Andy Garcia's performance was just about the only thing consistently good in GFIII. And I thought the Vatican plot was very promising but clumsily executed because of the time constraints. The scene with Michael confessing to Fredo's murder is one of the very few scenes in III that's worthy of the originals.
Very well said. Anymore GF's wouldn't be successful since it's success really belongs to the 70's (GF3 was a disappointment in 1990). The novelty has worn off even if the films will always be remembered. They should have made a second prequel dealing with the events after the Fanuchi murder with RDN at the end of the 70's.
@Snaggle Toothed Have you actually read the original MPuzo book! The novels backstory tells of Vito's rise in the underworld after the Fanucci killing which isn't in the film. How he goes toe to toe and eventually defeats the other crime bosses, how Tom Hagen and Luca Brasi come into the family and Sonny making his bones. Thats the second prequel I was talking about! As for "being a different story to the one in the book" as you say GF2 (apart from the prequel backstory) has nothing to do with the book although MP did collaborate with FFF in making it. MP didn't want Fredo to be killed but relented when FFF told him " wait till mamma Corleone dies then we'll kill Fredo".
I liked Andy Garcia performance in godfather 3. Leonard DiCaprio just doesn’t work for me as young Sonny. Let The Godfather trilogy stay as is. Make a new movie!
I think he would be great but I'm a fan of the franchise and want it to stay where it is as the greatest two movies of all time with a bit of closure in the third.

No way Leo could be Sonny. Sonny was a man's man. The hairy chested tom selleck type. Everything about him was masculine and his temper was believable. Leo is not that at all. Not in looks. Not in temperament. Wouldn't have worked.
I think Leo gets overused and is often inexplicably miscast by really good directors. I mean, Howard Hughes? J. Edgar Hoover? Hard to think of an actor more wrong for those roles.
Godfather 1&2 10/10 masterpieces godfather 3 7/10 it wasn't bad but didn't met up to its standerds. But the godfather 3 was way better then recent gangster films like capone 2020, gotti 2018 and mob town 2019
GF 3 is (quite rightly) measured by the standards of the first two GF films and doesn't come close and is often dismissed but as a standalone film is actually very good. Remember it did pick up an oscar nomination for best picture even if it didn't win. Another reason for GF3 having a mediocre reputation is that Goodfellas was released in the same year, 1990, and was also nominated for best picture, and was a massive hit in the gangster genre which relegated GF3 to second place.

I loved all 3 equally. All gave me a different feeling due to time shifts. I felt like a family member watching everything by the time Michael died in the chair similar to his father in the end
I agree. I've NEVER understood the big distinction people try to make between 1&2 and then #3. ALL were epic and timeless. The typical storyline for part 4 would be Vincent ruling and then like his dad, doing something rash that causes a tragedy, possibly getting himself killed, then Michael's son taking over reluctantly just like his dad did before restoring order.
@@apacademy Its because the #3 is not by the books anymore and because Michael Corleone have 2 sons in the books and not 1 son, 1 daughter. We all know why she was included in the third movie..

I don't see Dicaprio capturing the hot headedness of Sonny. Even though he wasn't a real Sicilian I've known some hot headed Sicilians in my life and he acts it perfectly. He must have worked in a pizzeria as a kid 😂
I always wandered why they never mention Sonny's oldest sons Frank and Santino Jr in part three. It probably would have been a better storyline brother vs brother with one faction of the family supporting Frank and the other half behind Vincent. By rights Frank should be the boss and did they mention Connie's two sons they showed Sonny's twin daughters.

