Hi. I’m Carl Sagan. This is a place where I often work in Ithaca, New York near a Cornell University. Maybe you can hear, in the background, a 200 foot waterfall right nearby, which is probably - I would guess - a rarity on Mars, even in times of high technology.
It seems that many of Vangelis' works are absolute masterpieces and this one is no exception. I believe that he is one of the greatest musicians in human history. This piece, along with "Alpha" and "Heaven and Hell" are some of the most beautiful tracks of music I've ever had the privilege of listening to, they absolutely touch the part of the mind and soul where curiosity, wonder, imagination, and intelligence lie. As with many other people, I can't even listen to this piece without tearing up, especially around the 2:10 mark onward, it pulls at the strings of the heart. It takes an incredible amount of talent and brilliance to invoke such emotion with just a piece of music. Bravo, Vangelis. This track reminds me of a certain truth: I've come to learn that everything in life is bittersweet, including life itself, because some day it all comes to and end. Every friendship lost due to people going down their separate paths, every marriage broken due to death or divorce, every accomplishment and achievement eventually forgotten due to the passage of time. Most of us like to comfort ourselves by believing that there is an afterlife where all of these things are eternal - however the reality is that there is no way to know for sure what comes after death. That being said, it is important to make the absolute most out of life: experience everything you can, learn until your brain can't handle any more, love harder than ever before. Be kind and help others in an effort to make their lives better, and teach others about all the beauty life has to offer. Make someone smile every day. There is so much out there that we haven't even discovered, so much beauty waiting to be unveiled in the vast universe. Nobody will be able to experience it all. We are but grains of sand in a vast desert.
I can not define what I feel when listening to music of Vangelis. Just know that my soul is filled with joy and jubilation. People like Vangelis came to life with the purpose of showing the existence of the soul. Thanks, Vangelis. You are an angel sent by God.
Marcelo Campos Tragic that exactly this totally failed on Carl Sagan, militant soulless brain-materialist and anti-paranormalist but the man who did most after Vangelis himself to make this track known.
@@conscienceaginBlackadder i couldn't agree more ! By phrases like "the cosmos is all that was, is or will be " or " we all are star dust , thru us the cosmos became concious of itself " ( i'm paraphrasing ) he outed himself as the atheist and materialist , you had already described him . Well, that was his right of course ! But using Vangelis' doubtless transcendental music to sneaky lure millions of viewers of the series into this same mentality was quite an audacity and very manipulative imo! It gave me the impression that is was the main intention of the series to lure the viewers into materialitic atheism or at least agnosticism. This subliminally ever present intention spoiled the otherwise well-made "Cosmos"-series for me to some degree .
When I die, and if God exists, I would wish for him to let me see the universe in all its beauty as the lights fade one last time. It is a shame we will most likely never explore the endless worlds that stretch to infinity in our universe, a grand, indescribable adventure that never ends. I am jealous of the thought that perhaps future humans will have the privilege to do so.
Are you sure about that, the universe is the most unforgiving harsh violence place you could ever wish to visit! its not all nice and fluffy cuddles!! Its like everything....a brutal struggle till the end.
I think the emotions conveyed in this piece perfectly express my feelings on the Universe.I know there are millions upon millions of beautiful, wondrous things in the Universe (I even think the existence of extraterrestrial life is almost a statistical certainty) that I will never be able to see from Earth and that is quite saddening, but at the same time merely knowing that they exist is uplifting and awe-inspiring.
BurningSky93 I feel exactly the same way... The almost certainty that something is true, but that we won't (probably) be able to prove right. Knowing the question has an answer but it's hidden to us... the immensity, the almost infinite time lapse (at least from our point of view)... it's makes me feel a mixture of emotions that is so hard to express... from deep sadness to the joy of beauty. Wishing there was something else so that we could know and not just disappear.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music i have ever heard. I remember distinctly watching Cosmos episode about Mars and hearing this music for the first time. I watched Cosmos when I was a kid (7 or 8 ish), and based all of my future music taste on works such as this one. I have found many, but none have ever topped Vangelis. The Yes/Asia Prog family tree is as beautiful as this but in the form of rock and roll. Thank you Carl for selecting Vangelis for your beloved program. And thank you for the coherent and digestible science.
A youthful fascination with space. Wonderful presentation by Carl sagan. The mars episode captivated me. But the music over the images of the red planet was something I have never forgotten. Thank you sir. You will live on. Thank you for a memory

