    Attaching the suffix "phobia" to a word suggest an irrational fear of that thing. There is nothing irrational about fearing a genocidal, warmongering and nuclear armed authoritarian regime. Russia has more then earned the fear and distrust of the Western countries. I say yes to Russian Arts. I say no to Russian foreign policy.

    Thank you for an excellently constructed and presented article. I can only relate my own experience but, here in the UK, people seldom talk about Russia, even given their present invasion of Ukraine. I would say that at the height of the cold war Russia was generally considered "the enemy" but, post Glasnost and Perestroika, relationships warmed considerably to the point where many began visiting Russia out of curiousity, and discovered the people were "just like us" and were generally friendly. Contrast this with today: talk show hosts openly encouraging nuclear strikes on London, Paris, Berlin, etc. Mass genocide. Could you imagine this kind of narrative being allowed to be broadcast on UK TV? It would be considered "hate speech". People I have met who might be considered Russophobic have a common characteristic; they're all from former eastern bloc countries. I wonder why that is?

  • @johncombo

    I have some news for You. Russophobia is not a propaganda phenomenon. Before the war I didn't have any views on Russia negative or positive (obviously a huge mistake), but now I absolutely despise everything Russian. The general publics pathetic tacit approval of the MadMan's atrocities makes them equally responsible as the MadMan himself. I just can't understand how people just are bystanders to the destruction of their children's future. It makes me sick. I know that many channels like this one, try to give the impression that the majority is against the war. There is absolutely no indications of that, on the contrary the large majority supports the war, as a minimum now it has been started, it can't be lost. And how many believe that Crimea is "ours"? Yes, Russophobia is a real thing! This may lead to some limited colateral damage, but nothing compared to the monstrous killings in Ukraine. The point of no return has been passed by the utterly pathetic Russian population who will be paying the cost of having done nothing for decades to come. Ceterum censeo Putinem esse delendam.

    • @alannolet3109
      @alannolet3109 9 месяцев назад

      There's no indication that the majority of Russians are against the war because Russian state media controls the narrative. It's mind control on a scale that's rarely seen in this world. If anyone tries to correct the narrative, they're imprisoned. Or they trip over a piece of rice and fall out a 16th story window to their death. Or they're exiled, like TV Rain. The average Russian hears only what Putin wants them to hear. Lies. Putin should be reviled. Those who spew his rhetoric should be reviled. But everyday Russians are clueless, they're pawns in Putin's game, they're lied to by state media, the only information they have access to. The lies they're fed would be laughable, were it not for the anti-western, anti-Ukrainian bullsh*t vitriol they're fed. But that bullshi*t is the only information they have access to. It's the only information they're fed. Everyday Russians are commodities to Putin. They're there to be manipulated and controlled. You indicate that the majority of Russians support the war. They can't not support it because the only information they're allowed to receive rationalizes it, and for the those that still don't support it, despite the indoctrination, there are repercussions. I'm sorry, but you're simply not paying attention, mate. You. Are. Wrong.

    • @mwgood523
      @mwgood523 9 месяцев назад +6

      It's better to understand that there are many Russians who don't support Putin's madness than to "despise everything Russian." Even those who bring you this news channel are Russian. It's worth waking up to the fact that not everything Russian is deplorable. There are many Russian citizens that are also victims of this war.

    • @itypograf
      @itypograf 9 месяцев назад

      Imagine yourself trapped in a room with a flat-earther who constantly spits his conspiracy at you. You didn't go to school to learn basic astronomy and geography. You don't have any other information source-just a window with a flat field up to the horizon and a flat-earther speaking nearby. What would you think about the world?
      Most Russians, sadly, never talked about politics and international tensions. They have no other information sources except for TV propaganda. Even if they could access the Internet, they don't know how and where to look for independent media because they weren't taught this at school and all of the independent sites and social networks are blocked in Russia.
      Well, I guess, it's easier to say "all Russians are responsible" but the truth is - there are no good or bad nations; there are good or bad people. And it is the same in the US, France, Russia and Ukraine. The moment you start judging a person by his nationality you're becoming a nazi. Don't do that, please. Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine are war criminals, Putin is a killer and a war criminal, and his oligarchs enabling his corrupt system are criminals. There is no denying that. But that's not all Russians. And no it's not true that the majority of Russians are pro-war, neither is true that the majority are against it. The truth is not that simple and sadly the majority just don't care and we have almost no way to get through to them. It is true, however, that we, Russians, will be paying for all that horror and destruction that Putin and his supporters caused and I have absolutely no problem with it. So, please, stop using the word "Rusophobia" and stop saying all Russians are bad-you only helping Putin that way.