there is a lot of potential for a part 4 with new actors. Using beef between factions of the family like you said. Vincent vs the legitimate sons of Sonny. Please Hollywood...
mikedoesseo Ok, I’m not calling you a racist, so please don’t pull that card on me. But I have a couple things to say. You’re wrong when you say that Andy Garcia’s performance was only liked by the Cubans and Hispanics. He got plenty of praise from Americans, so I don’t where you’re getting your info. Also, I too have ITALIAN relatives who say that he pulled it off pretty well. Yes, you can sort of tell he’s Cuban, but he passes for an Italian. I’ve heard many say that his performance is the best thing about the movie.
IMO, GF III was doomed from the start. GF III looked and felt like a low-budget imitation of what it should have been. So many years had passed between the 1st two films, and with that, every person who either did or would have worked on GF III was so different stylistically, and the whole "feel" of film had changed so much, that it would have been impossible for Coppola to have re-created that special aura that the first two films had. Even the look of the film's grain that was part of the texture of the prior two films was totally different. Overall, GF III left me with a big "blah" feeling. For me, the best part of GF III was the final few minutes with the Michael flashbacks coupled with that excellent musical piece playing, then seeing him sitting there in that small chair back in Sicily, and slowly drop dead onto the ground. I just shook and teared up watching that. That was emotional excellence on film.
After watching Godfather III, an excellent successor to Michael would have been the last surviving member of the Corleone family, Connie. In Godfather III, by her behavior she showed that she had developed the cunning and ruthlessness that would have her an excellent successor to Michael.
I was enthusiastic when I heard about this in ‘98 or ‘99 but, even then, it was too late. Coppola should have done the third movie the way he wanted or told Paramount to fuck off. In absence of Francis, THE ONLY person that can hold a candle to his talent is Martin Scorsese. Not part 2 but, it would have been interesting to see him do part 3! The late ‘70’s early ’80’s, THAT is Martin’s time period! Although, this would have been great, I can’t imagine a world without GoodFellas!
I love how some guy making videos on his PC in his basement can say Coppola was “passed it.” The ego and lack of self awesomeness is apex douchbaggery…Fantastic.
He was kinda a complex character, Vincent was if possible even more aggressive n qualified than Sonny n the Robin Hood streak was interestingly mixed with an ice cold button man who can eliminate 2 guys, GET the information about who sent them, and rather than making him nervous he wants to give the Big Johnson to Jane Fonda's daughter lol. The elimination of the commission was kinda reaching but I suppose barely possible with a black helicopter or something lol, n the hit on Joey Sazza was too easy but the international stuff was very cool
People criticize Al Pacino's portrayal of Michael in the 3rd movie, but they are not considering how much time has passed since the 2nd movie. I think it is a fantastic example of paying attention to detail. When I was in my twenties, it was the 90s, and we videotaped a lot of stuff. My friend and I made movies with VHS camcorders, but we also filmed parties and sometimes just filmed when we were bored. The point is that I have seen a great deal of footage of myself from 25 years ago, and it's a lot like watching a different person at this point. My demeanor is different. The tone of my voice is different. My cadence is different. My posture is different. I'm calmer, and more humble, and empathetic than I used to be. I'm not special, this is what aging is. I think the differences in Michael are a pretty accurate depiction of maturity. When you are young, you are trying to fit the world into your narrative. When you get older, you try to fit yourself into the world's narrative, and when you are a little older than that, you just know who you are, and all that other shit just sort of evaporates.
I think there was nothing wrong with any of them. Making a part four without Al Pachino would not be something I would want to watch. But it would be interesting to see how Andy Garcia's part handles the family.
Godfather part 3 was like Season 8 of Game of Thrones The production was there but when you compare it to the best of the trilogy it doesn't hit the mark
As glad as I am that there isn't a Part IV, a part of me still wants to see it. if it had a split timeline because it was so good when implemented in Part II.