Absolutely love this song for man many years. Never has a song with no words, spoke to the spirit, soul, heart and mind of man, in such a simple but majestic composition. Sans the magnificent unimaginable photos, the enchanting music is a unique work of art. Masterful! All created for us and the billions of eons that our children will have to explore and experience. I don't know what the title implies about "do you hear the dog's barking?
2 years late but for anyone curious, the title refers to a Mexican short story written by Juan Rulfo that was adapted into a movie, for which Vangelis composed the soundtrack en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_You_Hear_the_Dogs_Barking%3F check it out it's a beautiful film, with both a heartwarming story and Vangelis heavenly music.
1:30 - This music is so clear, so pure and innocent but also very melancholic at the same time. _(Music from the Mexican drama film and by the French movie director François Reichenbach, in 1975)._
You must truly be inspired by things beyond the limitations of our blue rock to create such a magnificent work of art . This propels my imagination to a state of utter bliss. I imagine being in a ship traveling from earth to another star system as we trek beyond Sol itself . Slowly watching our home planet fade away, as this song resonates through my head. This song leaves a lasting effect to me that seems almost otherworldly.
This soundtrack reminds me both of the grandness and beauty of the universe, watching Cosmos late at night and also how lucky I am to have my best friends.

I'd heard this at the end of one of the episodes of Carl Sagan's Comos (the newer revised version) and wondered if I'd ever find it! Now I know its name. It is such a sweet melody -- heart-rendingly beautiful. It is unique although somewhat in the vein of tunes like Lara's Theme.
This is the most beautiful piece of music I know. It tears me up every single time. I can't stop thinking about a lose of a truly great friend of mine. Cosmos was made almost 20 years before I was born, but I'm glad I went back to see it. And, wow, it was good. Godspeed, Carl Sagan. I hope to look at the future the same way you do.
I first heard this years ago when I got the Soundtrack album to Cosmos by Carl Sagen. I play it almost every day, this is so simple but so beautiful and powerful.
This is one of those songs that everytime I hear it, not kidding, every single time, I can't help but to tear up. It's really a great song, it brings back personal memories of mine that are both happy and sad but when the song ends, I always come out a stronger person. It makes me feel happy about everything that has happened. How great life can be. Thanks for sharing the video!
There's a scene in Cosmos. On a distant hypothetical planet in a globular cluster, there's on with the waves breaking on a sandy shore. It's night against a starry sky. And as the planet turns, instead of the moon rising out of the water, the entire Milky Way galaxy is rising. Face on, the full spiral. It is so beautiful how they put the galaxy there with the waves. And in music was Entends-tu Les Chiens Aboyer? I was 10, and I wished so badly I could be there. 44 years later, I still do. I've never forgotten that feeling. Carl Sagan and Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, you changed lives and brought joy. Rest in Peace.
This song has the ability to rescue the best of mankind even in the hardest of times. Music can really save a life. This transcendental piece just ensures that we belong to something larger than we can conceive. You don't listen to it with your ears, but with your soul… Here i mark Carl Sagan's words: "The Cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
¡VIVE!
Playing this song while looking at stars through my binoculars is such amazing experience ☺️, I instantly feel some kind of connection with the universe.
I had to do a presentation today... I was pretty nervous, then I just thought of Carl's voice, this song and floating through amongst the stars... all my concerns suddenly seemed so insignificant
i like how you name beethoven and mozart, who are 2 of the biggest composers of all time, then you but grieg in the middle which is nowhere near as known as mozart, bach, beethoven, chopin, schubert, and so on
All of them are the same composer. They play the music of the endless time, the wonder of the Order, the Cosmos. Music is the language of the stars and when someone plays rightly the lines, all of us we can understand the truth for a second.
I always pictured it was the stars, slowly going out, one by one as the sunrises.... or could be them coming out, as the moon rises, but I think sunrise suits the ending chord better... at least that is what my mind sees when I close my eyes and listen....beautiful...thank you!
At the end of this program (which expired in 1996), he entered a vignette with a person (an actor of course) as Jesus Christ (identical to it to) with a white light in the background and it looking as if seeing something far away and an announcer read a message like Jesus there he was talking about: "Peace, love, faith, hope, light and unity. They are not just words. You sure you did everything he could for his fellow men? Think about it, because one day we will meet and I'd love to call you my son." And while the announcer read the message, he played an excerpt of this music video. The children of the time had to fear the vignette. I already thought she was beautiful.

