Japanese gardens borrowed things from Chinese gardens,mainly from the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty or more than 1000 years ago. This garden is a Ming dynasty style, or about 600 years ago.
zigzag walkway is because of superstition: ghosts can only walk straight and long, straight corridors accelerate qi and rushes it. Actual reason is so that you get a meandering pathway, makes the garden feel bigger. Waterfall is used to drown out traffic noise. Plants closer to the pathways tend to have wider leaves than the ones further away as optical illusion to make the garden feel bigger.
In China is believed that evil spirits can only walk straight lines. So the zigzag paths are not like this in order "to imitate nature". Even ancient roads in China are build with curves and Chinese gardens never have straight paths.
DarkAryen you could check summer palace and forbidden city in beijing. And you could check the map of ancient chinese cities. For example chang'an and luoyang kaifeng..you will found all streets in those cities are straight.

The connection between buildings are of course straight, like every other palace and temple everywhere. Now, the "garden" around the Palace proves my point and follows the same NON-straight paths (specially bridges). According to a TV series I watched, Portland is chock full of murderous fairy tail creatures with German names. Anyway, this is a very beautiful garden.
Such a peaceful place yet there is something strange. I don't know why but these events don't fit the place... maybe it's not the fault of organisers but people who can't relax peacefully there but need entertainment. I don't know.
Chinese and Japanese gardens both are based on water, tree, stone and fishes but they have different look as and distinguished elements. Chinese gardens were reserved to imperial palace but Japanese are individual who copied from nature world into the garden and are not bounded as Zen. Koi has been developed by Japanese. Japanese gardens are more open concept but Chinese walks are zipped zapped as snakes or dragons to expel the bad spirits.

Very little. That just because China had evolved from one style to another in different periods of time doesn't mean the former styles that are preserved in neighbouring countries are not Chinese in origin, for example, the ancient Chinese musical instrument Sanxian didn't survive to the later generations in China but it was spread to Ryukyu Kingdom (now Okinawa) and then spread into Japan and became the Shamisen, an instrument that plays typical Japanese music, people today associate Shamisen with Japanese culture but do they actually know its origin of Sanxian in China? Probably not. You can check the Wikipedia of any Japanese cultural elements and see how the vast majoirity of them can be traced back to China.

When I visited, the guide said that this was originally a parking lot. It is astounding what was done here. It is well worth your time to visit.

That's not true..in north china there's many straight paths in gardens and palaces. and those roads in ancient north cities are straight.

DarkAryen curved paths in those gardens are southern chinese people's interests. It was influenced by landform.

Koi originated in China, as was bonsai and many other aspects of ancient Chinese culture.
Japanese garden is actually identical to a variant of Chinese gardens 1000 years ago, it's just a branch of Chinese garden styles.
