I have been meditating on just this teaching, here expressed in a book on Taoist sorcery, giving three filters of right speech, to "build the energetic power of speech and not lose the power of words." The sorcerer is to ask themselves before speaking: "Is it necessary to say this, or should I remain silent", next "Is this truthful (authentic), and will it create energy in the direction of where I want it to go?", and finally. "Is this kind to the listener and will it help them heal and grow, or will it close their spirit and harden their heart." (Johnson, Daoist Magical Incantations, 2006). The virtue of words is a great mystery, totally misunderstood by the mass of people, yet it is a form of everyday magic, which is so ubiquitous as to go unseen and unnoticed by most, especially in this materialistic age. Words, vibrations of sound produced by the vocal chords, of written with symbolic squiggles of ink, and carrying meaning, which have the power to move the soul, and produce distinct and measurable behavioral and physiological changes in the human organism hearing or reading them, are the truest and most obvious example of a true "occult virtue", as someone of Agrippa's time would have put it. Many don't understand or choose not to believe in the power of their words to heal, to hurt and to shape reality at a basic level. Thank you for sharing this profound teaching.
