I see this happen often in my backyard. All I do I pick up the mantis and absolutely curbstomp it into smithereens. There is only one reason I bought a hummingbird feeder, and making it a bird trap aint one of em.
That bird's a goner. There's no way a hummingbird would survive after that. All the mantis is going to do is go out and eat another bird. That idiot caused two dead birds instead of one.
They can take on much bigger and more dangerous actually. Mantis is designed for killing. Barbed claws to grab things and hold em steady. Mandibles in mouth to tear flesh. And acid in mouth to eat away at muscle to make thing goey and easy to eat. They even kill huge tarantulas. The hummingbird is easy. Tiny and defenseless.

Why do people give him so much shit for this? Because he had felt bad that that hummingbird was to be eaten alive? He has emotions, he's human. I would have done the same. Mantis' are cool and all but I cant just stand here and watch this happen. It seems like you just cant please an animal activist on RUclips.
So what? The hummingbird was going to suffer a terrible death. They have a hard enough time surviving in a world of pesticides and poisons, insects always bounce back. If I saw it, I'd do the same thing. We interfere by existing. Even in the animal world natural interferences happen.
@@pamorama You're shockingly stupid. So it's better if the mantis starves? I mean, one animal is going to suffer. Why are you valuing a bird over a mantis?? What if the bird grabbed a mantis and tried to kill it? WOULD YOU CHEER?
I will disagree with you. I don't know how many women have referred to their vajayjays or womb as a flower. Have you ever heard a guy say, "she opened up like a flower"... Then guys ejaculated is often referred to as giving her my seed. So the human manufacturing plant is a girl's naughty bits... Can you argue with that?
You're arguing semantics and missing the point. Depriving a predator of it's food could be a death sentence, and we as humans should know better than to apply our biases towards cute and fluffy things to these kinds of interactions.
This just shows how strong praying mantises actually are. They do make great pets and love the company of humans once they get to know you, but in the stage that you are a stranger to them you gotta be careful about those arms! If you approach them threateningly they will not hesitate to grab hold of your finger and they will not let go. You’d be surprised at how firm their grip is. But thankfully, they do give you warning before they attack. You can tell this when they pull up their arms close to their chest defensively-this is when you should step away. They also have spikes on their arms so that when their “hands” close they stab you. However, I highly recommend making acquaintances with one because to see their personality come out is truly spectacular. Just be slow and patient with them.
They are so adorable. I always pick them up when I see one to move it out of harms way. I didn’t know they had an introduction phase. Fortunately, they’re always sweet to me they must sense my kindness lol😃
Why did he flick the mantis?? That mantis needs to eat too! Nature is about survival of the fittest. That mantis was smart enough to hunt near the feeding ground of hummingbirds. That was a well deserved meal. But it was taken away by a HUMAN.
My friend installed a hummingbird feeder in her yard. She called me over a day later to see it...well, we found 3 dead humming bird bodies on the ground. Only a tiny part of the hummers' breasts were eaten. 3 dead hummers, one day. It was a praying mantis - those things only eat a little bit of a hummer, and then goes for the next kill. If they saved their kill and at least ate the majority of hummer, it wouldn't have been so bad.
Because he set up a bird feeder for all the humming birds in the area that he obviously enjoys. The mantis came along to shit on the parade so he flicked it the fuck away.
That mantis gonna starve now. Expended a lot of energy trying to keep that bird down because he knew he had it, and would be good for a while. 🤣 Stupid bugs
Most likely the mantis would have been injurd or died from the fall as they cant survive massive drops and the bird would probably have a little cut so nothing nice
The hummingbird will suffer a similar amount of torture that a human would by getting eaten alive. A praying mantis wouldn't really suffer at all from being eaten alive. The amount of suffering the bird goes through is not necessary to feed this insect. It would be just as happy eating a cricket.
He’s already “interfering” by having a hummingbird feeder. This produces the scenario seen here, so he is essentially the “god” of this domain. He can interfere if he wants to.
Let’s just take a moment to thank god and nature that we are sixty times their size. Amen.

@@standunitedorfall1863 Nah can't agree with ya on that it was a green mantis sitting on a red bird feeder, birds can see in colour better than humans can that hummingbird had no excuse for repeatedly going towards the feeder with the strange green moving creature on it.
Is the birdy ok tho? I didn't know birds could whine like that and it hit me so hard to find that out just now.
it was not whimpering, it just sounds like that, it is actually how they sound normally, just in slow-mo.
Oh sure the hummingbird is fine, they are friends and the claws of the mantis totally didn't penetrate it's neck and it absolutely won't suck it's insides out.
If that hits you so hard, imagine a wolf mother tearing her cub to shreds because she has a bad day or just wants to be left alone. Happens.
Lions kill every single cub if they become the new alpha to make sure ONLY their genes are put forward.

What happened? I don't think the mantis would have let go.
He wouldn’t have. It would have killed it very slowly and then eaten as much as it could, I’m guessing.
They eat the brains most times.. sometimes decapitating it or even scalping the hummingbird. And he starts "feasting" all while the birds still alive. So sad but its the circle of life.
Haha this is obvious facts people. But i paused and i believe the bird flapped him off on the way down. Not sure tho. Its very hard to get those barbed legs off you once its got you tho.
I'm gonna be real with you chief, I'm not worried about a praying mantis "attack" lol. I'm 200 pounds.

If they saved their kill and at least ate the majority of hummer, it wouldn't have been so bad.
theres no such thing as the survival of the fittest.. the mantis has no brains, it just eats what it gets and it can eat plenty of other things...
Because he set up a bird feeder for all the humming birds in the area that he obviously enjoys. The mantis came along to shit on the parade so he flicked it the fuck away.
By that logic human was the fittest, so the fittest can do whatever the fuck he wants, nature...
Mantis can eat crickets or other insects. It wouldn't be able to eat entire bird either.
Gets flicked by human 1000x its strength on the back. *tanks it*