      Clearly you don’t know how this war in Ukraine started and don’t know about the history of the region. My grandmother is from Kharkiv and lived in Crimea. I also have family from Sumy and Kyiv. Ukraine has always been a badly divided country, however, people tolerated each other up until the US backed the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s government in 2014. Crimea was annexed after this. Whilst Crimea was annexed for geopolitical reasons, the population supported it- there’s a good article written in Forbes.

    10 greatest harms to Russians in the past year:
    1. Forcing the most creative and productive Russians to emigrate. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused about 750,000 Russians to leave Russia, including some of the most creative and productive people. This is irreparable harm to Russian culture, and it is the result of Russian policy.
    2. The destruction of independent Russian journalism so that Russians cannot know the world around them. This, too, is Russian policy, and causes irreparable harm to Russian culture.
    3. General censorship and repression of freedom of speech in Russia. In Ukraine, you can say what you like in either Russian or Ukrainian. In Russia, you cannot.
    4. The attack on Russian culture by way of censoring schoolbooks, weakening Russian cultural institutions at home, and the destruction of museums and non-governmental organizations devoted to Russian history. All of those things are Russian policy.
    5. The perversion of the memory of the Great Fatherland war by fighting a war of aggression in 2014 and 2022, thereby depriving all future generations of Russians of that heritage. That is Russian policy. It has done great harm to Russian culture.
    6. The downgrading of Russian culture around the world, and the end of what used to be called "russkiy mir," the Russian world abroad. It used to be the case that there were many people who felt friendly to Russia and the Russian culture in Ukraine. That has been brought to an end by two Russian invasions. Those invasions were Russian state policy.
    7. The mass killing of Russian speakers in Ukraine. The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has killed more speakers of Russian than any other action by far.
    8. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to the mass death of Russian citizens fighting as soldiers in its war of aggression. Some 200,000 Russians are dead or maimed. This is, of course, simply Russian policy. It is Russian policy to send young Russians to die in Ukraine.
    9. War crimes, trauma, and guilt. This war means that a generation of young Russians, those who survive, will be involved in war crimes, and will be wrapped up in trauma and guilt for the rest of their lives. That is great harm to Russian culture.
    10. The sustained training or education of Russians to believe that genocide is normal. We see this in the president of Russia's repeated claims that Ukraine does not exist. We see this in genocidal fantasies on Russian state media. We see this in a year of state television reaching millions or tens of millions of Russian citizens every day. We see this when Russian state television presents Ukrainians as pigs. We see this when Russian state television presents Ukrainians as parasites. We see this when Russian state television presents Ukrainians as worms. We see this when Russian state television presents Ukrainians as Satanists or as ghouls. We see this when Russian state television proclaims that Ukrainian children should be drowned. We see this when Russian state television proclaims that Ukrainian houses should be burned with the people inside. We see this when people appear on Russian state television and say: "They should not exist at all. We should execute them by firing squad." We see this when someone appears on Russian state television and says "we will kill 1 million, we will kill 5 million, we can exterminate all of you," meaning all of the Ukrainians.

    Russophobia: strong dislike toward Russia and Russian things, especially the political system or customs of the former Soviet Union.
    Strong dislike,not fear, may describe what I often see in the US heartland....naturally people despise the Russian government for their actions....In New York area of Brighton Beach, the Russian restaurants business is down 50% due to anger towards Russia. The owners have been on TV multiple times begging for understanding since they are Russian immigrants from over 25 years ago.
    In my area, several formerly Russian people, now claim to be Ukrainian when asked. They work in the public retail and are tired of the looks received when they say they are from Russia. Almost universally, the Ukranian people I know now struggle to shift their language to Ukrainian......so you tell me.....what would you call this?

