I agree with everything you said but please stop saying it’s been years since we heard from Kendrick. DAMN dropped in 2017 and the Black Panther soundtrack dropped 2018. I love that us NY'ers continue to be the standard that every other city respects, while having the shoulders that are meaningful when others stand on them in order to see further . NY's relevance makes everyone else's relevance, relevant 😉. Folks even love our Bronx lingo. Example, folks "in the know " knows that "Turn his TV off" is Bronx slang coined by Hassan Campbell, Bronx native from Sedgwick Avenue, Hip hop's ground zero. Kendrick created an entire song off of our swag, and we appreciate it because we appreciate the West for pushing it further, which is another "win" for the west and a head-nod to NY, and the Bronx in particular. All New York/The East Coast continue to do is spread love and share with the rest. We've given the west some of our (and now their) best and legendary talent. 2pac (Harlem), Kokane (Bronx), Ice T (Jerz), Kurrupt (Philly), etc. We even give away our teams (Brooklyn Dodgers, remember???) 😇. We've always loved and continue to love the west. I feel like West coast folk tend not to believe this, oddly. Regardless, keep spinning the block Cali! Kendrick has represented you guys fantastically and all of us on the East coast are all here for it, while respectfully tipping our Yankees/Mets cap. And remember, it was Nas (Queens, New York) to congratulate Kendrick on the SB. It was Jay-Z (Brooklyn, New York) to offer Kendrick the SB head-lining opportunity......because he deserved it. We've always loved and respected the west, and if there are any other NY'ers in the comment section here I would be pretty damn confident that they're showing love to Kendrick, not on no salt or indirect stuff. With that said, shout out to Fat Joe and Terror Squad. Our legends are never embarrassed, especially when I can also edit clips of players and fans singing along with Joe's lyrics. However, Ice Cube's performace just had that energy, magnified by the fact that LA was on one this year....and that's just the truth. This is the year of the West, and it's well deserved.
As a Californian growing up in the Bay Area, we can say the same thing about our lingo and slang used in various ways. For example, the words hella, player hater, trapping, fasho, Icey, bread, Fetty, etc. The list goes on and on. Furthermore, we are never confused about who laid down the foundation of rap music; those of us who have been around since the beginning of hip-hop know what is truth. But let's keep it real, most people in NY don't listen to Cali artist like they claim.
@@virgowoman1973 You’re absolutely right. In the Bronx, we’ve been saying "Player Hater" since Biggie, Puffy, and Ma$e popularized it in the mid-90s, borrowing it from The Bay. That’s 100% facts. As for "hella," it became part of New York's lingo in the early 2000s from folks moving here from San Francisco and through movies, but it never became big in our rap scene. However, my point is, we on the East Coast have often extended an olive branch, but Cali sometimes seems overly competitive, like there’s always something to prove. Kendrick, for example, carried out his battle with Drake from NYC, and Kendrick got nothing but love here anytime the was seen in public. Tell me I’m lying. 🤔 And sure, we don’t listen to a lot of Cali music...not out of disrespect, but that's only because alot of Cali styles often reflect deeply local culture that’s different from ours. For instance, we don’t bump much Hyphy, but it’s not us “acting brand new.” Similarly, most folks in Cali probably never heard of Ka who recently just passed away, Corey Gunz, or Fred da Godson because they’re deeply tied to Brooklyn or Bronx politics locally. Ka is a GOAT, but most folks outside of the tri-state never even heard of him. But we're not complaining that Cali doesnt know one of the greatest rappers EVER. Ka is simply Brooklyn and that's just what it is and what its going to be! and you know what? We LOVE that, because he's ours! So no, it's not a slight, nor has it ever been. We always bumped Cali music that resonated with with us, thats the TRUTH. Anyone who actually grew up in the 5 Boro's knows this. It's just that there's some music that we don't listen to, but it's not because we dont like or respect ya'll. That's the furthest from the truth.
