indoors. Obviously that means you have to give the subject a lot of light too. But I do rarely get that kind of noise with a HPX 171, which is only FHD even, 3 sensor admittedly.
Green screen isn’t where you’ll see a difference between the codecs, it’s motion compression. Complex movement like water or drone work over wooded areas is where the All-I benefits are shown. Also it takes less processing power for your editing system to deal with, so big projects benefit from ALL-I.
Nice! I'm wondering, have you ever tried DaVinci Resolve for keying at all? With a super powerful tool like Nuke you probably have no need for its keying / compositing functions, but I'm curious about what you would think. I'm assuming you already have a version at your disposal, but if not get the free version just to test and compare. I was spending hours working on keying out GH5 10bit 4:2:2 footage with Premiere and After Effects, went into DaVinci and got a smooth key in just a few minutes. I shot the footage in v-logL which needs to be graded first. DaVinci's v-log to rec709 LUT + an RGB curve was magical. I'm still shocked sometimes with the image quality of the GH5.
Tony Rizzo yes. I have. Nuke and AE are much better. Resolve is great for color.
Would you still achieve the benefits of shooting 4K 10 bit if you encoded the raw footage to DNxHR or ProRes instead of EXR (which I'm very unfamiliar with)? I use a PC for editing at home and Mac at work, hence my curiosity about both formats. Thanks for the excellent videos.
If you are using Premiere, look up their "proxy" workflow. I recommend you import the original high end MP4 files from the GH5 through the media browser, then make proxies in either DNX or Prores. Once you are done editing, you can export only the clips that need green screen keying to the EXR format, or DPX, or if you are using AE, just use the original MP4 files.
EXR is not an editing format, it is a high end still image format only intended for VFX work. I would never recommend editing in EXR.
If you have a really fast new system, like a threadripper system, you might be able to edit the GH5 footage raw out of camera. But I still find it kinda slow.
Really good. Interesting. I would not have expected LongGOP to work so well. I should assume nothing.
Stephan, Thank you SO much for this... As a Corporate Videographer, I have always had to shoot infinite white and got that down pretty well. Now the requirements are shifting to chroma and I have been pulling my hair out... literally... over the horrendous sparkling around the hair. Realizing it's not just me makes me feel a little better considering I've put a tremendous amount of time and a bit of $$ into the studio trying to get the lighting right. Actually... seeing your quick setup I'm a bit embarrassed now! It appears now it's down to my keying efforts, which have left a LOT to be desired apparently. Trying to do this in Final Cut Pro with Primatte and/or Hawaiki has been a lesson in frustration! I appreciate your efforts!
Great work man ! I know that you spend a lot of time making those videos so I appreciate it !!
Hey man :)! I really loved this video, so extremely helpful. I was wondering if the GH5 still has the issue with the noise in the Red channel in 4K recording? ruclips.net/video/uXhn-5UILgk/видео.html They have done a few updates since this video, and I was wondering if this is still an issue or not. Thanks again for making the video man, really appreciate it!
Hello Stephan, I also use the gh5. Could you suggest a capture card and software for a Windows laptop for doing chroma key?
Great job, Stephan. I was pretty surprised to see Long GOP footage hold up so well against 4:2:2 10 bit I-frame. It was cool to see you dialing in the right light level for your green screen while viewing the waveform monitor. I have to get one of those dang lights. Nice. Keep up the great work.
Those cheap home depot led floor lamps bounced in to white foam core work just as well.
Thanks! Just put em on a dimmer. Good deal.
wow. This green screen on a whole new level...I didn't even know what Nuke is. 👍👍👍
is that an overwatch symbol?
Curious if a noise reduction tool like Neat Video would react differently between the 2 formats?
Good question... another video brews, lol. My guess is, I doubt it. There's really not that much difference. My gut tells you you'll start seeing a difference in busy areas with a lot of detail and camera movement, where the Log GOP starts getting a little blocky and has trouble holding up. Controlled GS stuff seems pretty legit both ways. Except that sparkly noise in the reds. That bugs me. Then again I've been working on a show with a Sony F55 lately, and the GH5 actually knocks its socks off in terms of noise profile.
Also try in 8bit
hoodaffairstv you can check out my earlier video to see my 8-bit tests. It’s not good for green screen.
Great vid thanks. Did you make any adjustments to the natural settings ?
I always turn the sharpness all the way off, on every profile, that's about it.
Thank you
This IS actually what I was waiting for. Thanks for getting around to doing the tests and making the video!
Thank you! I gotta test out neat video and see what that does.
VFX guy here, I do quite a bit of chroma keying. I'm currently torn between either getting a GH5 or an A7iii. Thoughts? I hardly see a7 cams doing green screen work here on youtube....
GH5 hands down. A7iii is still 4:2:0 8-bit
Stephan Fleet Excellent man, thanks for the feedback and keep up the great work; it's invaluable.
@@StephanFleet How about GH5/II vs Lumix S5? Long GOP 4:2:2 4k on S5 but would the full frame/more pixels sensor help or hinder? Cheers!
