The one weakness in this great story: Why would you use your real name? For God sake Sharpe, you are a war hero.
Well, it’s not modern day of internet and fame, he might be a war hero, but Wellington and others take all the fame. Only people who would know about Sharp would be people in same regiments and his superiors.
would it have survived the travel to india? i doubt the sent formal documents ahead so his name could only get there via word of mouth.
Well because they're somewhat copying the books where Sharpe did use his real name, however the difference is this 'Movie' was done after the series where waterloo already happened so Sharpe was a hero yet the books the india campaign was before the war with the french so Sharpe wasn't a war hero at this point, the problem is this movie takes pieces from the 3 books of the india campaign, the first book Sharpe was a spy but harper wasnt with him, equally Dodd didn't make an appearance till the second book.
Sharpe as well in this story was still a redcoat
Private at first, then sergeant in the second book saving the furture duke of Wellingtons life, then ensign in the final book after that he was transferred to the Rifles
So its all kinds of screwy
@@TheKiingkiller well they would have heard of him , he is quite an upstart. However as someone points out these plots were pulled from his early exploits in the 33rd Foot(Books).

It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but Sharpe’s lower lip just starting to tremble with grief as he takes aim is a great detail.
Also love it that they make a point of addressing each other by name in what is presumably their final exchange of words.

It's interesting when you've read the book and know what scene is being adapted. This is a mostly original story but elements have been taken from Sharpe's Tiger and this scene is based on one where Sharpe is asked to shoot the Scottish officer he had specifically been sent to rescue to prove he's really a deserter. He hadn't even met Harper yet at this point in his life.
Thank you. I was getting confused, wondering if there was another India adventure I hadn't read yet. Dodd being there threw me for a spin.
@@pippleyfisching9214 Cornwall released the Sharpe and Harper books first, then did Tiger, Fortress, Triumph, Trafalgar and Prey as prequels before Sharpe and Harper met in Sharpe's Rifles
In Sharpe's Tiger he knew that the powder he was given was bad and didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. Although later he told that officer he would've shot even if it was good powder.

I get the reference, but it doesn't make sense. Pakistan won't exist for another 150 years, and some of their descendants might become Pakistani when the partition does occur.

@@maaz322 Replace Pakistani with Afghan then? They existed then and often raided across the Indus. Or perhaps Muslim? The Muslim Mughal and previous Dehli Sultanate invaded and subjugated their rule upon a largely Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh India.
Someone sprang for some nice weapons, the gun Sharpe was holding was a French An IX de Cavallerie carbine. It has the cavalry bar on the left side as you can see Sharpe holding it. It was the French's version of the Baker rifle, although without the rifling that the Baker had. It was the gun of the French Hussars, Lancers, and Cavalry compared to the later version of the Charleville that would have been used. They're very light and in .69 caliber, quite lethal at 50 yards where their accuracy isn't bad.
Lmao you said the funny number
Casualplayer my guy probably spent so long studying these weapons and this is the response he gets lmao
Damn your eyes sir, I muse .69 caliber is of your own vestige, as the weapon in question was .70 caliber as I stand. Aye, over-bore yes they were usually .60 caliber but tolerances for hundredths? Nay man...it wasn't that exacting in those days of ripping yarns and boys own adventure. I'm sure you're a top fellow sir, not one to aspire to a cad or a bounder.

The charcoal in gunpowder is well incorporated with the saltpeter and sulfur and doesn't separate easily.
If someone used lamp-black to spoil the gunpowder, it might stain and burn like that.
Big bang, musket ball drops to the ground.
I almost had a heart attack when I read the title 😂
That is a good test though
Eh, I'm not so sure about it. It feels like one of those things that would anger the two trainer recruits in question and make them wonder when you'll order them to shoot each other or otherwise betray them. I know, he gave bad powder so it wouldn't actually be a shot (and if the test was to see if they'd recognize bad powder, there's definitely better ways to do it), but it still seems off. Especially since spies are probably going to be more willing to shoot each other to get the job done.
Better test would have been an actual English spy (local or otherwise), someone they wouldn't know unless they were a spy themselves, and have the shot be real. In that case, they won't feel like they specifically are being betrayed - at most, it's just an affirmation that they're genuine about deserting the English rather than seeming like they could be ordered to kill each other on a whim in the future. They're already deserters who were willing to change sides, and if you need them as trainers then you want them happy and to believe that you'll take care of them as part of your army.
Its also unfaithful to the books which came before harper and sharpe didnt know each other and sharpe wasnt in the rifles dodd wasnt the one to make sharpe fire the musket it was the lord of the area cant remember the name
Team kill is disabled, sharpe knew that.

This is from Sharpe's Challenge. There are two more after Sharpe's Waterloo.

What with Sharpes three shots a minute speeches I'd bet the modern era would make his head spin. Firing off potentially hundreds of rounds a minute.
He'd still have them practice reload drills. "12 seconds. Terrible. Doesn't matter how quickly you can shoot. If you're caught without a bullet in your rifle you are dead thus endangering the lives of those you serve beside. Try it again!"
3 mags a minute ?
@@W3X0R97 if that includes actually shooting the rifle then quite possibly

Just realized....Dodds soldiers raised their rifles to aim at Sharpe...but also at the recruits behind him too.
Thought they were short on soldiers...but ok then
Honestly, Ive been watching short vids of Sharpe for a week on RUclips and the casting of this serie is astonishing. So many well known figures (before they were well known I would guess)...
It's a great show and yup so many British tv shows have well known stars before they got hugely famous.
In the books Sharpe has black hair, but Bernard Cornwell was so impressed with Sean Bean's performance in Sharpe's Rifles, that in later books he stopped referring to Sharpe's hair color.
I guess he was a ..... sharpeshooter
Dodd must be worth a few guineas by now!
Its abit confusing because this is like Sharps Tiger but it plays much later in the show :D
This must have been made before the prequel books. Sharpe didn't meet Harper till years after Sharpe's fights in India.
Yep, got me for some time
Shit, that was a power move!
in the book sharpe knew the gun powder was bad but admits he would have shot even if it wasn't

Sharpe knew the powder was bad just before he shot. He would never have killed Harper.
In the book he admits he knew the powder was bad but would have fired anyway, it’s not harper he was aiming at in that scene but I’m like 99% sure we’re meant to think he would have fired even if it was good powder here. I mean he didn’t have a choice, one dies the other completes the mission or they both die and achieve nothing.
i know it'd be unrealistic but how crazy would it be if Sharpe shot the rope holding the dummy in the backround
Would have been very impressive... for all of 3 seconds before the both of them were executed. If Dodd gave him good enough powder to carry the round far enough to hit the rope he’d have expected Harper dead and stuck to his threat.
How can he not distinguish and English accent to an Irish one? Haha
I'm slightly confused. Isn't India supposed to be under british rule? It seems like they may be in with the french here, although I don't know what general Dod is.
