How to precisely install ANY brand of adjustable pushrod for Twin Cam EVO Sportster Big Twin!

  • Some manufacturers instruct to set the install pushrod length by “flats” and others “turns”. In this lesson, I explain both methods of installation. I also demonstrate what it is we are doing in theory along with a bonus tip on what I feel is the ultimate way to verify what each revolution of a turn equals on ANY brand pushrod. This tip was taught to me by the machinist/engine builder Clay Jensen of Sioux City Powersports.
    This is very useful tip when dealing with a used engine and you don’t know the brand of pushrod. It also allows a method to remove that old human error of “assuming”. As you will learn with a little research, even the same brand of pushrod manufacturers used different thread pitches! In the end, flats or turns must equal the required thousands of an inch in length. Watch this video for your free lesson!

    I'm so thankful for this video because I have these in my TC95 with SE203 cams and its time to do my cam tensioners. and I thought that they were like the S&S model with 4 turns. I'll be checking mine with a dial caliper to be sure. Thanks again.

    Always great knowledge to gain in your videos. I see new stuff all the time.
    I just did all four of mine. Using a 1/2" socket and breaker bar to turn the engine. Looking down each lifter block I put each at their lowest point on the cam. Adjusted till I had no lash. Just touching the lifter and rocker no up or down play.
    I am using Jims 1807 lifters and titanium pushrods (24 wrench flats per inch). Book calls for 15 flats (2.5 turns). Let bleed down. Then checked for spin with little to no resistance and NO UP OR DOWN PLAY.
    Waiting on the last one to bleed down. As I write this.
    Once everything is buttoned up. With the spark plugs out. I am going to rotate the engine with the starter till my oil pressure light goes out. Pop in the plugs and I will know if its all good. Will make a check at 200 miles and then probably every oil change after for 3 changes.
    Engine was running like crap. Lots of after fire on start up. The rods were not adjusted right. 3 cams were on their flats while 1 was lifted. Got a short rod out of the deal. Always finding new problems to learn from.

      Set lash when the cam is 180 degrees from peak lift! Which is 360 degrees of engine rotation from peak lobe lift. Some call it the “heel” of the cam....

    I set em all at 3 turns and have zero issues. You can load the lifter a little more than .110" especially with aftermarket cams installed.

  • @gphilpot1
    @gphilpot1 7 лет назад +1

    You simplified this, thank you. I ran into a problem with my bike that no one addresses and thought you might know. I replaced my lifters using the HD Screamin Eagle pushrods and Johson Hylift lifters. I adjusted the pushrods to where there was no-slack (starting point/0), then turned my HD SE pushrods to 4.3 turns to get close to .030 (they have 24 tpi). But the pushrods still seem to be loose as they can always be rotated by hand.
    I notice the original factory lifters from HD seemed to be a manual hydraulic lifter and the new ones have a spring in them allowing the tappets to have more play than the originals. I am assuming the new lifters will not allow spring play when the oil pressure from a running bike thus the lifters will be under pressure and have less slack.
    Question, are the original HD lifter solid(no spring, took it apart and didn't find a spring). Will the new lifters have travel because they have lifter springs and not under pressure? Thanx Greg

      Thank you. I did find out the problem. The first tech at Johnson told me the wrong max travel of the lifter. I learned it was .212 and needed to be adjusted to about .105. I had to readjust to cut down on chatter. Probably sitting at .120 now. I also found that the pushrods have slack in them until you tighten the jamb nut on the pushrod itself. No one mentioned this and I thought I wasn't adjusted out far enough on the pushrod. All has been corrected and bike is running. I will still join the site and thank you for the invite. Greg

    Just curious why you wouldn't be worried about the valve hitting the piston while adjusting the push rod but in your video on reinstalling the rocker boxes you didn't want to torque the rocker assembly down until the lifters were bled. Is there a chance of valve and piston interference in both of these situations or is it more for torque accuracy when reinstalling the rocker assembly?

    Not a bad video except for when you finally tightened down the locknut at the end, you lost about an 1/8 of a turn in your adjustment. You either need to A. Compensate for that and add about an 1/8 turn or B. Use a third wrench on the flat area of the threads to hold it in place while you tighten the locknut down
