Michael was a war time Marine in which I’m sure he new how to use military strategy. Patience planning and execution, making your enemies think one way, allowing the perception of weakness. Remember Don Vito killed Don Fanucci. He plotted and tracked him like a hunter and did the deed. So it’s in the blood. So with that said, it’s not too far fetched to believe they both laid it out.

On paper it definitely sounds like Brando would be the better choice. But honestly Deniro brought an authenticity to the part and made it known to the audience why the Don was so feared and respected that I don’t think Marlon could. Deniro played the part as an up and coming pauper that was very believable when watching it and it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a movie. Other than the looks of Brando playing a younger version of himself I’m afraid he would have overacted.
@@demonicoymonstruoso I've been watching Brando since I was a kid and out of many truely great actors he is still the best. Acting came to him so easily that he didn't appreciate it and claimed anyone with training could do it. He was sincere but totally wrong.
Please do a video on Fredo... I feel he gets overlooked a lot. Yes he was the looser brother but he is also the one who had a huge impact on Michael. His death haunted Michael for years after.
No you're correct. The video fails to mention this, maybe it's an honest mistake. 'Joker' did in fact become only the second movie character to have won Oscars for 2 different actors. Marlon and Joaquin won Best Actor awards; De Niro and Ledger won Best Supporting Actor.
@@risavsahu4666 I think it's because it's not in the same franchise. I guess technically they won Oscars for the same character, but the Heath Ledger joker and Joaquin Pheonix Joker are completely different characters. So I really don't know I'm in between
It's kinda complicated but yes they are considered as different characters, since Arthur Fleck was an original character and Heath Ledger's joker was based on the comic book, and according to the comic there are three jokers from the main universe so we can't make sure were they playing the same joker or not
Nah they are different characters. While both are called Joker they exist in different universes. The Vito Corleone in Godfather 2 is the same Vito Corleone in Godfather 1. Phoenix and Ledger’s Jokers are NOT the same.
Correction: The video states that Marlon Brando & Robert DiNiro are the only actors to win Oscars for playing the same character. That was true, UNTIL Joachim Phoenix joined Heath Ledger for winning an Oscar for playing the character of 'The Joker'.
Technically true but that’s not the same thing , the joker is a comic book character while Vito even tho he’s fictional is grounded in reality. Also the joker while being the joker is not necessarily the same person.
Marlon created a legendary character in Part 1. And we are all blessed to have experienced it. I am happy and satisfied by that one iconic performance. Not at all upset that we were left wishing there was more.
Brando is the greatest actor, because of his unmatched acting range. From 1950-60 he played a paraplegic in THE MEN, Stanley Kowalski in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, a Mexican revolutionary in VIVA ZAPATA, Mark Anthony, a Hell's Angel, Terry Malloy in ON THE WATERFRONT, Napoleon in DESIREE, sang and danced in GUYS AND DOLLS, a Japanese man in TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, a contrite nazi in YOUNG LIONS then directed ONE EYED JACKS
Would have been awesome if Marlon Brando had accepted n acted in The Godfather II. His acting abilities n screen presents elevates the movie n actors to another level. Kudos for video. Looking forward to ur next one.
Deniro and Brando are not the only actors to win oscars for playing the same role. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Pheonix both won oscars for the representation of The Joker…
Both iconic performances and roles as Jokers, but Jack Nicholson for some reason gets little to no respect anymore when, let’s face it; he was the one who put the character on the map with the phenomenal insanity that has made him the huge name he is to this day. Just ask yourself, “Before The Dark Knight came out, who laid the foundation of what was the joker for pretty much all of us who grew up in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s?” Anytime you saw or thought of The Joker, what came to mind? A maniacal, tourtettes-like clown who was always smiling in a purple mafia suit & accompanying hat that was always cracking creepy, yet hilarious or cheesy one liners. To finish this off essay off, Jack was OUR Joker for 20 years with nobody bandwagonig the role. Sure enough Heath Ledger comes along and puts on an “edgy” performance in 2008, then dies shortly after and not even 12 years would go by without 4 or 5 guys playing the role. Am I putting any of those performances down? Not at all!! Not even one as bad as Leto doing the 90s Nicholas Cage impression. All I’m saying is, “Don’t you think it’s kind of coincidental that a legendary performance that wasn’t imitated for 2 decades has created a trend of actors now “Dreaming of landing that role.”
Nicholson and Ledger both drew heavily from Cesar Romero's iconic portrayal of that Clown of Crime. Cesar's performance was imitated, but never duplicated.
@@portugal5698 I don’t think anyone forgot Nicholson, as that movie was as big ad movie releases get. I mean, i was 10 or 12 when it came out and it was a massive blockbuster, back in the day when that actually meant something. I watched that movie with my kids during he pandemic and the role still holds up, and so does the movie. The third and fourth installments of that series were awful, hence people kind of bailing on that series in favor of the more recent reboot. Let’s not forget as well that Nicholson drew heavily on Caesar Remaro’s joker from the series in the 1960s and 70s, commenting on how much he admired his performance. So really, that is the role that’s been overlooked and forgotten.
Remember the scenes of DeNiro as young Vito, running and jumping around the New York rooftops, stalking his prey down on the street like a cat. Could you honestly see Brando doing that? A 49-year old Marlin Brando? Remember how thin and graceful, lean, taut & youthful DeNiro was, how it convinced you that time had been dialed back? The only thing dialed back about Brando doing it would be the nearest Dominos.
Hahaha!! Lol!! Very well said! But I think Brando "might've" been able to pull it off, but, as you said, not as masterfully as De Niro did due to the age differences between the two actors..
@@brinsonharris9816 I never thought it this way. I always had the opinion that though Brando might have pulled off young Vito in a convincing fashion dramatically, he still would've fallen short on channeling a sense of youthfulness like the OP mentioned. @@risavsahu4666 the Irishman comes to mind. Watchin a digitally enhanced "young" DeNiro movement compared to movies he made when he was young and graceful was hard to look past
Hey whoever you are Brando didn't need to memorize anything, the man was a genius. By far the greatest actor in cinema as Olivier was in the theatre. All Brando needed to do to give a perfect performance was to show up. That's why he was a genius, you think you can find a flaw in his performance in Apocalypse Now. if you do you're insane.
Throughout part one, Brando's lines were pinned to the chest of the opposite actor or placed nearby in such places as a desk or other pieces of furniture.
I remember on the DVD, Coppola said Brandon just didn't show up. I remember the actor Richard Castellano, who played Clemenza, didn't come back in GF2. As the story goes, Castellano's wife, who also was his agent, approached Coppola and asked for ridiculous demands. So they wrote him out of GF2, stating he had a heart attack( or drugs) and brought in Michael Gazzo who played Frankie Pentagelini. Gazzo would get a best-supporting actor nomination for his portrayal, along with Robert Dinero of the same movie. Dinero would go on to win the nomination.
I actually liked the scene without him, made the 'present time' Vito Corleone become a distant memory and Michael being unable to remember him as he had done things that his father would never do.
If Brando had reprised his role for the 2nd Godfather, the movie would have been the best in movie history. 'Gone With the Wind' would even match up second rate.!
The film did not need Brando. It did need Castellano (Clemenza). Especially considering the flashbacks of the young Clemenza & Vito juxtaposed with the the tension between the older Clemenza and Micheal. Should have paid him whatever he wanted.
@@boredoflife8703 lol much much weaker? Um no. Deniro was absolutely brilliant and Brando literally said he's beyond great and doesn't know if Deniro even realizes it when he played that part. He literally nailed a young Vito. They're different roles. How can you even compare them

