I'm currently working on the exact same thing. I'm good going down on the fretboard but up is a different story. Feels like the pick get stuck while sweeing up or something. Oh well, I'll get it soon.
You can play the scale any way you want. There is almost never "only" one way to do anything on guitar. That said, some ways are easier/faster to learn and speed up your progress more than others. That is what I show in the video :)

Economy picking, but counting the sweeping as one upstroke