    During the Tsarist years much of the west weaved in and out of love, treaties, alliances with Russia as it suited each purpose or was forced by Russian behaviour. During the dark ages (The whole spectrum of Marxist/Stalinistic years) apart from the necessary war years once Stalin had worked out his first ally was to soon be his first enemy we, in the west embraced (no matter how temporarily) the USSR. It soon became apparent, there was no common enemy with the west that the USSR seemed to need the west as an enemy. Churchill saw this even during the years of the alliance. The US didn't wish to see it that - well not just yet at least. Then we have the tumult of the collapse of the USSR. We in the west just did not want to see there could be anything worse than the dark ages years - how foolish was that?
    For a couple of decades Russia became - well almost cuddly, it was struggling with all sorts of forces internally but to us outside there seemed the possibility of a bright candle to be seen amongst the gang activity and the land grands - again how foolish was that?
    Most of us want to say it's not necessarily Russia which has become our worst nightmare, or even the Russian people. It is for sure what the Russian people do and more often than not do not do (stand up to their leaders) which causes our radar to spin as it is what their leaders are doing in their name which is not just causing fear it is causing indignation, defiance, distrust and an attitude from the streets of the west - well if that's the way they want it that's the way we'll give it to them.
    The invasion of Ukraine 2014 was viewed with consternation by some (nowhere near enough though) and each invasion of anywhere since has caused in many a willingness to admit we may have to fight to stop this nonsense. Others, those who bought into the Russian blxnbs obfuscations/lies and victimhood see the west as the protagonist - they can't both be right, can they?
    No they cannot - I don't and never will buy into the Russian narrative, it survives on a heady mixture of fear, irrationalism, illogicality and good old fashioned Goebbels like propaganda.
    Russia is being judged by those willing to do something about it by their actions - not their words we've learned a long time ago they count for nothing.
    Pull Russian troops out of Ukraine and the whole mess changes somewhat and a chink of hope may well re-appear until Ruskiy Mir demands another tyrant and the cycle starts again and the light darkens and the whole Russian nightmare goes around once more.
    For Russia to change, Russians must change - not their politics, they are entitled to vote for whoever they think best serves them but their behaviour - I repeat, it's what Russian do not what they say which they will be judged upon, we've learned the hard way not one single word that comes from Russia has any sort of sincerity to it. Any government which can happily kill/imprison the millions a variety of Russian governments have done over the centuries and a population which finds it not just acceptable but maybe even admirable is not worthy of trust.
    I doubt too many of us hate you - we just don't trust you and we hate and fear your behaviour. Only Russians can change what Russian do the rest of the world can only just kill you in large numbers when you merely sleepwalk to letting your leaders order you to do their bidding.
    That's not Russophobia - that's just plain common sense.

    They are exaggerating the russophobia in us ordinary people, but the United States neoconservative manipulators are indeed powerfully russophobic - I have also seen terrible russophobia online, because people's emotions have been manipulated to hate all Russians instead of focusing condemnation for the invasion on the Kremlin. Yes, we have plenty crazy people in Russia and in the US and in the UK etc, and we all technically choose our governments, but we decent people, who care about all our fellow experiencers everywhere, are totally against the dishonest hateful geopolitical game they are all playing together. It's tragic that so many ignorant Ukrainians (and ignorant Russians) are being sacrificed to death and trauma for their families because all these governments are playing a game of chicken instead of talking - And I don't mean giving up what we hold most precious: we don't have to be appeasers - but we do desperately need some adult leaders.

    What does Russia expect? If they happily kill other Europeans then Russian representatives such as these artists should be grateful that no one is trying to harm them while abroad, let alone refuse their presence and work. In past wars foreign nationals were rounded up and incarcerated
