Have you ever tried ? Once you hook it solid let out line do it will create a loop below the fish then it will run back to river. This does work I have done it. Also tipping the rod down sometimes helps. Just ideas not being a smart ass. Fantastic job by the way. I wish I had time to fish more.

That large steelhead is a pretty sure it is on the second or third return to the river to spawn. When they get that big the steelhead has made at least one return to the river from the Ocean to river to spawn and is on the second return to spawn. Most all of the steelhead that will be caught from the main Nehalem from January to late March below the Salmon berry river are that large and have made multiple runs to the river and back to the Ocean. Taking a raft and launch at the bridge on the main Nehalem R above the turn off to Fish Hawk creek and lake also have Hugh Steelhead and fish the fish hawk creek mouth at the Nehalem R always produce Hugh steelhead in mid-winter