The biggest sin of GODFATHER III is the one most don’t consider, the sin of allowing sixteen years to pass before doing so. Especially when two years separated films I & II. Three years, sure! Four might be stretching it.
@@zeynsolo either way...there's a whole different story to be told...we have Vincent, then there's Tom Hagen...I'm sure Clemensa had kids...how about the offspring of Connie???...hell even Michael's grandchildren can further things along. ENDLESS
I agree with the end commentary. Sonny was a great side character, but the whole point of his story was that he’s too violent and simple minded to be an effective Don, and that is why Michael had to step in and take over. . His storyline would have no depth or intrigue, he would just scream at Tom Hagan, beat people up and order assassinations for 2 hours because the original film established that he could do nothing more than that . And Leonardo playing THAT role??? No way.
As much as Part III was a disaster, I certainly would be interested in watching a 4th if it is done correctly. However, what time frame are they going to use for the 4th? Anything more recent than the time the Rico laws impacted the mob in the 1980’s will not work nearly as well as prior to.
I think the drug trade story line would have been good even before RiCO you could get stiff sentences for drugs and the violence that goes with it would have been great
James Gray would be the director to tap. To my mind Gray is to Coppola, as DePalma is to Hitchcock. Bring in Darius Khondji to fill in for Gordon Willis on cinematography. And Dario Marianelli in Nino Rota's position as music composer. Set it in the 1930s with Joaquin Phoenix as Vitto.
I read somewhere that Ray Liotta was gonna be in it and as Vincent’s antagonist was gonna be real life drug lord Nicky Barnes and he was gonna be the played by...drumroll...Eddie Murphy. Murphy even said he would do a Godfather movie for free.
I don't think Hollywood will ever make another Godfather movie or anything like that . It seems like all they have made in recent years are Marvel/DC Movies . I'm amazed they're releasing a director's cut , albeit a limited release of The Godfather Part 3 with added scenes .
I swear years ago I heard that was the idea for Godfather 4. I don't remember if it was in the Trilogy Boxset Extras or a magazine article. I thought that was what Puzo started writing. Good call E

This may sound really bizarre but I would love to see this as a limited run comic book series. With a comic Coppola could pick his shot set up and the changes with the actors wouldn’t be a problem. That all being said I do think a godfather 4 could work in today’s world.
How interesting is Sonny? You have to be ducking with me? Unreal…For someone who presents their channel and content as a cinephile, sometimes I want to hold your head under water for just a while… You’ve read the book, Sonny is far more than someone who just gets angry and beats people up all the time. We can see that in Caan’s character on screen in the deleted scenes from the first film… You’re killing me Smalls…
An interesting book I read is called The Family Corleone by Ed Falco and introduces Tom’s character as well as the development of Sonny’s character. Set in 1933. Makes for a good read and, in my opinion, helps bridge part of the timeline between Part 2 and Part 1.

