(933) Review: SouthOrd TPXS-07 and TPXS-08 Tubular Picks

  • Tubular locks can be a pain in the rear to open manually, but the TPXS-07 (7-pin) and TPXS-08 (8-pin) make quick work of them. These tubular picks are made of stainless steel and can open most 7 and 8 in less than a minute. They will pay for themselves on the very first job!

    Are all circular locks that insecure? Damn. Now I feel like my $200 bike lock is trash.

    • @FusionDeveloper
      @FusionDeveloper 8 лет назад +4

      I'm not going to reply to anyone else, but no, not all locks can be opened with this tool, especially if you have a 11 or 12 or 13 or higher amount of pins. Also, you can have a lock with security pins and alternating strength springs. This tool is made for cheap and old tubular locks with identical springs and no security pins.

    • @mattybombatty5119
      @mattybombatty5119 8 лет назад +9

      No. Other locks are more confident.

    • @schitlipz
      @schitlipz 7 лет назад +3

      Would one of those "disc" locks, with keys that have angles cut on them, and have no spring be better? You know, the ones found in the dollar stores.
      (That's not a gag question either. I've only seen one video, and that was on Bill's channel, where it took considerable time and a special tool.)
      The lock I've got does seem to have other features that I don't know what they're called. Like some kinda 3/4 of a circle steel cover to try and block picks I guess. And the cable seems pretty bad-ass.
      But like you said, I've got no sense so I'm not very sure what I bought. I admit when I don't know certain things.

    • @volunteerwork7761
      @volunteerwork7761 7 лет назад +2

      NOOOO, those locks use a much older design, I assume your $200 bike lock has varying spring tension meaning that this tool will not be able to open it. Single pin picking would be required and what you have on right now is what I would use.

    • @sellers8133
      @sellers8133 7 лет назад +3

      You can single pin pick with tthis tool. Just so anyone is aware you just pull all the picks up so they don't touch and push them down and pick each spring individually.

    I bought a set of 7-pin and 8-pin tubular picks from Southord years ago and they work fantastic. Took me a while to figure out how to use them because there was no video from Bill then. I removed the washer and reset the pins by pushing them all out past the end then zeroing them on a flat surface like a table.

    Wouldn't it be a better idea to immediately tighten the retainer when the tubular lock unlocks instead of pulling the pick out while the feelers are still free floating? I dont see how pulling it out before tightening would cause anything except an opportunity for a finger to move.

    Hello, Clock Cuber: I've purchased a few practice locks. I find learning how to dismantle a real lock and using that to be the next stage up from using practice locks. One needs additional tools to do this. You could start with this: - Professional 2 in 1 HUK Lock Disassembly Tool Locksmiths Tool Kit.‘
    Bosnianbill shows how to do all this in one of his videos. It involves taking out the fillings where the pins go, and then making a thread in the hole, where a small 'grub screw' is screwed into it. This makes it so you can put any different type of pins into your real practice lock. This, here, is where I'm at

    I understand this video is over two years old, but for the price of this tool is still killer. I hope you are still checking messages this far back. Will the 7 pin SouthOrd TPXS tubular pick work on a misaligned tubular lock? I have not been asked to work on one yet, but I’m starting to notice them while I’m out with the family. Thank you kindly for your input.

    Great videoI finally got mine to pop! I kept turning and screwed the tension ring tight, carefully without wiggling- but upon making a full turn the lock engaged again and the key pattern on the pic doesn’t seem to work. I noticed pin 1 hasn’t sprung all the way back up- it’s key position is 8 (pin all the way down/no cut on key) but this key doesn’t work a second time for some reason. I’ll keep trying. Should i spray some wd40 in there or is that a bad idea?

  • @Tedybear315

    How would this work out with a "programmable" barrel lock core? We use a series of lock cores with 8 numbers around the core, and a change "key" that we simply insert at the last programmed spot, and rotate to a new position/key. Old key is no longer valid, new key now works!
    With this pick, how would it be possible to "pick the lock"? Seems like it could either pick and open...or pick and enter the programming stage....Then you would just wind up rekeying the lock, and not picking it open.

    cant u use an 8 pin pick on a 7 pin lock , because alot of those locks are made to hold 8 pins but only have 7 in them , therefore making it work as though therre is just one pin missing, like they have some that will have 7 pins going one way short one at the tensioner spot , or short one the other way, lol kind of hard to explain...i dont come across these much

    I have.. in front of me, a 7 pin tubular lock on a cheap Hilka safe. I have the South Ord tubular lock picks and have had zero luck with this thing for over an hour!! I’m finding it a little hard to line up the tensioner to its correct point. It doesn’t have a notch or groove on the inner core, (just the outer). The key works it perfectly, but the South Ord pick doesn’t seem to be able to even engage the pins for impressioning. Any suggestions would be welcome 🙏

      I realize it's a 2 year old comment I'm replying to, but; yes. It shouldn't be a problem...
      The keys have that top notch, requiring the key to be inserted when the lock is at "zero." The pick only has the tensioner inside the tube. No top notch means you can insert it at any intermittent position.

    I like mine, even though they cost a fortune. I don't have the 10 pin one and I wish they would sell 12 and 13 pin ones, but there must be no "legitimate" reason to own those. They are a lot of fun. I have the de-coder too. I think you have made videos about higher security ones with different springs and spool pins and stuff in them, to complicate or defeat this tool (in addition to adding more pins (12 and 13) which there are no tools sold for.

  • @tripplehelix

      @joshn9069 8 лет назад +7

      Same reason why so many people buy masters.....

    • @FusionDeveloper
      @FusionDeveloper 8 лет назад +1

      Without an impressioning tool of some sort, manually picking, you have to completely pick the lock about 13 times to unlock and 13 more times to lock it. If you only pick it 1 or so times (partial rotation) then the owner won't be able to open the lock, without modifying his key or using and impressioner, so it makes manually picking them, a really bad idea.
      Also, they now can make these higher end with security pins an different strength springs and also make them with higher pin counts, like 12 and 13. Things that are made today, to security things use better security tubular locks or as i said, more pins which there are no tools for. These locks are used for cheap things and really old things back when the design was new.
