I find that often when class reductionists try to critique identity politics in leftism, they will cite examples of liberal identity politics. Like yeah, of course liberal identity politics can be pretty bad. But liberal idpol is very different to leftist idpol and I think it’s easier for class reductionists to point out the flaws in liberal identity politics rather than doing the hard work of examining their own biases and working to undo systems that uphold racism/sexism/homo/transphobia/ableism along with capitalism. Also those books you recommended sound v interesting I’ll check them out. Since the virus is mostly gone here things are starting to open up again and I might be able to go to an actual library to find them,, incredible. Have a good day, comrade
YES A MILLION PERCENT YOU NAILED IT. god that’s such a good way of concisely describing it, thank you !!! 💜 and if you can safely find the books, would def recommend :)
I know this comment is old lol, but could you maybe give an example of what liberal idpol looks like? i feel like your comment really had a lot of value, I just don't fully understand it yet 😅
Great video. I think more of the elitist 'Read Marx! Nothing else! Class reductionism is all that matters" type of people absolutely NEED to ask themselves: "What would Marx say about this if he were alive today?" I mean, I can't guarantee he'd care about these other issues - but given how the injustice of capitalism clearly irked him (plus as you've pointed out - class oppression so often ties into the oppression of marginalised people), I think he would personally. A LOT has happened since he wrote those old books. It's so counterproductive when people refuse to update theories - I really like Marx's work too, it's obviously important. I just also don't believe it should be the 'only' leftism worth advocating for. That's all nonsense. Also...I don't know if you've ever applied, but I think you should ask ThoughtSlime to platform you via The Eyeball zone. This is a great video that should have more views.
yes !!!! agreed ! & thank you so much, im honoured but I’ve never felt like im good enough to be eyeball-zoned? but ive been making more leftism related videos recently so,, perhaps someday...
i'm in my room watching all of your videos because you are amazing while my brother is in the other room making racist jokes sometimes i wonder how we are related...
i know you probably didnt mean it how i understood it, but "internalised racism" of white working class made me uncomfy - when u were describing how right wing politicians manipulate working class. in the 8th minute its not internalised racism if youre white - its just unconcious racism (internalised racism like internalised transphobia is when u are part of that group). im being very nitpicky though - i just dont want to absolve anyone of holding racist views - even if its unconcious.
thank you so much!! 💜💜 It's so rare to find a nuanced take on this complex issue. I find it so weird that most people are either completely for or completely against it were it clearly has so many importand layers, dimensions and yeah nuances !!
You can still have money and want to help others. If you are given money, it's not going to change your politics. You can want things for yourself and your family and still want to support marginalised communities. I don't agree with billionaires though. No one needs that much. People who rather put spare money into stocks and shares rather than give to charity cannot really care about others.
Something that annoys me when people talk about idpol is when they bring up stuff that has nothing to do with politics and act like it's a political issue. Like when people say "I voted Democrat because my uncle says the N-word a lot".
Hey Ashton! I love these videos and they’ve helped me become interested in more leftist literature/ideas! (The beginners guide was very helpful) and I love that you provide so many helpful links
Currently embroidering an Avatar The Last Airbender patch as I watch this, it’s actually for a sewing class so I decided to skip on the political patches for now lol
Okay. This has nothing to do with the topic of the video, but I just have to say that although your style is quite different from my own I absolutely love the way your hair looks in particular 😊 You really rock that hair style and it suits you very well 😉👍
I see all the different types of identity politics as important however I think that they are all undermined and encouraged by class conflict. The moment we deal with class conflict, society will be in a much better position to deal with gender, race, sexuality issues. Right now, the system we are under does not want to resolve any of those issues, they want those fires to keep burning so the left stays divided for as long as possible. We need to change the system to one that does want to fix these problems, but until we change the system these issues will remain. That does not mean we should stop fighting these fights, we should absolutely keep fighting for trans-rights, fighting against institutionalised racism, sexism etc... I just think that while we live under a system that wants the left divided along lines of race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality etc… dealing with that class conflict becomes more difficult because it’s more difficult for the left to unify. Until we change the system, we cannot effectively deal with any of these other issues.
My problem with the left is that we try to do everything all at once equally and not push for the important things and then make addendums later when we have the important core part manifested in law and federal policy.
Very well spoken, but please don’t say elite class. This is in fact an anti-Semitic dogwhistle, and is def not what you meant to say. Like I don’t think you meant it in an anti-semetic way.
Ahhh political correctness does nothing to actually advance the working class’s scocioeconomic status. It’s just performative hun :) A leftist who explains the downsides of PCness well is Slavoj Zizek, if you’re interested.

For the books you mentioned in this video (particularly the ones on race) - what are their titles and authors? Couldn't quite make it out :)
The New Jim Crow: mass incarceration in the era of colourblindness, by Michelle Alexander, and So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo!