@Joe Roscoe Like the fact that in the Family Corleone Sonny witnesses Vito, Tessio and Clemenza murder Tom Hagens father when in the original MPuzo novel Tom's father is hardly mentioned at all (and his ultimate fate is not revealed) and Sonny instead witnesses Vito kill Fanucci which is the catalyst for him wanting to get involved in the mafia.
@Joe Roscoe Both murders in their respective novels are the catalyst for Sonny wanting to join the "family business". In both novels Sonny commits an armed robbery and when Vito tells Sonny off about it Sonny refers to him witnessing the Fanucci murder (in the original) and tom's fathers murder (in the prequel novel) which wouldn't make both murders taking place in the same book possible since they're basically the same event but with different revelations.
Nothing wrong with the continuation of the Godfather 4 let the generation of sonny, Alfredo, Michael, and let's not forget Tom kids grown up step in and continue the saga at full force..... This will be even bigger then the original godfather..... News generation kick ass.
I'd like to imagine that Vincent ends up in prison for links to Colombian cartels or some other reason, bringing the Corleone legacy to near bankruptcy. Forcing Anthony (who for obvious reasons changes the name Corleone to Andolini) rather reluctantly returns to conclude his father's wish, ultimately succeeding in legitimizing the Corleone family business.
I dont know how this would have worked out.Andy Garcia is a great actor ,he could have put a fresh look on this . DiCaprio is such a different type than Sonny, i cant see how that would have worked. I wonder if they were planning to use flasbacks to the other Godfather films? That might have helped. Its probably better that they decided not to do #4. To me, once Michael was dead there wasnt much of a story anymore.
Soy boy actors like DiCaprio, and really any leading man actor today (there’s no masculine ones), would be a disaster to play powerful roles like Godfather. He could do a SNL skit of The Godfather that would be good.
He’s a good actor and physically mature but my point was he doesn’t and cannot project traditional masculinity and power in traditional masculine roles. Not like Brando or DeNiro or any number of old school actors. When he’s cast like that, it’s a joke. He couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag in reality and it shows. But my words fall deaf on the young like you. They get it but they pretend not to get it. You understand I’m sure.
@@mikemccormick8115 have you watched the revenant Decaprio is as masculine as it gets in that He actually ate raw bison for that film. So no he ain't no soy boy
Those who don't appreciate why Part III was both necessary and on par with the first two films, don't understand it. Andy Garcia's Vincent kept the Godfather vital after no one thought there was anything left to say after Part II. His rise to the big chair was believable and complimented Pacino's Don Michael in every respect, and Sophia's Mary falling in love with Sonny's hot tempered son was a stroke of genius, worthy of another Puzo-Coppola collaboration.
I agree, but Sophia’s acting was atrocious. Also, Pacino’s diabetic attack performance was pretty bad as well. Other than that I think it’s underrated. The first two were just so good that they’re untouchable.
Just do it with Scorsese as long as the Five Families exist in New York City, the Outfit in Chicago and the rest there will always be a GODFATHER story ALWAYS, Luchese, Bonanno, Gambino, Colombo, Genovese. all still there Period.
The first could have ended on its own but the second felt open ended. Killing his brother, closing the door on his wife, did the family ever become legit, what became of Mike's son? Way too many questions for me to feel like a their wasn't necessary
After reading the book, The Godfathers Revenge, i have a feeling that would work as it gives everyones backstory and explains the end of a lot of plot ends and characters.
In a 1978 interview (that is here on RUclips] Eric Roberts said that he was offered a major part in The Godfather Part III that was to be directed by British director John Guillermin, who was set to direct the film because Coppola was busy with Apocalypse Now.
I agree that since they made a third, they may as well make a fourth. But I disagree with everything else you said. If Sonny isn't interesting to you, a fourth film is the opportunity to expand what could use some expanding. They're not pushing Michael to the side. Part III is already Michael's ending. Vincent's mafia war would be it's own story.
The Godfather trilogy is not just three movies about a crime/gangster family, it is mythology with appropriate hero and villains. Characters are archtypes and plot and storylines are consistant with myths of the Greeks and Romans with embellishments.
Very good critique. The Sonny storyline in the 1930s was touched on in the original novel. Sonny takes over the family after the Don is shot. Sonny's rule is marked by extreme violence and ruthlessness. It would have been a fascinating tale, but 1. in the book it is only about a 10 page narrative with not much flesh on it, and 2. Without James Caan playing Sonny, who would care what happens in that part of the saga? It's funny how Caan doesn't get enough credit for his perfomance. He brings The Godfather Part II to life in his single scene appearance. While Pacino and DeNiro are master actors, Brando and Caan have far more charisma and made the original so much fun to watch.