Enchanting; I love his harmonic progressions.
¡VIVE!
This is my idea of what Heaven must sound like.
there is no heaven
of course....after all, what would heaven be without dogs?

@@xcxc7167 But if there was.
Playing this song while looking at stars through my binoculars is such amazing experience ☺️, I instantly feel some kind of connection with the universe.
A song to the COSMOS...
Goose bumps.
I had to do a presentation today... I was pretty nervous, then I just thought of Carl's voice, this song and floating through amongst the stars... all my concerns suddenly seemed so insignificant
Vangelis Ever!
Like&Agree.
When i hear this song, my soul cross the universe!!!
Sublime, spiritual music which the masses should listen to, at least to give it a hearing.
they never will as long as you call it spiritual
Not all people have this sensitivity. I feel that way too, listening to music I feel close to God, I can not explain.
Sorry Beethoven, Grieg and Mozart but I think Vangelis is the greatest composer ever in the history.
Bård Kvale Don't look down, look up.
Noooo
i like how you name beethoven and mozart, who are 2 of the biggest composers of all time, then you but grieg in the middle which is nowhere near as known as mozart, bach, beethoven, chopin, schubert, and so on
All of them are the same composer. They play the music of the endless time, the wonder of the Order, the Cosmos. Music is the language of the stars and when someone plays rightly the lines, all of us we can understand the truth for a second.
Totally disagree
"Humility."
-Carl Sagan
I always pictured it was the stars, slowly going out, one by one as the sunrises.... or could be them coming out, as the moon rises, but I think sunrise suits the ending chord better... at least that is what my mind sees when I close my eyes and listen....beautiful...thank you!
I can't contain myself. I'm crying becase of the inmense happiness this song brings to my soul.
Thanks for posting this...I first heard it decades ago

This song was the subject of a vignette of a major television station here in Brazil called SBT (Brazilian Television System). The name of the program that he had called "Door of Hope" where people sent a letter to the program, were called and were in the program attempting any dream that they wanted from the simplest to the most difficult (how to find relatives there many years did not see and such). At the end of this program (which expired in 1996), he entered a vignette with a person (an actor of course) as Jesus Christ (identical to it to) with a white light in the background and it looking as if seeing something far away and an announcer read a message like Jesus there he was talking about:
"Peace, love, faith, hope, light and unity. They are not just words. You sure you did everything he could for his fellow men? Think about it, because one day we will meet and I'd love to call you my son."
And while the announcer read the message, he played an excerpt of this music video. The children of the time had to fear the vignette. I already thought she was beautiful.

Unbelievable. So beautiful.😍🤗
(Peace, love, faith, hope, light, union. That are not just words.
Are you sure you did everything you could for another one? Think about it. Cause someday we will find each other. And I want to call you "my son")
A cosmic lullabye.....:)
