How to Purify by Recrystallization

  • We show how to purify aluminum nitrate and strontium nitrate by recrystallization. This is important because those two substances must be extremely pure for our upcoming video on making glow in the dark powder.
First make aluminum nitrate from our previous video: • How to Make Aluminum N...
Dissolve the dry aluminum nitrate in water and filter off any insoluble materials. We could not filter it off before it dried in the previous video because the particles at that stage are much too small. It needs crystallize once to aggregate into particles large that can be filtered.
After filtering, dry off the aluminum nitrate. The desiccator bag might be useful here: • How to make a Desiccat...
After drying, carefully weigh out the crystals. Then take that mass and add in 20% mass of water. So if you have 50g like me, you add 10g of water (or 10mL since density is 1g/mL).
It won't all dissolve, so carefully heat the mixture until it dissolves. Then cover it and let it cool down. Eventually it'll crystallize out purer crystals.
After the mixture cools to room temperature, and left for a few hours. The liquid is poured off and discarded, it has the impurities and is not needed.
The crystals are again weighed and once again they are recrystallized with 20% water.
Once this is done. Dry the final product. I started with 50g and ended up with 17g. But now it's very pure. Better than 99%
Strontium nitrate also needs to be purified. But it's solubility doesn't change that much with temperature so we'll have to purify by slow evaporation recrystallization rather than thermal cycle recrystallization.
First, make strontium nitrate like our previous video: • Make Strontium Nitrate
Once again, dissolve it in water and filter it. Then let it crystallize. But before it dries completely, let the liquid reduce to about 20% of it's saturated volume. So I started with a saturated solution of 10mL of strontium nitrate, i then waited until it evaporated down to 2mL of fluid. The crystals are not included in this assessment. Then discard the liquid. Repeat the recrystallization process.
Once again, use the desiccator bag to obtain extremely dry chemicals.
We are now ready to produce glow-in-the-dark powder.

Hey boss, do you know how to recrystallize menthol crystals? I have a video I'm making that about meth, and the crystals I got in the mail today were liquefied. I froze them, it was a cloudy gummy mess. I melted them back and let them sit in a bowl to get to room temp naturally, but it all looks terrible (no crystals, just... I don't know, gross). Really need some help. Please respond as soon as you can. Thank you so much.

@@jonross377 You are probably correct, lol. Looking back, my whole question looks suspicious. Alright, so meth, specifically the version known as "ice" looks very similar to menthol crystals. My channel on RUclips is dedicated to helping parents and children know everything about drugs. No scare tactics, just truth. In the first video I'm making, I need a substitute for meth because I don't want to actually go purchase meth. It's incredibly easy to get, but I don't want to put myself at risk anymore. Even just possession of the drug is a major felony. The script for that first video, for the actual show, is so powerful; the imagery needs to perfectly align with it. Thus, I need something that looks like meth and the menthol crystals that Amazon dropped me off yesterday, melted :(

What we have are solubility tables, which tell us the solubility of our compound at different temperatures in different solvents. We look for a solvent where the compound has low solubility at room temperature (or colder) and high solubility at hotter temperatures. This is ideal, as the crystals will come out when the solvent cools from being heated, purifying them. This is the general idea of recrystallization.

And you do get rid of most of the liquid, and thus of the impurities, when you decant off the liquid.

This is only cost or time effective when you do continuous or repeated operations of the same kind.

Kovu Legar I think it should work for most things in most solvents, as it has to do with crystal formation and solubility. You'll need to look at the individual things though.
For example, heat doesn't help with NaCl as solubility doesn't change over heat, so you need to rely on solvent evaporation rather than temperature changes to cause it to crystalize.

    • @ThomasAndersonbsf
      @ThomasAndersonbsf 8 лет назад +2

+Kovu Legar fractional recrystalzation is the term you are looking for here, the reason it works is cause as the soluble holding of the liquid changes and the salts all have preferred solubility so one salt will completely precipitate out before the others do, you just have to keep changing the quantity storage of the solvent and when you see precipitate, filter off, not sure why he did not mention this, but the purification process is used for the stuff still dissolved in liquid that sticks to the crystals since you cant wash it off or it will dissolve with water, you would have to switch to something that is mincible with the solvent, but the salts you want are not soluble in, so repeating the process with the recrystalized material in fresh distilled solvent increases purity again, (since each time less liquid per crystal surface is available, and the content in the liquid drops too. :)

+ROCKET&SCIENCE EXPERIMENT he said he cant because the extra energy of the heat causes an effect that effects the solubility stablizing teh amount that will dissolve in differing temps, and my guess is that there is a temp where it will change but that will either be over boiling temp requiring a pressurized vessel or will cause the salt to thermally decompose, or take on atoms from the water. destroying your salt too.

there is still liquid coating the crystals, even after the second purifying step. i think that one will not get rid of impurities unless one gets rid of the liquid phase. could you get rid of that by washing the crystals in a filter with some ethanol or isopropanol?

Im curious could this method be use to extract Thc from plant matter and then crystallize it.

Most potheads just spray lighter fluid through plant matter, then smoke the crap that gets dissolved and shoved through.
They call it "butane honey oil" if I recall.
