You can get a Stens 705-020 Carburetor Pressure Gauge for about one-half price of the Walbro. It seems to be identical. I have used many Stens parts over the years with no problem.
I have a Mityvac elite that allows you to pressurize and vacuum, works great for pressure testing these small carbs and I can also use it for many other tests.
Donyboy says, floor it Scotty. Scotty says, but Captain, she can't take the pressure, we've already lost the needle valve, and were now dumping raw fuel into the engines, she's blowing smoke worse then crackatoa! Donyboy says, oh thats what that vibration was that spilled my coffee. Great video Don, you know I love tools that help make my life easier in the shop, and I agree, this is a must have tool.
Great video Don, love these things! Definitely saves time by pressure testing that needle valve and verifying it seals instead of reassembling and finding out later. I've found that anything more than 5psi most needle valves leak. And sometimes if you don't get a good seal, try wetting the needle valve tip/seat to simulate fuel being in there, as sometimes they leak when the needle tip is dry!

I appreciate you mentioning OEM vs "offshore". I, for one, have enough trouble keeping my saws in top shape with good quality replacement parts. The variables that come from"offshore" makes doing repairs so much harder.
This was absolutely one of the best things I had purchased last year. I realize putting some fresh line on a carburetor and breathing and sucking was not a good way to test a carburetor. I love that dunking technique I'm going to try that out a little later today when my garage cools off a little. Good video and great advice. Also last year Amazon had these on their website under the same name. I had clicked on it to save it for later and a week later the company sent me an email and offered to give me a discount if I was to purchase that day. It was too good of a deal to pass up so that's why I pulled the trigger and picked it up. Been a great help I do more four-stroke and two-stroke and with some of those lawn mower carburetors you've really really need to check the float before putting it back together.

Nice little tool. I’ve got a mity vac with pressure and vac that i use. A little bulkier, but a nice multi purpose tool for this and many other uses. I use it a lot on sea food carbs to verify pop off pressure.

Another handy tool is a compression tester, handy for keeping an eye on the valve sealing and piston rings. It's much the same as the carb tester but higher values.
Yes you will spend a little bit of money but think of the time you will save deciphering whether that carb is leaking or not . If you save time you make money ! Also most precession gaging is relatively pricey!
Dony, I have a question. In testing crankshaft seals and the impulse line on a Stihl 038, how much vacuum should I apply and how long should it hold that vacuum? I could also teat with pressure, using the same Mitry Vac vacuum/pressure gauge. Thanks. Lew

It's odd that Walbro produces a tool specifically to test carbs and they specified a gauge that goes up to 60psi when you only need it to go up to around 10psi. I realize it isn't critical to pump exactly 5 or 7psi but if you make a tool is used specifically for carbs, a gauge that went to 10psi would be my preference. Thanks for the video.
UPDATE- I just found a Stens 750-215 that uses a more appropriate gauge that goes from 0-15 psi, with 7.5psi at twelve o'clock. Anf fyi- dial gauges are calibrated at the center of their range so if you're looking for easy to read and super accurate, this is the model. Cheers.
great tool. however i prefer the mightyvac as it will do both pressure or vacuum. and don't to check that your adapter hoses aren't leaking. been there. oops.
Walbro recommends that the needle is wet with gas before you test it. I usually put a little gas in the carb before I test it. I built a husky 372 kit saw a few months ago and I had the H and L jets so turned in that I knew something was wrong with the carb. I pulled it and pressure tested it. It would not hold pressure, so I replaced the needle and both diaphragms. It held pressure, then and worked OK in my 372. I have replaced that carb with a Husqvarna 372 carb, now, and it works much better than the Chinese carb 503281805 Husky part number.
@@sundial6919 that’s my guess. Put an HD 12b on it and start out at one turn out on both jets and the idle just cracked open. I would pressure check that carb and check the lifter height. It should be slightly below the top of the carb body. If you have an Walbro W, set it on the HD setting. I have only had good luck with one Farmertec carb. Most of mine have oem carbs on them.

@@sundial6919 hi, I never touch the jets. The needle has to hold pressure. The pop off pressure varies with the carb but is 15-50 pounds, according to Walbro folks. I just connect my Might Vac to the fuel line, in, and pressurize it to 7#. That is the standard pressure in the fuel lines, so that is what I test it to. It better hold pressure and vacuum or it gets placed. If it leaks I spray a soapy water solution on the carb to see f it is a leak from one of the gaskets? Small leaks are generally a gasket and big leaks the needle. Watch the Walbro video on carb repairs. If the needle is leaking the engine will run super rich. If it is a vacuum leak the whole system will run lean, if it will run, at all. That’s how I troubleshoot these two conditions.

With a lot of small power equipment going electric, do you see those repairs coming in? Also how do you forsee the future of small engine repair, and the tools needed for electric repair. It would be a shame for someone new coming into the trade to buy a lot of gas powered tools when the future is electric power.

You can't over pressurize the carb. It just opens the needle and it's called the pop off pressure and it's important to actually test what that pressure is to make sure the spring isnt too strong or weak.
What is the chance you can get Walbro pressure vacuum tester gauge ??? I would use one if at all possible. Talk to Walbro and put in a good word Donyboy73
On these small carbs,, the needle is held closed (pushed against its seat) by a spring. So it's always closed unless pressure is aplied on the needle lever to lift the needle up - wich is what Don does towards the end of the video. In normal operation that opening operation is provided by the diaphragm that sits over that side of the carb.
Does anyone know what the air pump is specifically called? I have plenty of gauges so I don't need the whole kit. I could just use a bike air pump but you can't fit that in your pocket.
Great item, but for that price it should come with everything to be able to use it out of the box.... The cheaper ones on Amazon, and eBay comes with everything to use it right out of the box, an OEM item should be the same for that price.
There are better and cheaper options out there than the walbro version. Mighty vac is way cheaper and better. Plus the guage is actually in a range you can use, why have an 80psi gauge when you will never go over 10?

I don't see much of a future for Walbro or Zama. If you think about it, the good working aftermarket carbs made out of China are $10+/-, while some OEM Walbros can run $100+. Gas will be banned in California soon, leaving only batteries to charge.

I use a MityVac, not quite as small but it'll work. I also use it for integrity tests on crankcases.
I bought a vacuum/pressure tester on eBay 6 years ago for $40.00. Still works great.

Have you ever tested one with a MightyVac? Normally it's used to bleed brakes on cars but it adds pressure or suction so I think it would work.
I was wondering the same thing myself. Rebuilt a Walbro carb on my weed eater and it is still hard to start and shutting down from overheating.

No. The valve is held in place by the pivot arm which in turn is held in place by a lightweight compression spring

For the few carbs I rebuild it's not worth it to me. do the rebuild correctly you really don't need it.
