Riding the whirlpools of the world's strongest tidal current at Saltstraumen, Norway

- The whirlpools of Saltstraumen are the world's most powerful maelstrom. They are situated 10 kilometres south-east of the city of Bodø in Norway. Their impressive strength is caused by the world's strongest tide passing through a narrow channel which connects with the huge Skjerstadfjord and causes a colossal tide which in turn produces the maelstrom. Our visit to the malestrom was on a RIB, and was lead by a Norwegian ex-special forces hard man. This exciting excursion was one of several real eye-openers we enjoyed whilst on a Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen trip with the Hurtigruten ship, MS Richard With.
Two things - first, I was on one of those RIB trips to Saltstraumen a few weeks ago, mid May 2024, and scary it was, but nothing like that! If it looks scary in the video, it’s a lot scarier close up and personal. Second thing, a RIB actually capsized in Saltstraumen earlier in the year, February I think. All in the boat were thrown into the water but amazingly, no one drowned. They were all saved by other boat trip operators who happened to be in the area at the same time. Our RIB pilot told us that…just before he took us out!