The letter sounds like the same Francis Ford Coppola I have heard speak in the past. And since Coppola was a very young director at the time of the filming of The Godfather, what he says in the letter about “how much Brando taught him” makes tremendous sense as Brando (while only 47 himself) was much older and experienced in film making than Francis.
we're talking about one of my favorite film performances ever, but part II wouldn't have been one bit better w/ Brando in it. he did his job in the first film, which BTW, included dying. if he'd been a younger version of Vito, he would be in his late 30's,early 40's at best. making someone look old (tho the make-up man was ahead of his time w/ Brando)is easier than making them look younger, as there was no CGI. getting DeNiro only, worked really well. and 2 Oscars support me.
@@markbaldwin3233 thank you. the best thing is the 7 hour story they occasionally show on HBO, where the story gets it's chronological order. I love it when young Vito ''whacks" a guy w/ an oar, in Sicily.

Robert DeNiro was fantastic in Part Two. He was perfect. I just wished that the edited scenes of young Vito returning to Sicily and completing the vendetta would have been in the movie.
I remember the excuse for Brando's non-appearance when The Godfather Part II was released. The NY Daily News published that Brando felt insulted by Paramount President Frank Yablans, who mocked Shaheen Little Feather and Brando's refusal to accept the Oscar. Brando took out his anger on Paramount by promising to appear in the film and backing out at the last minute.
Brando was notorious for being difficult on set but he was an amazing actor, a director would need to weigh whether it was worth the risk to have him in their film.
Apparently, he was actually a pretty good coworker. Funny and upright. He was more of a pain to the Studios as he viewed them as exploitive. As a coworker; he stood up for Coppola and Pacino, as the studio threatened to fire them. He encouraged Reeves to seize the day in Superman. I guess it’s just a matter of perspective.
It's a good thing Brando is remembered for playing Vito Corleone and Colonel Kurtz. His career took A MAJOR HIT after he made the move THE MISSOURI BREAKS. He ,CERTAINLY, phoned in his role, and, BOY DOES IT SHOW!!!🤔🤔🤔✌✌✌✌

Could it work if De Niro had been put up enough make up to look like the aging Vito in the 1941 flashback even though De Niro and Pacino were about the same age?
I think it worked if we think about it. If Marlon Brando did make to the cameo, it would affect the storytelling by large amounts. In the flashback scene, when Vito enters the house, everyone goes and greets him or something, and we see the isolated Michael, away from the family. Maybe because he doesn't like that he has mafia for a family and he doesn't want any part of it. Or because he doesn't respect Vito that much at the time.

