    I never knew there was a difference but I recently got a chocolate field lab and his energy level is night and day with my black lab I had growing up. I spend more time outdoors now than indoors. I don't really mind because I'm college age so it has been a great help with getting me in shape but there is no way I could have handled that when I was a kid. Definitely has taught me it's important to research your dog breed before getting the dog. I love what you said at the end though. I'm thankful for the wonderful years I spent with my black lab as much I am thankful and excited to spend many wonderful years with my chocolate.

    I wanted a lab, a big dog...we've always had and still have a small (20 lb dog). I also knew that this dog could not be wired and shouldn't need TONS of exercise, just an average amount, walks, throwing balls, large fenced in back yard. I was unaware of the difference between labs until I started my research and decided that an English lab would be a good fit. We bought our beautiful chocolate male English lab 2.5 years ago and he is WONDERFUL! Such a beautiful, sweet, and calm dog. When I first brought him to the vet at 9 weeks old, she knew he was an English right away. I asked how she knew, and the vet said, "he's so calm". Our Finn has a massive head, stocky body, thick coat, the "otter tail" and a heart bigger than all of that! This is a great video for those looking for a lab. The American's are BEAUTIFUL, sleek and tall, but my husband and I and I probably couldn't keep up with one and fulfill it's exercise needs. Shop wisely!

      Crete I am have a beautiful female that is pure bred 50/50 I am just trying to decide which she is more like! She has the excitement of the field, but gets lazy and just wants to lie in the grass during outdoor time? She will nap ANYWHERE ANYTIME ANY PLACE lol. Yet, she has the sleek, long build of the field. I am eager to see what she will be like once she reaches adulthood!

    I had a labrador retriever mixed with a English Springer spaniel she was black had a white spot on her chest and looked like she was a pure blooded lab she was the same size as my pure yellow lab except she looked like she was a mix between the English lab and American lab she was a great bird hunting dog I sadly never got to see her hunt though and it's cool that there used to be a tuxedo lab I love the lab breed so much I really miss mine.

      I realize this video was published here several years ago. So...
      The so-called "silver", "charcoal", and "blue" colors are not recognized by AKC, nor any other legitimate registration corporation because those colors have been determined to carry that dilute gene that Retriever Life mentioned three responses above. Those colors may also present with some genetic disorders/diseases that recognized colors do not.
      As to the video, I do wish Fran (I know her) had said "style" instead of "type". The breed's standard IS the type. Style means the, for lack of better word, deviation from the set "mold". So, say you buy a pair of high-top athletic shoes. Athletic shoe is the TYPE, and high-top is the style.
      I'm sad that Fran thinks there will be no time that another dual champion will happen. My show Labs were closer to the true type, AND, they were very good hunters. I never competed in field trials because A) They are very expensive, and B) I don't believe that they really show true hunting ability, instinct, and resemble in any way that I would have hunted. (400+ yard retrieves are not something that would normally happen in my hunting situations!)
      I so wish the Lab were not so popular. That popularity has only served to, in my opinion, bring the breed down in intelligence and in appearance.
      DON'T breed for color! DON'T breed just to breed. DON'T breed for money!
      DO buy from responsible, ethical breeders (who do NOT breed for the above reasons.). DO buy from those who do all of the health tests for genetic issues the breed presents. DO buy from breeders who will take that puppy/dog back for any reason.
      Be RESPONSIBLE, ETHICAL buyer and owner!

    I am 72 and currently have 3 Field (AKA American) labradors that I compete with in agility. They are awesome swimmers and easy to train. They have off switches so are wonderful companions. What she calls English we call Bench or Conformation Labs. Funny the British call their Field type Labs "Working Labs".

      Arpan Yardi American labradors were bred for hunting and being gun dogs, and the English Labradors were bred for competitions and to be show dogs.

    noting like a St Johns water dog, you also forgot about the silver labs, fox red labs and white labs

      Yes Google it, AKC dosent recognize them. I owned a 100 pound american white lab, just lost her to cancer

      yeah i saw videos of silver labs.. why doesnt the AKC recognize them? are they severely inbred?

    • @Jay-hu6ne
      @Jay-hu6ne 10 лет назад +1

      Um no......akc just isnt very smart. Same dog just different colors and which are rare. They are expensive too, I got lucky with mine and its also how you breed them......I would suggest looking up breeding and the real labs that are extinct now were black with a tuxedo coat
