We find that both detectors work equally in the wet sand. The only difference between the two is the Vanquish does not need to be switched to a different mode and change of sensitivity level like the Xterra needs. The Vanquish series detectors are not waterproof so we only go ankle deep. Xterra is fully waterproof, I've been hit by waves while using it with no issues.