According to what I've read, Castellano refused to sign on for Part 2 because the producers wanted to dictate his weight for the movie, which led to several disagreements and ultimately he was cut out of the movie. The outrageous salary story I think applies to Robert Duvall when they asked him to re-sign for Part 3.

Marlon Brando received top billing in Apocalypse Now despite only appearing in the last fifteen minutes of the film. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if a hidden fact about his cameo at the end of Godfather II was that he would’ve been outraged to have been denied top billing. It makes sense for the first Godfather film as he was the titular character and even in Superman as his star power, along with Gene Hackman’s, was used to help promote a film where an unknown actor, Christopher Reeve, played the title role.

Yes, i would have liked to see Marlon in a reprise role in the GF II. At the very least, in the final dinner birthday scene. That would have been so very cool. I've watched these two films probably 8-9 times by now over the years, and every time i see that concluding scene i so wish that he could have appeared.

Please do a video on Fredo... I feel he gets overlooked a lot. Yes he was the looser brother but he is also the one who had a huge impact on Michael. His death haunted Michael for years after.
No to mention that fucking acting was primo.
IMO one of the most tragic characters of all time. John Cazale was amazing in that role.
Would love to see a video on him, very interesting character
In the end it was best to leave him off camera for his entrance to the surprise party. This way it shows Michael's true isolation.
Maybe I'm wrong, but both Heath Ledgar and Jaoquin Pheonix won Oscars for playing the Joker.....or are they considered different characters
So I really don't know I'm in between
It's kinda complicated but yes they are considered as different characters, since Arthur Fleck was an original character and Heath Ledger's joker was based on the comic book, and according to the comic there are three jokers from the main universe so we can't make sure were they playing the same joker or not
@@burdenofthesociety2023 No. They both played the Joker. The video is wrong.
Yeah but that's not the same thing honestly.
And now, Anita in West Side Story.
TeaHouse was crap
Would have been awesome if Marlon Brando had accepted n acted in The Godfather II. His acting abilities n screen presents elevates the movie n actors to another level.
Kudos for video. Looking forward to ur next one.
I've seen The Godfather II dozens, maybe hundreds of times, and still expects Brando to walk in on that final scene
@@portugal5698 Not Really
Nicholson and Ledger both drew heavily from Cesar Romero's iconic portrayal of that Clown of Crime. Cesar's performance was imitated, but never duplicated.
@@mehdimoueddene7642 Excellent answer…Lmao
I fell in love with him after watching A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Water Front. Just classic!
DeNiro actually learned his lines. Brando had to use cue cards. Brando was more trouble than he was worth w DeNiro involved.
@@brinsonharris9816 I never thought it this way. I always had the opinion that though Brando might have pulled off young Vito in a convincing fashion dramatically, he still would've fallen short on channeling a sense of youthfulness like the OP mentioned. You can be the greatest actor of all time but there are just some things you cannot 'recreate' if you've gone past a certain age. De Niro was perfect to play the little physical intricacies that only a young actor can convincingly pull off.
@@risavsahu4666 I get ya. Even w cue cards, he was still Vito Corleone, and some of the best scenes (he and Mike talking in the garden, for example) are flawlessly acted even w cue cards and you believe it’s a father and son talking. What I meant w more trouble was Brando refusing his Oscar, etc. as well as the physical part, and DeNiro actually spent time in Sicily to soak up the atmosphere. Brando didn’t have that kind of commitment.
What about the Island of Dr Moreau or that time he dressed as a transvestite for his western film? Brando's ego was always his downfall.
Best movie ever. Without seeing the deleted scene.
I always figured Vito was the one who planned it all along
Robert Dinero lol
I actually liked the scene without him, made the 'present time' Vito Corleone become a distant memory and Michael being unable to remember him as he had done things that his father would never do.
At the end at the flashback, Sonny's daughter's mocking his temper is a nice touch that is scarcely mentioned when folk talk about this flick.
This is a great video! Never knew many of the information on Brando.
It wasn’t about money . He demanded to have his girlfriend writing his dialogues
sorry, i find the performance of deniro in GF2 not as great as Marlon in GF1.

it's a tall order, especially since Brando provides DeNiro w/ the actual prototype.

I agree.. its easy to ride the DeNiro train thiugh.. I think it was sub-par.. even though he took up much of the screen... he seemed almost like a stand-in. Now on the other hand.. I fee Pacino nailed Michael.
Agreed. Marlon as the Don in GF1 was one of the smartest masterminds ever, while Robert De Niro's Don seemed kinda... uhm... dense?

I think it worked if we think about it. If Marlon Brando did make to the cameo, it would affect the storytelling by large amounts. In the flashback scene, when Vito enters the house, everyone goes and greets him or something, and we see the isolated Michael, away from the family.
