I'll give you a use case where 'air conduction' earbuds makes sense, just like how 'bone conduction' earbuds did. For listeners with tinnitus loud enough that they cannot wear in ear earbuds anymore, or those who even find classic earbuds can aggrave the tinnitus.

that's a valid point. That honestly didnt occur to me!
Air conduction also makes sense when you need low profile headphones but are allergic to most ear buds