Part of me wants to see it but at the same time I glad it didn't happen. When Vincent succeeded Michael as Godfather the saga had pretty much gone full circle.
The third movie was a super piece in its own right, and Michael's daughter was represented accurately as a young Italian girl of the period and the culture, all this criticism about the actress need to be re-evaluated now because it was not judged fairly, and people continue to repeat the same old line of disappointment. Michael Corleone became older in the third movie, and people when they get older and if they are intelligent and sensitive change, and the film showed that atonement factor and the eventual death of Michael and alone and back to earth ... to nothingness.
"Godfather 4" would be a flop... Leave the trilogy alone. Godfather 3 was already a bit of a flop and '4, ' after so many years, would be an embarrassment.
Okay I’m not a HUGE fan of part 3 either, but I don’t agree that it should’ve been made earlier. When Michael gets old and we feel so sad for him, he keeps getting lonelier and lonelier, losing more and more people; that could NOT have been done with a younger Michael Corleone. Also the film isn’t that bad, we just feel like that because the first two are just too good. Sure the plot isn’t decent, but Michael’s character arc is EVERYTHING. And I’ve never felt as sad for a character as a I did for Michael in 3, I still want to get in the screen and and hug him 😭😭.
yeah, michael really didnt ask for that life. if sonny would have been a better don, mike doesnt have to get mixed up in the family business. he probably marries kay, lives a nice civilian life and fulfills his duties better as a father and a husband. mike's loyalty to his father, and sonny's failures are really what does him in.
They never should have made a second one! (1974) They never should have waited so long to do a third one! (1990) The thought of a fourth one being made, in a post-Covid world, begs the question "who is the target audience" ? The book was a best selling novel in 1969. The film was released in 1972. That's 51and 48 years ago respectively. The reason why "The Godfather One and Two" are known and loved has to do with reruns (sometimes back to back) during the holidays. Secondly, "Goodfellas" (1990) and "The Sopranos"(1999) (I know it's a series not a movie!) have changed the game.Since then we had "The Wire", "Sons of Anarchy", "Breaking Bad" and many others! Do you think that your average 18-34 year old movie watching audience has the patience to sit through that style of slow, dialogue heavy film making? I say they would rather watch an episode of "Narcos" or "Power" for storyline and character development.
I dunno, I kinda want to see it. I saw a good story buried in GFIII, it was just surrounded by a lot of junk. The central narrative of Michael finally making it as a legit businessman but the NY families wanting a piece of his new action is pretty compelling. As is the story of Sonny's bastard coming up in the streets, and Michael taking him in after his own son shows no interest in the family business. Some of the directing and cinematography was so so so good. Omg, that shot of Mike and Don Altobello in the limo with the shadows playing across the older man's face as his expressions change? Wow, that was some good shit. The architecture of some of the buildings they shot in was gorgeous. I don't think it was ever gonna be in the same league as GFI and GFII, but it had potential to be really good. The whole Corleone x Pope crossover event was dumb, as was the incest (wtf were they thinking?) I didn't mind Sofia's acting so much as I didn't like the writing or the character in general. I don't think Winona Ryder could have made that plot line play out any better. So with all of that said, I'd have given a fourth Godfather film a shot. I'd have had low expectations, but I would have paid to see it. I still would, as long as Coppola was attached. Don't even need to necessarily see Pacino at this point (though I know the studio would insist on it), but a Garcia return would be nice to see as an older Don Corleone with his kingdom crumbling around him. Someone younger to play young Sonny, DiCaprio is too old now of course. If we're being real though, I don't think we will see this happen now. The Offer looks like it might be very cool though. A show about the making of The Godfather seems interesting at the very least.
I just finished reading “The Family Corleone” by Ed Falco. It’s derived from the “Sonny” timeline from a rough script of the fourth movie. It’s a good story. It basically focuses on the relationship between Vito and Sonny. It also has the very brutal back story of Luca Brazi. Good book.
I've read the book and although it's very good as a standalone novel it's nowhere near as good as the original MP novel! Of the things I didn't like were the inconsistencies which don't fit in with the original story such as Sonny witnessing Tom Hagen's father getting murdered by Vito, Tessio and Clemenza whereas in MP's original GF Sonny's witnesses Fanucci's murder and Tom's real father is hardly mentioned.
People forget the part of Robert Evans ( Paramount prod) in the making of the first 2 Godfathers! He was out of the big seat by the time GodFather 3 (weakest one, Coppola got very big payday to do it. His daughter and Garcia weakest parts of film.) came out. Coppolla said there was no reason, other than money, to make the 3rd. Evans fought Paramount financiers Gulf & Western from every p.o.v. to get all his films made --> Love Story, RoseMary's Baby, Godfather 1&2, Chinatown........he made them fortunes !!!

