Action Force lore: "technology" briefs especially of Swarm tech and the workings of the Praetorians, character backgrounds, story/plot advancements, inspirations for some of the characters, etc.
I DEFINITELY wanna see a few more sitdowns with Aaron Archer. Certainly want to see more inside talk of Valaverse figures. I love that you're a collector, too, and i really love the videos where you talk about the history and production of lines, like the Dick Tracy video.
When we were kids we tricked a kid into thinking there was a Joe with a flame thrower called Blow J@b. He asked him mom for one for his birthday. He got grounded for a week and we weren’t allowed at their house anymore
A similar thing happened with episodes of Doctor Who. Some were recovered from skips before they could be destroyed. Some were labelled for destruction, and only survived purely because of laziness. Those episodes were discovered many years later, at the back of a cupboard, having been completely forgotten.
I was hard-core collecting GI Joe when this came out but, somehow, I totally missed it. All these years and I thought that Starduster was the only Action Stars figure mail-away...
Back in 1998 I attended a James DeSimone convention in North Attleboro, MA, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Marine Jungle Fighter set. One of the highlights of the convention was going to the Hasbro store at Hasbro HQ and also taking a tour of the Hasbro warehouse. While at the warehouse, we were told stories about Hasbro employees in the mid to late ‘70’s rescuing all kinds of Adventure Team merchandise, artwork samples and packaging samples from the trash. This was at the time that Hasbro was transitioning from the Adventure Team and Defenders to Super Joe. After watching your video, it gives credence to those stories. Cool video!
Typical corporate behavior. They don't care about the creatives. It isn't just that it was artwork being thrown away...the company PAID for that artwork. They paid the salary of the artist and paid for the materials and supplies used to make it. They were throwing away money.
Great story. Reminds me of the stacks of original comic pages by people like Kirby, Ditko etc being used for cutting mats and just being thrown out and not given back to the artist back in the day. All that history not archived for future generations to appreciate.
My first job out of college was an artist for a silk screen company. The guy who started that company used to be friends with John Byrne (yes, THAT John Byrne). I was able to salvage some old Byrne sketches that were getting thrown out...
By that logic you never own your car, you never own your couch or literally anything. Everything is created... work for hire is a requirement for markets to function. Awesome! It’s crazy to think that I always just imagined companies keeping archives of all their artwork, sculpts and toys in some vault and finding out that’s not the case at all. That is an amazing illustration. Very cool piece to own.
I use to work at a public library. Part of my job was to take books that had not been checked out in a while out of the system to be sold. More than once I came across some amazing history books that were worth some money but not millions and was able to take them home. There was a artist who I forget their name now that did illustrations of armor and weapons of the past really well in the 70's and 80's. I was able to get about 6 books of his. To think someone would just throw them away due to a cracked spine is beyond belief.
MAN, that's so hard to believe a company would do that, but thankfully, the work was saved! As a Transformers fan, do you know what pieces were saved? Definitely would like to hear more about this!
Definitely a crazy story! Can’t believe they would just throw the art out like that! Wonder how many other times that’s happened at companies, and how much art has been lost forever because of things like this! Glad to see/hear that employees saved what they could!
This reminds me of the stories Stan Lee would tell of the old days at Marvel where they would end up burning the original full page artwork for the comics to keep the offices warm to save money.
Back in the 80s I worked on Cabbage Patch dolls packaging for Coleco and the Batmobile box for Toy Biz. I had an opportunity to snag the art for those, but since they were a bit beat up after being manhandled by the camera department, and then by the proofing department, I passed on the opportunity. I did get my hands on some artwork for the Milton Bradley board game “Sweet Valley Mall”, fortunately my ex-wife stole that from me in the late 90s.
Someone in the Dark Forces Discord server set up a tool to scrub RUclips videos for mentions of the phrase 'Dark Forces,' one of the videos it pulled up was someone dumpster diving who came across a *pristine* big box copy of the game and just tossed it back like it was nothing.
Why wouldn’t they at least try to sell the art. Instead they decided to spit in the artists faces. Way to go Hasbro Keep making those beautiful decisions
I could be wrong, but I think I remember hearing Scott Neitlich (formally of Mattel) had some stories about some art and text being saved for the Masters of the Universe line from the 80s, but I could be wrong. I do know that he recently said that something that he had found a few years ago pertaining a lost storyline about the son of He-Man was recently lost again... presumably thrown away 😔. Why people think that this kind of stuff is trash just blows me away. In this day and age, they've got to know that there are people out there who would pay big time money for this kind of stuff. So sad.
Dumpster diving. When the Hollywood Video was going out near where I worked, I pulled a pick-up bed of vhs tapes and advert stuff out their dumpster. It was funny they didn't bother to try to sell any of it like they did the DVDs, games, etc.
It was a rather ridiculous concept to only try and sell one and not the other but it was probably due to space and timing constraints plus there was definitely a less robust market at that time.
Awesome story! I need to let you know about negative effects fluorescent lights can have on carpet since I’ve worked for a flooring company for over 30 years and seen them yellow carpet samples. Hopefully those lights are upgraded to LED,I’m not sure if they have the same effect but it’s worth looking into. Thanks so much for such an Awesome action figure line keep up the Great Work!
this makes me wonder and a little concerned as to the fate of kenner jurassic park and lost world art works and concept art, i know some has survived but there are some things i have never seen or heard about for figures i own.
In the mid to late 90’s my sister came home and said that they have GI Joe figures at a small chain of stores called MARCS here in Ohio and I called her a liar but headed up there quickly and here MARCS somehow bought out a bunch of Hasbro’s old mail away Flag Points redemption stuff and they had loads of things including mail away Whales in there brown boxes for $4.99 I bought all they had which was around 10-15 of them there also was of 3 figure sets “Arctic Commandos” those where $2.99 the most Quick Kicks I have ever seen those started at .99 cents but within a month they where 10/$1 and my Dad would buy a handful every time he went there and I think I still have probably 50 of them anyway there ended up being a few mail away Deep Six also a few Create a Cobra with there sticker staples to the outside of there baggies long story short I bought a ton of stuff not knowing a guy I know in the area some how got the word and cleaned out the other 4 Marc’s stores in the area..
What kind of content would you like to see in 2025?
The best if times , the blurst of times 🐒 🙈
More “finds” like this, and more about your time working at Hasbro (if it doesn’t make you too mad).

To be fair, Ditko did that himself to those pages of his. And Kirby and other artists never even cared about getting their art back.
One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. Same thing happened at Hasbro, artist didn’t care but others thought they should be saved.
My first job out of college was an artist for a silk screen company. The guy who started that company used to be friends with John Byrne (yes, THAT John Byrne). I was able to salvage some old Byrne sketches that were getting thrown out...
Very cool. We should always strive to protect history.
I mean, Hasbro is very good at doing Hasbro things
Hasbro gonna Hasbro, haters gonna hate.
TBH, it doesn't surprise me that there are people at Hasbro who would throw stuff like that away...because it's not for a "modern" audience.
This is why artists should own their art, and why Frazetta was right to demand it.

Hasbro is more than happy to throw away its entire toy manufacturing business.

What I would love for your take on was the Lanyard Toys The Corps! line from the 90s

What are you using as the base of your Detolfs in the hallway?
Dana needs to give you a 10 day contract already

Nice drawing and even nicer story!
They could have put that stuff up for auction and given the proceeds to charity... anything is better than tossing it in the trash.
