He wanted to recognize Sharpe for a valorous act, but knew he would catch Hell from other officers because he wasn't a "gentleman." I get the feeling he prays that he won't get promoted AGAIN...
7:01 I love the way Sharpe shoves the officer that tried to trip him up. Bloody toff definitely didn't expect that, just fell back like the wimp he is!
Even better, get the audiobooks. And start, not in order of release, but order of sharpes career. The books written later, but cover his time as a regular soldier getting promoted each time, are particularly brilliant and cover his time in India better than the shows.
I was a little girl when my Aunt introduced me to the Sharpe series and started my life long affair with Sean Bean and the Sharpe series. I went from watching the series, to reading the books. You know what? I love both versions the same. They're both unique creations and deserve their own respect.
@@AhsokaTanoTheWhite ah yes. Because women did not existed back in the dark ages. It always amuses me that the Sharpe novels became regarded as classics within the space of about 10 years from publication of Sharpe's Rifles. That it happened so quickly is nothing short of amazing. Just goes to show what captivating reading they are.
At the end of high school I went to the library for some reason and came home with several of the Sharpe series books. That was the first time I had read for pleasure and was the start of a life long love of reading. That was 32 year ago.
The "hats" you see are "foraging covers" to protect their caps that are under the covers. These were worn while the men foraged for food, hunting and so forth.
How sharpe even stays conscious through that entire pool conversation when his back is covered in blood, I do not know. It looks like he's going to faint almost from the start.
Stupid bit of trivia. Most of the cavalry of the Napoleonic Era believed that the point of the sword was the only way to deliver a killing blow, and sharpened only the first 5 or 6 inches of the blade. As late as 1913 Lt. George Patton (yes, that Patton) designed the US Model 1913 cavalry saber and it emphasized the thrust nearly to the exclusion of the slash.
@@OutspokenSeeker he was made an Ensign in India, but when he became a rifleman he was promoted to Leftenant as there are no Ensigns in the Rifles. The film simply omits that detail and promotes him straight to Lt.
Why on earth did they exchange David Troughton? His acting was an absolute joy to behold, and positively outshines the replacement as well as the protagonist. Well done, Sir!
@IndigoNeutrino The music can be found on an album called "Over the Hills and Far Away: The Music of Sharpe" and I think it is on Amazon, at least that's where I bought my copy. Hope that helps.

it's been awhile since I read the series - but as I recall Dick and Wellesley had met at Seringpatam and Sharpe received his battlefield commission after saving his life at Assaye correct? I assume the scene with the French dragoons at the beginning is meant to approximate that event.
Its David Troughton as Wellington. Son of Patrick Troughton (2nd, and best, Dr Who)The guy who played him in the rest of the series is Hugh Fraser, very good in the role but I think Troughton is better. While Fraser looks a little more like Wellington,Troughton appears to move sound and act much more like the Peer himself.
i dont often watch sharpe, but when i do i squirt out of every orifice and lay spent at the fucking epicness that is sean bean in his best role ever. also this is the best program/film series ever and is non-arguable end of story.
Lmao Crazy to find you here! Clips from the show were recommended randomly on my feed and I decided to look for episodes. Now I see the one guy who would enjoy a show about battle field tactics. I know for sure this will be worth watching.
Interesting how Sharpe is standing in the middle of that puddle when he throws the Frenchman off his horse... and suddenly they are both on dry soil so the poweder stays dry for Sharpe to being able to shoot the 3rd Rider... hmpf ; )
At 9:28 Hogan refers to the riflemen as " sharp shooters" . I could be wrong but I believe that term was not used untill the American civil war when it was used in regard to union soldiers using sharps rifles
Loved the books, love the videos, hate the 1 v. 3 fight that results in his commission. The sword blow to the back would be disabling if not mortal, and how did the pistol's gunpowder stay dry?
When he said, "still sharp" in Lord of the Rings, I cheered.
Sharpe had 9 lives, Boromir however... :(

That dog is a good actor, you would swear that was his real owner.
Hogan was a brilliant character. A perfect fit as Sharpe’s mentor.
The entire British army just stood there watching Wellington get chased, almost as if they expected Sean bean to saves the day.
The director only had money for 2 leads, a horse and a dog. The bit players cost next to nothing, ergo... ;-)
Standing by while the Duke of Wellington gets ambushed till one man saves him....now that's soldering
Brian Cox is such a great actor. Love seeing him in these olde Sharpe episodes.
He was sorely missed throughout the rest!

All 16 movies are worth watching.
Sharpe's Rifles
Sharpe's Eagle
Sharpe's Company
Sharpe's Enemy
Sharpe's Honour
Sharpe's Gold
Sharpe's Battle
Sharpe's Sword
Sharpe's Regiment
Sharpe's Siege
Sharpe's Mission
Sharpe's Revenge
Sharpe's Justice
Sharpe's Waterloo
Sharpe's Challenge
Sharpe's Peril
Watch them in order!
watched all the movies and led line battles on multiple games? now that's soldiering
I disagree: Gold is a complete mess and Justice is borderline boring

watched the movies...theres a game?
Wot about 'Sharpe's crumpet.'?
Ah, the memories. When I first watched this, I asked my dad why those french guys had popcorn bags on their hats.

First started reading Sharpe's Fortress the other day. Damn good book.
of course, ol' sharpie was already an officer by this time. so i prefer to think of the films as alternate history of sharpe.
Especially so when Sharpe in the books already served under Wellesley in the 33rd in India for a fair while.