Andy Garcia as Vincent was one of the highlights of Part 3 imo
mikedoesseo Ok, I’m not calling you a racist, so please don’t pull that card on me.
I can stop all this arguing back and forth by simply telling the truth. Andy Garcia was shit, plain and simple.
@@davidhunt6463 Congrats, very intellectually stated. Convinced us all.
The ear biting scene was stupid, his character was stupid , the whole movie part 3 basically sucked. Time to call it quits!
Andy Garcia was brilliant i love him
IMO, GF III was doomed from the start.
I'm all for a part 4 if Andy Garcia plays the Don. See how the family turned out after the tragic ending to part 3.
“Four movies in The Godfather Trilogy...”
I’ll let the OP figure out what’s wrong with his statement.
I would like to see a part 4 to this film 🎥 just to see how Andy Garcia's character Vincent would lead the family going into the 21st century.
Its like the same idea they had when they casted john Travolta as John Gotti. Never going to work.
The idea was a good finally a pretty truthful version of Gottis life and they completely blew it with the casting. Armand Asante is Gotti
I think there was nothing wrong with any of them. Making a part four without Al Pachino would not be something I would want to watch. But it would be interesting to see how Andy Garcia's part handles the family.

Right on for this statement.
The Godfather saga finished during the 70s...
No way.
Andy Garcia 100% all day long. He has that unique quality. Vincent.
As much as Part III was a disaster, I certainly would be interested in watching a 4th if it is done correctly. However, what time frame are they going to use for the 4th? Anything more recent than the time the Rico laws impacted the mob in the 1980’s will not work nearly as well as prior to.

Did you notice the inconsistencies in the Family Corleone?
@Joe Roscoe Like the fact that in the Family Corleone Sonny witnesses Vito, Tessio and Clemenza murder Tom Hagens father when in the original MPuzo novel Tom's father is hardly mentioned at all (and his ultimate fate is not revealed) and Sonny instead witnesses Vito kill Fanucci which is the catalyst for him wanting to get involved in the mafia.
@Joe Roscoe I didn't like that story because it's contradictory to the original novel.
Nothing wrong with the continuation of the
Godfather 4 let the generation of sonny, Alfredo, Michael, and let's not forget Tom kids grown up step in and continue the saga at full force..... This will be even bigger then the original godfather..... News generation kick ass.
What about Michaels son, the opera singer? That might be interesting! On the other hand “it’s not going to happen” is it ?
I'd like to imagine that Vincent ends up in prison for links to Colombian cartels or some other reason, bringing the Corleone legacy to near bankruptcy. Forcing Anthony (who for obvious reasons changes the name Corleone to Andolini) rather reluctantly returns to conclude his father's wish, ultimately succeeding in legitimizing the Corleone family business.
That was the original plan for part 4. Vincent gets killed or in prison for life

Stfu,, Leo is a great and mature actor,,, 24years has past since Titanic
Alin Luca I hope you understand that just screaming and yelling isn’t legendary acting.
I didn't like the third Godfather, but it COULD have been good with a different story focus. I'd be much less interested in a 4th entry in the saga.
After reading the book, The Godfathers Revenge, i have a feeling that would work as it gives everyones backstory and explains the end of a lot of plot ends and characters.
This concept would work great for a Netflix series.
Plus it's not Just myths, but also composites of actual people, places, and events. Hopefully a part 4 would continue that tradition.
Sonny is your storyline--a prequel. Agreed, DiCaprio is no Sonny.
A young Michael would be a better storyline
Not even close. Leo is too white bread to play a street Sicilian like Sonny.
Well, Leonardo DiCaprio is about Italian as you can get. 😬👍🏻
More Northern Italian rather than Southern Italian.
Part of me wants to see it but at the same time I glad it didn't happen. When Vincent succeeded Michael as Godfather the saga had pretty much gone full circle.
Would have loved to see that part 4 happen with Leo, DeNiro and Garcia. That could have been epic.
Leo would be great...and as an insider I can definitely say he will be involved in the new Coppola film....
Please don't...create something else...
They should do a 4th godfather in 2022 as the 50th godfather anniversary as the final!

They never should have waited so long to do a third one! (1990)
The thought of a fourth one being made, in a post-Covid world, begs the question "who is the target audience" ?
Let Leo play Fredo, that would be good

No NO NO NO NO!!!! Andy Garcia should continue with The Godfather
He should be someone's Godfather , but not of the Corleone Family!
No mentions to Diane Keaton or Talia Shire in the video?
I never heard of this book now I gotta get it thanks
Yes. I would loved to see a 4th
Its time to take the saga in a whole new direction! Make a comedy. "Bill and Ted meet The Godfather", box office gold.
They'll make it Godfather IV: Wokefather

Even if they did make Part 4, it would be jacked up with social justice themes and be unwatchable
Hollywood is done. Come with some new ideas.
Bring on a godfather 4. I'm eager for it. You got a lot of material to work with.
Why does everyone forget the movie and book "The Secillion" which Mario Puzo wrote and it dealt with indirectly with the Corleone family and starred Christopher Lambert.
